If you can open Settings, use the tablet’s built-in factory-reset option. If the tablet is frozen or inaccessible, use the Recovery procedure for your exact Galaxy Tab model—not a button combination assumed to work on every tablet. A factory reset erases personal data; it is different from restarting the tablet, which does not erase saved information.
Before you reset the tablet
- Back up anything you need. A factory reset deletes personal data, and Samsung warns that it may not be recoverable. Save photos, documents, and other files before proceeding if the tablet is accessible. Samsung’s reset guidance explains what the reset removes.
- Decrypt an encrypted microSD card first. Samsung says an encrypted card may not be readable by the tablet after the reset.
- Have your account credentials available. A Settings reset may ask for the screen-lock credentials and Samsung account password. Samsung says a network connection is needed to log out of a Samsung account during the reset flow.
- Identify the model if you cannot use Settings. If available, find the model number in Settings > About tablet; otherwise, check the device packaging or the model information printed on the tablet. Use that exact model to find Samsung’s instructions before trying Recovery controls.
If you can still navigate the tablet and are preparing it for someone else, use the Settings reset route below and follow Samsung’s ownership-transfer guidance. A Recovery reset can lead to additional Google account verification during setup.

Choose the reset route that fits your situation

Reset a Samsung tablet from Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Reset.
- Choose Factory data reset and review the listed information about what will be erased.
- Tap Reset, then confirm with Delete all.
- If prompted, enter the screen-lock credentials or Samsung account password. The tablet will restart to its initial setup screen.
Menu names and layouts can differ by model and software version. If you do not see the listed path, search Settings for “Factory data reset.” Samsung’s current US support guide covers Galaxy phones and tablets, while its Galaxy tablet guide provides tablet-focused instructions.
Use Recovery when Settings is unavailable
Recovery is intended for cases where you cannot navigate the normal Settings menus. Follow Samsung’s instructions for the exact model; the available guidance does not establish one button-hold sequence for every Galaxy Tab.

- Look up the model-specific Samsung manual or support instructions before starting. Button layout and the steps for entering Recovery can vary.
- In the Recovery menu, use the volume keys to highlight Wipe data/factory reset (the wording may vary).
- Press the power key to select the highlighted option, then follow the on-screen confirmation prompts.
Do not try a sequence copied for a different model if it does not match your tablet’s instructions. Recovery erases data and may trigger Google Factory Reset Protection during setup.
Complete Google verification after a Recovery reset
Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is intended to deter unauthorized resets. After a Recovery wipe, setup may ask for the Google account previously associated with the tablet. Depending on the Android version, the former screen-lock method may also be accepted. A factory reset does not remove this ownership check.

If you forgot the Google password
Use Google’s account-recovery process. Samsung Canada says that after a Google password reset, a 24-hour wait may be required before the new password can unlock the device. Contact an authorized Samsung service center and bring proof of purchase. Samsung recommends this route when the owner cannot complete verification. Do not use reset instructions or tools that claim to bypass the ownership check.

What a factory reset will—and won’t—do
- It restores the tablet to its factory settings and removes personal data stored on the device.
- It is not the same as restarting, and it does not preserve local data unless you have backed it up elsewhere.
- It does not guarantee recovery of a forgotten account password or remove Google ownership verification.
- It is not a repair for hardware faults; the reset procedure alone does not establish that a physical problem will be fixed.
