If your Samsung phone or tablet keeps flashing the Samsung logo instead of reaching the lock screen, it is stuck at the startup logo or in a boot loop. The logo alone does not identify the cause: Samsung lists software problems, low battery, downloaded apps and hardware issues among the possibilities. Work through the checks below in order, and leave a factory reset until last because it erases the device’s data.
What the flashing Samsung logo tells you—and what it doesn’t
A logo that stays on screen or appears again and again means the Galaxy device is not completing startup. It does not, by itself, prove that the battery, software or a particular component has failed. The model, software version, whether the logo is static or cycling, and what happened just before the problem all matter. Start with checks that do not erase data. If the phone shows impact or liquid damage, skip attempts to open or repair it yourself and arrange a professional inspection.

Try these steps in order
1. Inspect the device
Check for a cracked screen or body, signs of impact or liquid exposure, and damage or corrosion around the charging port. If you see damage, contact Samsung or a qualified service provider rather than guessing which part to replace.

2. Charge it with compatible equipment
A fully discharged battery may not immediately display a charging indicator. Connect the device to a Samsung-certified charger and a cable compatible with your model, then leave it charging even if the screen stays blank. If you suspect the charger or cable, try a known-good spare. A charging check can address a power problem; it is not a general fix for a software or hardware boot loop. Samsung’s boot-loop guidance covers this check.
3. Restart the phone or tablet
If the power menu opens, choose Restart. If the device is frozen, Samsung’s general instructions say to hold the Side and Volume down buttons for more than seven seconds, until it restarts. Button names and behavior can differ by model; if that combination does not work, follow the instructions for your exact Galaxy model rather than trying random button combinations.

4. Use Safe mode to check for a downloaded app
Safe mode runs the device’s core software while disabling downloaded apps. Use it only if you can reach the power options needed to enter Safe mode. If the startup problem stops there, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time and check whether normal startup returns.

5. Check for an available update with Smart Switch
If a Mac or Windows computer recognizes the device, Samsung’s Smart Switch application may offer an Update option when an update is available. Connect with the supplied USB cable if possible, keep the cable connected during the update, and do not use the device until it finishes. Smart Switch will not necessarily detect or recover every device stuck at the logo.
Samsung also documents Emergency Software Recovery for certain devices affected by an update error. If that recovery repeatedly fails on one computer, Samsung’s instructions describe using the emergency recovery code on another computer. This route applies to certain update-error cases; it is not a guaranteed recovery method for every boot problem. See Samsung’s Smart Switch emergency software recovery guide.

6. Consider a factory reset only after other options
A factory data reset removes the device’s data and content. If your information is not backed up, do not treat a reset as a harmless troubleshooting step: contact Samsung support or a service center first to ask what options may be available. If you do have a backup and decide to proceed, follow the reset instructions for your exact model and software version.
Samsung says a factory reset should be used only after trying the previous steps. Google likewise warns that resetting removes phone data and recommends backing up first in its Android factory-reset guidance.

When to get professional help
Contact Samsung support or a Samsung service center if the device has visible damage, will not charge or restart, remains stuck after the Safe mode and Smart Switch checks, or cannot complete setup. Samsung’s U.S. guidance includes service-center and online repair options, but availability depends on your location. Use Samsung’s support pages to find the options available where you are.
