Samsung TTS is the text-to-speech engine that lets compatible Galaxy apps and accessibility features speak text aloud; it is not itself a screen reader. To change its voice, open Settings > General management > Text-to-speech on Samsung’s US workflow, choose an engine, then select an available language and adjust speech rate or pitch. Menu names and available voices can vary by device, software version, and region.
What Samsung TTS does—and what it does not do
Text-to-speech (TTS) converts text into spoken audio. Galaxy apps can use the device’s built-in TTS functions to speak text instead of, or alongside, displaying it; Samsung gives in-game chat and navigation as examples. The app or feature determines when speech is available.

Samsung’s US support article puts the distinction plainly: “Text to speech is not the Accessibility screen reader.” TalkBack is a screen-reading accessibility service that uses the built-in TTS system, but its purpose is broader than speaking a string of text: it helps users with visual impairments navigate and understand on-screen content. Samsung’s developer guidance describes screen reading as announcing screen content, including text and images; images without text need alternative text to provide audible feedback.
How to use text-to-speech on a Galaxy phone or tablet
For Samsung’s US instructions, configure the engine in Settings. The exact labels may differ on another Galaxy device or software version; if you do not see the route below, search Settings for Text-to-speech.

- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Text-to-speech.
- Under Preferred engine, choose an engine offered on your device.
- Choose an available language and adjust Speech rate or Pitch as desired.
- Tap Play to hear a sample using the selected settings. Tap Reset to restore the default speech rate and pitch.
Changing these settings selects and tunes the speech engine; it does not make every app read arbitrary text aloud. The app needs to support a read-aloud interaction, such as selecting text through an accessibility feature where available.
How to change the voice or download voice data
Voice choices depend on the selected engine and the language data installed on the device. Samsung says its engine and Google’s can offer different voices and languages, and only installed languages appear in the language selector.

- Open Settings > General management > Text-to-speech.
- Tap the settings icon beside Preferred engine.
- Choose Install voice data.
- Download the language or voice data you want, then return to the text-to-speech settings and select an available language.
Google’s Android accessibility help also documents installing voice data for another language. Which voices are listed depends on what your chosen engine provides for your device.

Samsung TTS or Google’s engine: how to choose
On devices that offer both, compare the actual voices and languages shown in each engine’s settings. Use the sample playback to judge which voice and pitch you prefer. Google notes that default engine choices vary by device, and Samsung says the engines may offer different voices and languages. The cited support material does not establish an objective winner for voice quality, naturalness, speed, or latency.

Android may also offer other engines installed from Google Play, but the options are not identical across every Galaxy model or region. Choose from the engines actually listed on your device rather than expecting a particular choice to be present.

Samsung’s US support instructions use Settings > General management > Text-to-speech. Samsung India documents a different route involving Apps and Bixby Vision, and gives a TalkBack example for selecting text in an app and hearing it aloud. That is a regional and device-specific workflow, not a universal sequence of taps. The India support page was last updated February 5, 2026.

If those menu names do not match your device, search Settings for Text-to-speech. A Galaxy Store listing also uses the name “Samsung TTS (Text-to-speech),” but its presence does not mean every user must install a separate app to configure the system feature; availability can vary by region and device.

What to check if text-to-speech is not speaking
- Check the preferred engine. Confirm that the engine you intend to use is selected in Text-to-speech settings.
- Check the language and voice data. Select an installed language, or use the engine’s settings to install the needed voice data.
- Check the app’s read-aloud support. TTS is the speech capability, not a universal command that forces every app to read any text on screen. If you need screen-wide spoken navigation and announcements, TalkBack is the relevant accessibility service.
- Play a settings sample. If the sample speaks, the selected engine can produce speech with those settings; check whether the app supports the interaction you are trying to use.
