Choose the Samsung T9 if you regularly move large files or want portable storage for active work—and your computer supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. Choose an external hard drive when you mainly need a bulk-storage destination and can accept slower transfers. For important files, keep another independent copy: neither drive alone is a complete backup plan.
What matters most: your computer’s USB connection
The Samsung T9 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, a 20Gbps interface. Samsung lists sequential read speeds up to 2,000 MB/s. Maximum sequential write speed is up to 1,950 MB/s for the 1TB and 2TB models, and up to 2,000 MB/s for the 4TB model. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed speeds on every computer.

To approach those figures, the host connection must support USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. A USB-C port by itself does not establish that support; check your computer’s specifications. Samsung says its maximum transfer speed was measured using internal testing standards with the included cable, and that results vary with the host configuration, cable, and system environment. The package includes USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables, but the connector shape alone does not determine speed. Samsung’s 2023 T9 data sheet gives the interface and testing qualifications.

An external hard drive is generally the slower choice for transfers, but the specific drive matters. Samsung’s 2025 brochure compares the T9’s maximum of up to 2,000 MB/s with a 120 MB/s external hard drive reference. That is Samsung’s selected comparison, not a universal measurement of every HDD; actual drive and connection speeds vary. Samsung’s 2025 portable SSD brochure

Samsung T9 vs. an external hard drive
| Factor | Samsung T9 portable SSD | External hard drive |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer speed | Up to 2,000 MB/s sequential read; maximum write varies by capacity. Samsung’s figures depend on host, cable, and system conditions. | Samsung’s 2025 brochure uses 120 MB/s as an external HDD reference; this is not a universal HDD benchmark. |
| Listed capacity | 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB in Samsung’s 2023 data sheet. | Varies by model; no specific model or capacity is established here. |
| Best-fit role | Active files, frequent transfers, and portable working storage. | Bulk-storage destination when transfer speed is less important. |
| Portability and handling | Portable SSD. Samsung claims drop resistance up to 3m under a controlled free-fall test onto a metal plate; damage from a drop is not covered under warranty. | Varies by model; no specific handling or drop-resistance claim is established here. |
| Price per terabyte | Not established as a current market-wide comparison. | Not established as a current market-wide comparison. |
Is the Samsung T9 worth it for backups?
It can work as a backup destination if fast transfers are valuable to you, but speed does not make one external drive a safe, complete backup strategy. Keep another independent copy of important files, ideally somewhere separate from the T9. A drive can be lost, damaged, or fail; the available product specifications do not establish comparative failure rates or long-term data-retention performance for SSDs versus HDDs.
The T9’s listed features include AES 256-bit hardware encryption and Samsung Portable SSD and Samsung Magician software. These are product features, not guarantees against drive failure or data loss. Samsung lists a five-year limited warranty; check the terms applicable to your region and purchase. Warranty coverage is not a substitute for keeping another copy. Samsung’s T9 data sheet

Should you buy an external SSD or hard drive for large files?
Pick the T9 for frequent transfers or active files
The T9 is the better fit when you move large projects often, work directly from portable storage, or value shorter transfer waits. Before buying, confirm USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 support on the computer you will use. If it lacks that interface, do not assume the T9 will reach its advertised maximum speed.

Pick an HDD for bulk storage when speed is secondary
If the drive will mostly hold files you access occasionally, and transfers do not need to be fast, an external hard drive may fit the role. The comparison here does not establish that HDDs are always cheaper: compare current prices for the same capacity and account for how often you will wait on transfers.

Match capacity to the files you need to keep
Samsung lists the T9 in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Estimate the size of your current files and leave room for growth before choosing. External HDD capacities depend on the particular model, so compare the capacities actually available to you rather than assuming a category-wide figure.
