Application server computing is the practice of running application logic on server-side software that hosts application code and manages its execution. That software can also provide shared runtime services—such as request handling, security, transactions, or database access—so applications do not have to implement every capability themselves. An application server is software, not the physical computer it runs on.
What an application server does
An application server provides an environment in which server-side applications can be deployed and run. Depending on the platform and product, it may manage application components and provide services such as dependency injection, HTTP handling, security, transaction management, REST support, or pooled access to resources such as databases. No single list of services applies to every application server.

In Jakarta EE, a standards-based example, the server implements platform APIs, runs containers, deploys applications, and provides administration and other features. The Jakarta EE tutorial describes it as software that runs containers and deploys applications into them (Jakarta EE tutorial: Overview). Jakarta EE is one example of the category, not a universal definition: application servers are not all Java-based or Jakarta EE products.

How the server, container, and application fit together
These terms describe different layers. The application is the code that performs the work. A container is the managed runtime in which certain application components execute; it mediates access to platform services. The application server runs the containers and provides the broader environment for deploying and managing applications.

- Container: a runtime that hosts components and supplies or manages access to services.
- Application server: server-side software that runs containers, deploys applications, and may provide administration and additional platform capabilities.
Do not confuse a Jakarta EE container with an operating-system container such as a Docker or OCI container. A Jakarta EE container executes application code and supplies application-level services; a Docker or OCI container provides operating-system-level isolation and services. A Jakarta EE application can run inside a Docker container (Jakarta EE tutorial: Overview).
How a web request travels through an application server
In a typical Jakarta EE web request, a client sends an HTTP request to the web server. A servlet container prepares request and response objects and passes them to a web component, which may use other application components or access a database. The server then sends the generated response back to the client. The response might be an HTML page for a person or structured data such as JSON or XML for another application (Jakarta EE tutorial: Servlets).

The servlet container can be part of a Jakarta EE application-server runtime. This is why web-server and application-server responsibilities can appear together in one product: the web-facing component handles HTTP traffic, while the application runtime hosts components and supplies other services.

A web server is centered on web-protocol handling and content delivery. An application server is centered on running application logic and managing its runtime. These are functional distinctions, not a guarantee that two separate machines or products are involved. Some application servers include web-server capabilities or a web container; the precise boundary depends on the architecture and product (Jakarta EE tutorial: Overview; Eclipse Foundation: Jakarta EE Servers and Containers).

Which services and components are included?
Capabilities depend on the platform, the version, the profile, and the server implementation. Jakarta EE documentation describes services across its profiles that include dependency injection, RESTful web services, JSON processing, security, HTTP handling, persistence, transactions, managed concurrency, email, messaging, and batch processing. A profile is a defined subset of platform capabilities, so a server supporting one profile should not automatically be assumed to include every service associated with the full platform (Jakarta EE tutorial: Overview).
The Jakarta EE Platform 10 specification describes application-client, web, and enterprise-bean containers, while noting that profiles can support subsets of the platform. This is a version-specific standards description, not a claim that every current application-server product uses those exact component categories (Jakarta EE Platform 10 Specification).

What to check when choosing a runtime
Start with the needs of the application rather than the broad label “application server.” Products and deployment models differ, and the standards define capabilities without establishing a universal product ranking or comparative performance result.

- Deployment and administration: check how components are deployed, configured, monitored, and managed. The Jakarta EE specification requires provider deployment and management tools but does not prescribe their form (Jakarta EE Platform 10 Specification).
- Packaging and architecture: determine whether web handling is bundled with application execution, how containers are exposed, and whether the target is a managed server or an executable application package.
- Operational fit: confirm that the particular product meets the application’s runtime and operational requirements; the term alone does not establish compatibility or performance.
