To hire an India-based developer for an iPhone app, define the first release, compare candidates on shipped iOS work and the people who will actually build it, then use a written contract with staged deliverables and objective acceptance criteria. Choose a freelancer when you can manage a bounded task; consider a team or agency when design, backend, testing and coordination need to be covered together.
Choose the hiring route that fits your project
There is no universally best route. The right choice depends on how much work is involved and how much delivery management you can handle. The freelancer-versus-agency distinction below reflects commercial hiring guidance, not an independent comparative study.

| Route | May fit when | Verify before hiring |
|---|---|---|
| Individual freelancer | You need a well-defined feature, interface fix, code review or small build, and can manage the work. | Relevant shipped iOS work, the candidate’s personal contribution, availability, communication, testing and handover practices, and a clear contract and chain of rights. |
| Agency or development studio | The scope spans design, backend, quality assurance and project management, or you need continuity across a broader build. | Who will actually work on the project, each person’s role, references, subcontracting arrangements, milestone acceptance and source-code handover. |
| Marketplace engagement | You want to discover independent developers and use a platform’s contract or payment workflow. | Current platform terms and fees, identity and references, platform-specific intellectual-property and tax terms, and whether the arrangement you propose complies with platform rules. |
A commercial guide recommends checking live work, confirming assigned staff, speaking with references and considering a paid trial or milestone. Treat that as a useful checklist, not a guarantee of quality. Outsource From India’s hiring guide also argues that agencies can provide project-management support and team coverage; assess whether those services are actually included in the proposal.

A short, specific brief makes proposals easier to compare and reduces the chance that different developers price different assumptions. Describe:
#1 Best Overall
- The target user and problem the app should solve.
- The core user journeys and must-have screens.
- Whether the app needs a backend, APIs, accounts, payments or other integrations.
- Accessibility needs, launch geography and supported devices or operating-system targets, once established for the project.
- What belongs in the first release, what can wait and what still depends on a technical decision.
Ask each candidate to list assumptions, exclusions and risks before estimating. Request proposals against the same brief, with named team members and a clear account of who is responsible for design, development, testing and delivery.
Vet the people and their iOS work
- Review relevant work. Ask for App Store examples or a demonstrated build where available. For each one, ask what the proposed developer personally contributed; a portfolio entry alone does not establish their role.
- Speak with references. Ask past clients about communication, reliability, handling of changes and the quality of handover.
- Confirm availability and staffing. For an agency, verify that the people presented in the proposal are the people assigned to your project, and agree how substitutions or subcontracting will be handled.
- Test the working relationship with a paid milestone. Give the candidate a small, defined deliverable with repository access, review criteria and a handoff. Avoid a large advance payment without staged deliverables.
Keep the work observable as it proceeds: use a repository you control, request regular working builds, document decisions, track issues and retain access to relevant build and testing artifacts. These are practical project controls; the cited sources do not prescribe a particular tool stack.

Put scope, payment and ownership in writing
Sign a written agreement before work begins or you disclose sensitive product information. The Press Information Bureau’s 23 May 2017 summary of India’s model software-procurement RFP identifies topics including scope, service levels, change mechanisms, disputes, intellectual property, liability, payment and acceptance criteria. That procurement document is a checklist of relevant subjects, not a contract template for every private cross-border engagement.
- Scope and completion: Define included work, exclusions, assumptions, platforms and target devices, deliverables and what counts as complete.
- Milestones and acceptance: Set dates, provide objective acceptance tests, explain how to report defects and separate defect fixes from requested changes.
- Fees and changes: State the rate or fixed fee, payment triggers, expenses, currency, applicable taxes and how late or out-of-scope work is approved and charged.
- Intellectual property: Identify who owns the code, designs, documentation and other work product, when rights transfer, how pre-existing or third-party components are treated, and whether the developer must sign further documents.
- Confidentiality and security: Set rules for confidential information, data access, security responsibilities and returning or deleting information at the end of the engagement.
- People and continuity: Name the team, require approval for substitutions or subcontracting, and ensure contributors are covered by compatible confidentiality and intellectual-property terms.
- Exit and support: Define maintenance, defect-correction period, response times, termination, repository access, handover, dispute resolution and governing law.
Upwork’s Legal Center describes platform service contracts, including work-product provisions. Those provisions apply under the platform’s terms; do not assume they replace a separately negotiated agreement or legal advice for your circumstances. For a material commercial build, have counsel familiar with both the buyer’s jurisdiction and the contractor’s location review the agreement.

Compare estimates without treating them as market rates
One commercial guide published in 2026 gives estimates of $15,000–$40,000 for a mid-range app with three to four screens and API integration, and $40,000–$80,000 for a complex product with a custom backend. These are the provider’s project examples, not an independent market survey or a government statistic; the mid-range example includes Android as well as iOS. They do not establish an hourly rate for Indian iOS developers. The guide says cost depends on scope and team seniority. Read the guide’s estimate context and compare proposals based on the same written scope, assumptions, exclusions, planned team, testing and maintenance coverage—not the headline fee alone.
Account for platform-specific tax and cross-border details
Tax treatment depends on the parties and the arrangement. India’s Income Tax Department describes software-development services—including application and information-system development, support, debugging, adaptation and documentation—in its transfer-pricing material. That classification concerns tax rules and certain international transactions between associated enterprises; it does not determine the tax position of every independent-contractor engagement. See the Income Tax Department’s transfer-pricing material.
For Upwork specifically, its guidance says India GST may apply to services for clients and freelancers based in India, and that a valid GSTIN can affect collection. The platform notes that applicable fees or rules may change. This does not establish tax treatment for direct contracts or engagements on other platforms. Check Upwork’s India GST guidance and confirm current invoice treatment for the engagement. Worker classification, withholding, data protection, governing law and other cross-border obligations depend on the facts; get advice for your specific situation.
Plan handover before the build is finished
Make the exit from development part of the delivery plan, not an afterthought. Specify who will provide the source code, build instructions, credentials transfer, third-party service inventory and known-issues list. Agree how long defect fixes are covered, what ongoing maintenance includes, how quickly support requests receive a response and who pays for third-party accounts.
