Use the directional pad to move around your Samsung TV, press Select or Enter to choose an item, and press Home to open the home screen. On supported Smart Remotes, hold Return and Play/Pause together for about three seconds to pair when automatic connection does not work. Samsung remotes vary by TV model, remote generation, software, and country, so treat these steps as common guidance—not a match for every remote.
Start with the everyday controls
Turn on the TV. If the remote cannot do that, use the TV’s physical power/controller button if your model has one. Once the TV is on, try these common Smart Remote controls:

- Directional pad: Move between on-screen items.
- Select or Enter: Choose the highlighted item.
- Home: Open the TV’s home interface.
- Volume control: Slide up or down to adjust sound; on supported SolarCell Remotes, press it to mute or unmute.
- Channel control: Slide to change channels; on the SolarCell Remote covered by Samsung’s support instructions, press it to open the channel guide.
These controls are documented across different Samsung remote generations, but their placement and exact functions are not universal. Samsung’s Q9FN Series manual shows one example of a Samsung remote layout; your remote may look different.

Try automatic connection first
Some SolarCell Remotes connect when the TV is on and you press a remote button. If the TV responds, no manual pairing is needed.

Pair manually if it does not connect
- Turn on the TV and point the remote toward it.
- Press and hold Return and Play/Pause at the same time for about three seconds.
- Release the buttons when the TV displays a connection confirmation.
This combination is Samsung’s documented pairing method for supported Smart Remotes. Button names and pairing behavior can differ, so consult the instructions for your TV and remote if the confirmation does not appear. See Samsung’s Smart Remote connection guide.
Use voice commands and shortcuts when available
If your remote has a microphone, press its voice button and speak. Select SolarCell Remotes support Bixby or Alexa, and some remotes include dedicated app buttons. Voice assistants, supported languages, and shortcut buttons depend on the model and region; a remote without a microphone or the relevant button will not offer those controls.

Charge a SolarCell Remote
Check the back and bottom of the remote before choosing a charging method. A rear solar panel can collect charge when you leave the remote with the panel facing upward under indoor lighting or near a window. USB-C charging is available only on remotes with a USB-C port; Samsung notes that some remotes without a solar panel may still have that port. The Samsung SolarCell Remote charging guidance covers the supported hardware. It does not establish one universal charge time or runtime.

- No LED: The remote and TV may already be connected over Bluetooth.
- Double blink: The Bluetooth connection may have been lost. Infrared functions such as channel and volume control can still work, while voice navigation and other smart features may not.
- LED stays on for at least five seconds after a button press: The remote needs charging.
For a battery-level check, Samsung’s guide for 2025 models gives the path Settings > All Settings > General & Privacy > Remote Control. The menu path may be different or unavailable on other models and software versions.

Basic controls work, but voice or smart features do not
This pattern can indicate that Bluetooth has disconnected while infrared control remains available. Pair the remote again using the steps above. Samsung’s guidance on indicator behavior and connection is available in its charging and Bluetooth support page and pairing instructions.

Reboot or reset the remote
Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions for covered Smart Remote models describe two button combinations. They are not universal, so verify that the sequence applies to your remote before using it:
- Reboot: Hold Return and Enter together for at least 10 seconds.
- Reset, then pair again: Hold Return and Voice for at least three seconds to reset. Then hold Return and Play/Pause for at least three seconds to pair.

The TV still does not respond
Confirm that the remote has power, then check the model-specific manual and Samsung support information for your TV. If the controls remain unresponsive, consult the TV’s software-update guidance and support options; a reset is not guaranteed to fix every fault. If you need a replacement, check compatibility against your TV’s exact model number rather than assuming a broadly described remote will work.
Check your model before following a mismatched guide
Samsung has released multiple remote designs, and button layouts, charging hardware, settings paths, and pairing steps vary. Find the remote or TV model number and use the corresponding manual if your buttons or menus do not match. Samsung’s 2025 SolarCell Remote guide is model-focused and was last updated May 14, 2025; instructions for that generation should not be assumed to apply to every Samsung TV.
