A force restart reboots the tablet without wiping stored data. A factory reset deletes personal information and may require the Google or Samsung account credentials previously associated with the device.
Choose the reset that matches your problem

Samsung uses both “factory reset” and “factory data reset.” The wording and menu layout can vary by Galaxy Tab model and software version.

Restart a frozen Galaxy Tab without erasing it
Samsung UK’s guidance is to hold Power and Volume Down together for more than seven seconds, until the tablet reboots. This is a restart, not a factory reset.

- Keep holding them for more than seven seconds, until the tablet restarts.
If it does not restart, Samsung suggests holding Power for up to two minutes to shut the tablet down. Leave it off for one minute, then press Power to turn it on. If that still fails, let the battery run out, charge the tablet for 30 minutes, and try again. Persistent unresponsiveness may require Samsung support or service.

Before erasing a tablet to troubleshoot a problem, try less destructive steps: check for a problematic app, free up storage, install available software updates, or test in Safe Mode.
Factory-reset a tablet you can open in Settings
Back up anything you need first. Samsung warns that personal information removed by a factory reset may not be recoverable. If the tablet has an encrypted microSD card, Samsung US says to decrypt it before resetting; otherwise the tablet may not be able to read the card afterward.

- Open Settings and search for Factory data reset. On some models, use General management → Reset → Factory data reset.
- Review the information on screen, then tap Reset.
- Follow the prompts. The tablet may ask for its screen-lock credential or Samsung account password.
- Tap Delete all when prompted and complete any remaining on-screen steps.
The tablet returns to its initial setup screen when the reset is complete. Samsung Philippines’ Galaxy tablet guide, last updated June 22, 2022, states: “Factory Resetting a mobile device is not reversible.”

Factory-reset a locked tablet through Recovery
Use this method when you cannot operate the tablet normally or access Settings. It erases data, and button combinations differ by model. Check Samsung’s instructions for your precise Galaxy Tab before proceeding.

- Switch off the tablet. If it asks for a PIN, password, or pattern you cannot enter, Samsung says it will switch off when its battery runs out.
- For a model with a physical Home button, hold Volume Up, Power, and Home together. For a model without a Home button, hold Volume Up and Power together.
- Release the buttons when the Recovery menu appears.
- Use Volume Down to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power to select it.
- Highlight the confirmation option, such as Yes, and press Power. When the process finishes, choose the reboot option if shown.
Account checks can remain after a reset
A hardware-button reset does not remove proof-of-ownership safeguards. Samsung says Google Factory Reset Protection may ask for the Google account previously registered on the tablet after a reset performed outside the Settings factory-reset option. On Android 9 and later, the previously configured screen lock may also be offered for verification. These protections are intended to deter use of lost or stolen devices; do not attempt to bypass them.
A Samsung account password may also be required. Samsung US notes that a network connection is needed to log out of a Samsung account before completing a reset when one is signed in. If you cannot verify the required account or finish setup, contact Samsung support or a service centre.
