These are potential drawbacks, not universal ones: the impact depends on which Samsung apps, features, and integrations you actually use. Many everyday data types can transfer, but a migration does not necessarily reproduce your old phone’s setup.
1. Samsung-specific apps and workflows may not carry over
Google says most Android data types can transfer to Pixel, but warns that “Some data stored in apps that are specific to devices from other manufacturers may not transfer.” Google Pixel Help’s transfer guide does not establish a Pixel equivalent for every Samsung-specific feature. If you rely on Samsung apps or workflows, check whether the app and the information it stores are available on Pixel before switching; some compatible apps may need to be set up again.

This matters most when a Samsung feature is part of a routine you use regularly. A change of phone may require finding another way to do that task, rather than simply restoring the same setup on Pixel.
2. Your home-screen setup and recordings may need manual attention
Moving personal data is not the same as moving the way your phone is arranged. Google’s Android-to-Pixel transfer table marks home-screen layout and recordings as not transferable from another Android phone. You may need to recreate your One UI home screen, including its layout and widget arrangement, and make a separate plan for recordings you want to keep.

The same table lists many everyday items as transferable, including contacts, photos and videos, call history, files, text messages and attachments, and WhatsApp chat history. It also lists Google Account data, calendar events, downloads, and apps downloaded through Google Play. App support and additional conditions can affect some items, including notes, passwords, and alarms, so verify anything important rather than assuming it will appear automatically.
3. You lose Samsung DeX if you depend on it
Samsung describes DeX as a desktop-style experience that lets supported Galaxy phones or tablets connect to a monitor or TV for larger-screen use and multitasking. If you use DeX to work with desktop-style apps or to turn your phone into a workstation, leaving Galaxy means giving up that Samsung feature.

DeX support varies by device. Samsung lists compatibility by model and notes changes to DeX for PC support on newer One UI releases, so confirm your current device’s capabilities before treating DeX as part of your switching calculation.

Google says Pixel can connect to Galaxy watches and other compatible accessories. That means a switch does not automatically make every Samsung accessory unusable. However, basic pairing does not establish that every Samsung companion feature, seamless handoff, or cross-device integration will behave the same way on Pixel.
Check the exact accessory model and the specific function you rely on. Also account for changing sharing compatibility: Google’s Android announcement says AirDrop interoperability is expanding to partner Android devices, including Samsung. Availability is rolling out across supported models, so older assumptions about which devices can share directly may not remain universal.
What to check before you switch
- List the Samsung features you use. Include manufacturer-specific apps, routines, DeX, and accessory integrations. Check whether each one is available or has a workable alternative on the Pixel model you plan to use.
- Check the data that matters most. Review Google’s Pixel transfer guide for the categories you need, especially app-specific content, recordings, notes, passwords, and alarms.
- Choose a transfer method. Google supports cable or Wi-Fi transfer in supported setups. A wired transfer may be useful, but a USB-C cable must support data transfer; not all USB-C cables do. A cable is optional if your setup supports wireless transfer.
- Keep the old phone and local backups for now. Google warns that if power or connectivity is lost and the phone cannot reconnect, a transfer may be partial. After setup, check the Pixel for messages, photos, recordings, notes, and app-specific content you need before erasing or trading in the Galaxy.
Who is most likely to notice the downsides?
- Likely to notice more: people who depend on DeX, Samsung-specific apps or routines, a carefully arranged One UI home screen, or particular Galaxy accessory functions.
- Likely to notice less: people whose main needs are everyday personal data and apps that are available on Pixel, and who do not rely on Samsung-only workflows.
This is a cross-brand trade-off, not a model-by-model verdict. Galaxy capabilities, Pixel transfer behavior, carriers, regions, and software releases vary, so verify the features and data you depend on for your specific devices.
