On a supported Galaxy phone, Samsung Sound Assistant is worth trying when you need per-app volume, finer volume adjustments, or a customized volume panel. For app routing and sound-shaping features, check Samsung’s system settings too: those tools are not all exclusive to Sound Assistant.
What Android’s built-in controls can do
Android’s standard controls adjust common audio streams: media, calls, ring, notifications, and alarms. Which level the volume buttons change depends on what you are doing. Google explains that they adjust the movie’s volume while a movie is playing, and media volume when nothing is playing.

Press a volume button and tap Menu to see the available levels and adjust them. The exact labels and steps can differ by Android version and manufacturer; Google notes that some of its guidance applies to Android 12 and later. The expanded controls also support mute and vibration behavior. Google documents choosing a Bluetooth media output when more than one Bluetooth device is paired.

What Sound Assistant adds on supported Galaxy phones
Samsung describes Sound Assistant in the Galaxy Store as an “Advanced sound utility for your Galaxy.” Its listing includes individual application volume, fine volume adjustment that Samsung describes as “150 steps,” a floating equalizer, and options to customize the volume panel or change its default volume step. The 150-step figure is Samsung’s description of the feature, not a comparative lab measurement.
The listing also describes changing whether the volume keys adjust media rather than ringtone volume, choosing an app audio output between Bluetooth and the speaker from the floating panel, setting a favorite media app for multimedia keys, and other playback controls. These are app features, not a guarantee that every control is available on every Galaxy.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. The Galaxy Store listing reports Sound Assistant version 8.5.00.2 dated 2026-05-22, and warns that some devices may not be supported. Availability and menus depend on the phone and its software. Check the listing and the app on your own device before relying on a specific control.
Sound Assistant and Samsung’s system settings solve different jobs
Sound Assistant’s app-by-app volume control is different from Android’s stream controls: it lets you change an individual app’s volume rather than adjusting media, calls, or other shared streams.

Output routing is another distinction. Sound Assistant’s listing describes switching an app’s output between Bluetooth and the phone speaker in its floating panel. Samsung’s Separate app sound setting instead routes a selected multimedia app to an output different from the phone’s main output. Samsung’s example is music playing through a vehicle’s Bluetooth while navigation audio comes from the phone speaker. The UK support explanation says the selected output must differ from the main output; the connected Bluetooth device appears as an option when connected.

- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound.
- Turn the feature on, select the media app, and choose its output device.
- Connect the Bluetooth device first if you want to select it as the app’s output.
Samsung’s UK explanation of this feature was last updated 2021-05-25, so use it to understand the routing concept rather than as a promise that every current Galaxy has the same menu. Samsung says options and screens can vary with model and software.
Check Galaxy sound settings before installing an extra utility
If your goal is sound shaping rather than app-volume control, look in Samsung’s system settings. Samsung support documents Equalizer, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Atmos for gaming, Adapt sound with a personalized hearing-profile flow, and UHQ upscaler for wired earphones. Multiple Bluetooth audio outputs, called Dual audio, are model-dependent.

These system features are not all Sound Assistant features. Samsung’s support guidance, updated 2026-04-28, cautions that some options are available only on certain models because of hardware limitations. Names, menus, and availability can also vary with software; check the settings on your phone. UHQ upscaler is relevant when wired earphones are connected, so compatibility with the phone and earphones matters.
Which option should you use?
| What you want to do | Best place to start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Adjust media, call, ring, notification, or alarm volume; mute or use vibration | Android’s built-in controls | They provide the standard stream and alert controls. |

| Make volume adjustments finer or customize the volume panel | Sound Assistant, if supported | Samsung lists fine volume adjustment and panel options. |
| Send one multimedia app to a different output from the phone’s main output | Galaxy Settings > Separate app sound | This system setting handles selected-app routing; available devices depend on what is connected. |
| Use an equalizer, Dolby mode, or personalized hearing profile | Galaxy sound settings | Samsung documents these as system sound-quality features, with model and software caveats. |
| Play audio on multiple Bluetooth outputs | Check Galaxy Settings for Dual audio | Samsung documents this feature as model-dependent. |
Google’s Android volume guidance is available in its Android Help page on changing volume, sound, and vibration settings. Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing for Sound Assistant describes app features and device support. Its Galaxy sound settings support page covers system audio options, while the Samsung UK guide to Separate app sound explains app routing.
