If your orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses cause blurry or reduced vision, discomfort, pain, redness, unusual tearing or discharge, halos, or light sensitivity, remove them immediately. Leave them out if symptoms continue and promptly contact the eye care practitioner who prescribed them. Do not put them back in just because symptoms briefly improve.
What to do right now
- Remove the lenses as soon as you notice symptoms. FDA-approved patient labeling for an Ortho-K lens says to remove lenses immediately for eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes, or redness, and not to wear them again until instructed by the eye care practitioner. FDA-approved lens labeling also lists blur, pain, halos, and light sensitivity among possible problems. Follow the instructions for your specific lenses if removal is difficult.
- Keep the lenses out if the problem persists, worsens, or returns. Promptly contact your prescribing practitioner for advice and an assessment. Persistent symptoms can signal a condition needing treatment, including infection or a corneal ulcer; symptoms alone cannot establish the cause. FDA labeling calls for professional attention when problems continue. FDA patient labeling
- Do not decide on your own that it is normal adaptation. Blurry or variable vision can occur with Ortho-K, but a new, painful, worsening, or persistent change still warrants professional guidance. Do not resume lens wear until your practitioner tells you to.
- Use only your prescribed lens-care routine. Do not use water, saline, or rewetting drops to disinfect lenses; do not reuse or top off old solution; and do not store lenses or rinse the case in water. Use the care products and instructions specified for your lenses. FDA lens-care guidance
- Keep follow-up appointments. Your practitioner needs to check your vision and lens health as part of Ortho-K care. FDA information on Ortho-K
Can Ortho-K cause blurry or variable vision?
Yes. Ortho-K uses specially designed rigid gas permeable lenses to temporarily change the cornea’s curvature. The lenses are generally worn overnight and removed on waking; the vision effect is temporary and depends on following the prescribed wearing schedule. FDA information

FDA-approved patient information for a specific Ortho-K lens recognizes blurry or variable vision, especially late in the day, as a possible effect and says blur and its duration may decrease over time. That lens-specific information does not show that any individual episode is harmless. In particular, it is not a reason to ignore discomfort, pain, redness, or a persistent or worsening change in vision.

FDA labeling lists symptoms that can occur with contact lenses, including stinging, burning, itching, pain, reduced comfort, a foreign-body sensation, excessive tearing, unusual discharge, redness, reduced sharpness, blur, halos, and light sensitivity. Remove the lenses immediately if these occur. If symptoms continue after removal, contact your prescribing practitioner promptly rather than trying to diagnose or treat the problem yourself. Overnight lens wear carries contact-lens risks. FDA-approved patient information notes that corneal infection risk is greater for people who sleep in their lenses than for people who do not. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern likewise notes increased microbial keratitis risk with overnight orthokeratology. These are general risk statements, not a way to estimate your personal risk or determine whether a particular symptom is an infection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact your eye care practitioner
Contact the practitioner who prescribed the lenses promptly if symptoms remain after removal, get worse, or recur. The available guidance does not establish a universal number of hours that is safe to wait. Follow the practitioner’s advice about when to be assessed and when, if ever, to restart lens wear. If you cannot reach that practitioner and symptoms are severe or worsening, seek urgent eye care.
