Samsung Galaxy phones may include Smart Call, a built-in way to identify and block spam calls in the Phone app—so you can try its protections without installing a separate app. Availability and options vary by carrier, country, device and software version, and Samsung warns that mobile-data use may incur charges.
Does Samsung Galaxy have a free spam blocker?
Samsung calls its Phone app feature Smart Call. It can identify callers who are not saved in your contacts and let you block or report calls. Samsung says Smart Call features are provided by Hiya.

The FCC described Samsung’s Hiya-powered service in a 2021 filing as providing caller ID, spam flags and automatic blocking of known fraud calls “at no additional charge.” That is a historical description, not a guarantee about every current device or any charges associated with mobile data. Samsung cautions that data use may result in additional charges.

Choose how aggressively to block calls
Samsung documents two choices under Block spam and scam calls. The trade-off is how broad the blocking is—not a proven difference in detection accuracy; Samsung’s guidance does not provide comparative accuracy figures.

| Setting | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Block all spam and scam calls | Blocks calls identified as spam or scams. | Broader blocking may stop more unwanted calls, but also carries a greater risk of blocking a call you wanted. |
| Only block high-risk scam calls | Blocks calls identified as high-risk scams. | More selective; less severe spam calls may still get through. |
Can I block all unknown numbers?
Spam identification and unknown-number blocking are separate controls. Samsung’s Block numbers setting can block numbers that are not saved in your contacts; Smart Call can also help identify numbers it flags. Blocking every unsaved number can silence legitimate callers, such as a delivery driver or a new contact. Blocking voicemail from a particular caller may require help from your carrier.
Why don’t I see Caller ID and spam protection?
Smart Call is not available on every carrier or Galaxy model, and Samsung says features vary by country and device. If the setting is missing or the feature does not work, check your carrier, phone model, country and software version rather than assuming the phone is broken.

If the feature remains unavailable, ask your carrier whether it supports Smart Call on your device.
What about Samsung’s AI Scam detection?
AI Scam detection is a separate feature from Smart Call’s caller ID and blocking settings. Samsung limits it to Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. It alerts you to a suspected scam and leaves the decision to answer or block the call to you; it does not automatically make that choice for you.
