Its main drawback today is straightforward: Samsung marks it discontinued, and its headline speed of up to 540 MB/s depends on the host, cable, and UASP support. Before buying one, check the unit’s condition, warranty, return terms, and compatibility with your devices.
Samsung T5 pros and cons at a glance
| Pros | Cons and limits |
|---|---|
| Compact body measuring 74 × 57.3 × 10.5 mm and weighing about 51 g, according to Samsung’s 2017 launch specifications (Samsung Global Newsroom). | Samsung identifies the original T5 as discontinued (Samsung Semiconductor). |
| USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface with backward compatibility for earlier USB connections, subject to the connected device and operating system (Samsung Semiconductor). | Up to 540 MB/s is a conditional manufacturer maximum, not a guaranteed speed for every computer, port, cable, or workload (Samsung Semiconductor). |
| Optional AES 256-bit hardware encryption and password protection through Samsung software (Samsung Semiconductor). | Samsung’s listed software requirements are legacy minimums; they do not establish compatibility with every current operating system or device. |
| No moving parts, metal body, and shock resistance are features Samsung described in its launch material (Samsung Global Newsroom). | Those descriptions do not amount to a guarantee against all drops, damage, or data loss. |
What the T5’s speed figure means
Samsung lists transfer speeds of up to 540 MB/s. To reach that maximum, Samsung says both the host device and connection cable must support USB 3.1 Gen 2, and UASP mode must be enabled. Samsung also cautions that performance varies with host configuration (Samsung Semiconductor).

The T5 launched with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface rated at 10 Gbps (Samsung Global Newsroom). That interface rating and the 540 MB/s product figure describe different things: the former is the connection standard’s signaling rate, while the latter is Samsung’s stated drive transfer maximum. Neither figure guarantees the speed you will see during a particular file copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- A slower USB port or cable can limit throughput.
- For the advertised maximum, verify USB 3.1 Gen 2 support at both ends and UASP support on the host.
- Samsung’s specification is not an independent benchmark or a measured sustained-speed result for your setup.
Portability, build, and protection
At about 51 g and 74 × 57.3 × 10.5 mm, the T5 is small and light enough to carry easily. Samsung’s launch announcement described a metal body, no moving parts, and shock resistance (Samsung Global Newsroom). These are useful design attributes, but the cited specifications do not establish waterproofing or protection against every kind of impact. Keep another copy of important files rather than treating physical toughness as a backup plan.

Encryption and software compatibility
The T5 supports optional AES 256-bit hardware encryption and password protection using Samsung’s companion software (Samsung Semiconductor). Password protection is useful only if you can access the required software on the device you plan to use. Samsung’s published operating-system requirements are legacy minimums, so check current compatibility for your particular computer or mobile device before relying on the feature.
Plan for password recovery before enabling encryption. If you forget the password or cannot use compatible software, access to protected data may be lost; retain a separate, accessible backup of important files.

Connectivity and capacities
Samsung launched the original T5 in 250 GB, 500 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB capacities (Samsung Global Newsroom). The original package included USB-C-to-C and USB-C-to-A cables, according to Samsung’s product information (Samsung Semiconductor). If buying a used unit, confirm which cables are included and that any replacement is a data cable suited to the port and performance you need.

The original T5 is not the same product as the later T5 EVO. Samsung identifies the T5 EVO separately and specifies USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) for that model (Samsung Semiconductor). Do not use the EVO’s specifications to infer the original T5’s capabilities.

Should you buy a Samsung T5 now?
Because Samsung marks the original T5 discontinued, the practical buying decision depends on the specific listing rather than the model name alone. Samsung’s regional product page may still show specifications even though the product is discontinued; that does not confirm local stock. No current price, marketplace inventory, or independent head-to-head performance result is established here.
- Check whether the drive is new or used, and inspect its condition.
- Confirm the seller’s return terms and what warranty, if any, applies to that unit. Samsung announced a three-year limited warranty at launch in 2017, but that historical term is not a guarantee for a discontinued or secondhand drive (Samsung Global Newsroom).
- Verify that the cables and host ports match your use, especially if you expect speeds near Samsung’s stated maximum.
- If you need password protection, check software compatibility before purchase and decide how you will preserve access to the password-protected data.
The T5’s established strengths are its portability, broad USB connectivity, and optional hardware encryption. Whether it is a sensible buy depends on the condition, terms, compatibility, and price of the particular unit; the available specifications alone cannot establish its value against current alternatives.
