Choose the tracker that matches the phone ecosystem you already use. Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 is managed through SmartThings Find on compatible Galaxy devices; Apple AirTag is managed through Apple’s Find My network. Both can use nearby devices to help locate a tag beyond direct Bluetooth range, but the available manufacturer information does not establish a universal winner for coverage or recovery speed.
Which phones work with SmartTag2 and AirTag?
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2
Samsung’s U.S. materials specify a Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, a Samsung account, and registration in SmartThings Find for the listed SmartTag2 requirements. Full functionality, including Compass View, requires a UWB-enabled Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later. Requirements can differ by feature and region, so check the local product page and your phone before buying. Samsung SmartTag2 product details and Samsung’s launch announcement provide the cited requirements.

Apple AirTag
Apple’s technical specifications list Find My compatibility for iPhone and iPod touch models running iOS 14.5 or later. AirTag is managed through Apple’s Find My ecosystem; Android support described by Apple is for unwanted-tracker alerts and identifying a found tag, not for managing an AirTag as its owner. See Apple’s AirTag page and AirTag technical specifications.

Neither product is a fully interchangeable tracker that an owner can set up and manage from either iOS or Android. A finder may be able to read contact details registered to a lost tag over NFC without being able to manage that tag.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
How do they find a tag nearby or at a distance?
Direct Bluetooth finding
Samsung describes SmartTag2 as using Bluetooth Low Energy and states a maximum range of up to 120 metres without obstacles. That is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not a guaranteed distance; walls and other obstructions can reduce performance. Samsung’s U.S. product materials describe the range.
Finding beyond direct range
When a SmartTag2 is out of direct Bluetooth range, Samsung says opted-in Galaxy devices can help locate it through the Galaxy Find Network. Apple says nearby devices in the Find My network can detect an AirTag’s secure Bluetooth signal. Both approaches depend on nearby participating devices and their ability to report a location; neither cited source provides a like-for-like measure of network size, coverage, or recovery speed.

For both trackers, an out-of-range location is not the same as a guaranteed live connection to the tag. The setting, participating devices nearby, connectivity, and surroundings affect what location information becomes available. There is no basis here to declare one network universally more reliable.
What directional-finding features do they offer?
SmartTag2 Compass View
SmartTag2’s Compass View requires a UWB-enabled Galaxy phone running Android 11 or later. Samsung cautions that obstructions can reduce accuracy. Check both the phone’s UWB support and the feature requirements for your region. Samsung’s product page and launch announcement describe the feature.

AirTag Precision Finding
Apple describes Precision Finding using Ultra Wideband on compatible Apple hardware. The exact compatible-device list can depend on the AirTag generation and device, so consult Apple’s technical specifications rather than assuming every iPhone supports directional finding.
Do AirTag and SmartTag2 warn you about unwanted tracking?
Apple and Google announced cross-platform alerts for Bluetooth trackers compatible with the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers industry specification. Apple says an iOS alert can indicate that another person’s AirTag, Find My accessory, or compatible tracker is moving with you. These are safety-detection features; they do not make Android an AirTag owner-management platform. See Apple’s announcement with Google.

Samsung’s announcement describes alerts when the service detects an unknown SmartTag moving with the user. Do not treat this as a guarantee that it detects every brand of tracker. See Samsung’s support instructions and Samsung’s announcement.
What happens when someone finds a lost tag?
SmartTag2 Lost Mode can display contact information and a message registered in advance when a finder taps the tag with an NFC-capable phone. Samsung’s U.S. product page says the finder also needs an internet connection to access that information. Samsung SmartTag2 product details.

These are Apple’s claims, not a directly comparable battery test against SmartTag2. Apple AirTag page and technical specifications.
How do the battery-life claims compare?
| Tracker | Manufacturer battery-life claim | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 | Up to 500 days in normal use; up to 700 days in Power Saving Mode | Samsung’s 2023 estimate came from internal laboratory testing with a pre-release unit and the included CR2032 battery. Actual life varies with use, phone, and battery manufacturer. Power Saving Mode limits operation to basic Bluetooth finding functions. Samsung launch announcement and Samsung makers interview. |
| Apple AirTag | More than one year | Apple’s product claim is tied to the usage pattern described in its technical specifications, including daily sound and Precision Finding use. It is not a matched test against Samsung’s estimate. Apple AirTag page and technical specifications. |
