Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If a Samsung TV flickers, goes black, or loses signal on only one HDMI input, test the same powered device and cable on another TV port. If it works there, Samsung says the original port appears to be the problem and recommends scheduling repair. The swap is a useful way to isolate the fault, but it does not identify the failed component or predict repair cost.
Check the source and connection first
- Confirm the source is on. Make sure the connected device is powered up and the TV is set to the HDMI input it uses. A wrong input or inactive source can look like a port failure. Samsung UK lists both checks in its HDMI device-detection guidance.
- Reseat the cable. Disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Reconnect it firmly to the external device first, then to the TV, and select the matching input. Samsung includes this connection check in its HDMI-port troubleshooting steps.
- Try the same setup on another TV port. Keep the source device and cable unchanged, move the cable to a different HDMI input, and select that input on the TV. This is the key test for whether the symptom follows one port.
- Compare with another cable, then another source device. Change one item at a time so you can tell whether the symptom follows the cable or the original device. Samsung recommends these swaps as part of troubleshooting HDMI connection problems.
What the port and cable swaps tell you
| Test result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The same source and cable work on another TV HDMI port. | The original TV port is the leading suspect. Samsung says the device and cable work, but there may be an issue with the original port. | Schedule TV repair through Samsung or an authorized provider. The test does not determine which internal part failed. |
| A different HDMI cable stops the flicker or signal loss. | The original cable is implicated. | Replace it with a reputable cable that supports the resolution, refresh rate, and HDMI features used by both the TV and source. Samsung advises trying another cable and replacing one if its cable test reports a problem. |
| A different source device works on the same port. | The original device or its HDMI output is implicated. | Investigate that device’s output and connection rather than assuming the TV port is defective. |
| The problem continues with other ports, cables, or devices. | The cause is not isolated to one port by these swaps. | Check the TV’s available HDMI diagnostics and software, then seek service if the fault continues. |
Run Samsung’s HDMI test if your model offers it
Test names and menu paths vary by TV model, year, region, and software. Samsung’s current US guidance says some 2022-and-later TVs offer HDMI Troubleshooting at All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis. Some older models instead show HDMI Cable Test at Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Signal Information. If neither path appears, consult the support information for your exact model rather than assuming the feature is available.

Samsung says its cable test is designed for cables shorter than 2 m and may not give good results with longer cables. If the test reports a cable problem, replace the cable; a failed result does not by itself diagnose a damaged TV port. See Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance for the test and model-dependent details.

If the picture also flickers on other inputs or built-in TV content, the one-port swap has not established a port-specific fault. Samsung’s broader picture guidance recommends checking for TV software updates and, as a temporary diagnostic, testing the TV on its own electrical circuit to check for possible grounding issues. These are general picture-flicker checks, not proof that a grounding problem caused an HDMI-only symptom. If flicker remains, Samsung advises requesting service.

A narrow setting issue on some 2018 QLED TVs
Samsung documented a specific case in which 2018 QLED TVs running software version 1270.6 could flicker with LED Clear Motion enabled. Its guidance was to turn that setting off until an update was available. This applies to that documented model-and-software case; it is not a general fix for other Samsung TVs or for a fault that remains isolated to one HDMI port.

If the same powered source and cable work on another TV HDMI input, Samsung’s recommendation is to schedule repair for the original port. Contact Samsung or an authorized repair provider, and have the exact TV model and warranty status ready. A port symptom alone cannot establish which board or component needs replacement, so do not choose a replacement part based only on the symptom.
