To change the password used to unlock your Samsung tablet, open Settings > Lock screen (or Lock screen and AOD) and choose Screen lock type. To change the separate password for Samsung services, go to Settings > Samsung account > Security and privacy > Password. These credentials do different jobs, so choose the steps that match what you want to protect.
First, identify which password you mean
A screen-lock credential protects access to the tablet. A Samsung account password is used for Samsung services and account features; changing it does not change the tablet’s screen lock.

Change the password or lock method used to unlock the tablet
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen. On some software versions, the section is called Lock screen and AOD.
- Tap Screen lock type. If you cannot find it, search for “Screen lock type” in Settings.
- Enter your current screen-lock credential if prompted.
- Select Password for an alphanumeric password, or choose another available method, such as a PIN or pattern.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enter and confirm the new credential.
Samsung’s official manual describes this general route and the available types of screen lock, but it is for an older phone, not a current tablet. Menu names and available options can therefore differ by tablet model and software version. Samsung Galaxy S9+ manual: changing the screen lock method

Change the Samsung account password
- Open Settings on the Galaxy tablet.
- Tap the Samsung account name at the top of Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy, then Password.
- Enter the current password, then enter the new password twice.
- Tap Next and follow any remaining prompts.
For security, Samsung may sign the account out on the tablet after the change. If that happens, sign in again with the new password and complete two-step verification if requested. If you forgot your Samsung account password
Use Reset password in the Galaxy account sign-in flow or Samsung’s web password-reset process. Samsung’s recovery steps may ask you to verify your identity using the account email address and associated phone number. Depending on the available options, verification may use text, email, previously selected security questions, or a date of birth. If you cannot find the screen-lock setting
- Search Settings for Screen lock type.
- Check the support information for your exact tablet model and software version if the menu path or labels differ.
