An employer can use it to let workers access approved services, such as travel or rideshare apps, while limiting those apps’ interaction with company information. It is an IT-managed security feature, not a general-purpose app-cloning tool or a private space hidden from an employer.
What Separated Apps does
Samsung places Separated Apps among Knox Platform for Enterprise device-management capabilities. The feature separates selected apps that are not fully vetted from other apps and data on a fully managed Android device. Samsung describes the isolation as a sandboxed folder or partition; its security explanation says the operating system enforces the separation.

The aim is controlled access, not a promise that an app is harmless or that every device configuration eliminates all security risks. Samsung’s business example is a company allowing employees to use selected travel services on company phones without giving those third-party apps access to confidential work data. A 2025 Samsung government security paper describes a similar approach for limiting third-party apps’ interaction with agency apps and data.

Samsung Business Insights describes the feature as a way for IT administrators to keep out apps that have not been fully vetted from a cybersecurity perspective. Organizations configure it through enterprise mobility-management tools, including Knox Service Plugin.

Who can see and manage the separated apps?
The organization that manages the device controls the configuration. Samsung explicitly warns that apps in this environment are not private from the organization: its mobile-device-management system can have visibility into and control over the applications and their data. Do not treat Separated Apps as a personal vault or a way to hide activity from your employer.
How it differs from other Samsung and Android features
| Feature or approach | What it is for | Who controls the separation |
|---|---|---|
| Separated Apps | Isolating selected third-party apps from work apps and data on managed devices | The organization’s IT administrator through enterprise management |
| Android Work Profile | Separating a work environment from personal use on Android | Work-profile management, with its behavior depending on the device’s setup |
| Ordinary app cloning | Running another instance of an app, often for separate personal accounts | Not the purpose Samsung gives for Separated Apps |
| Samsung Secure Folder | The reviewed Samsung sources do not establish a detailed direct comparison | Do not assume it is the same feature or that one replaced the other |
Samsung characterizes Work Profile as Android’s work/personal separation model, while Separated Apps is a Knox option for isolating selected third-party apps under enterprise policy. The distinction is about purpose and administration; the available documentation does not support claims that one provides a particular level of encryption or device-wide privacy compared with another.

Do you need it on your phone?
If your phone is managed by work
Ask your IT administrator why Separated Apps is enabled, which apps are covered, and what management policies apply. The organization administers the managed configuration, so do not disable or remove a component based on a generic online settings path.
If you own the phone and noticed an app listing or update
The feature’s documented purpose is enterprise device management. Samsung’s reviewed materials do not explain why it might appear on a particular unmanaged phone, nor do they provide a universal removal procedure. Availability and the effect of disabling or removing anything can depend on the device, software version, region, and management policy. Check the device’s management status or contact Samsung support before changing system components if you cannot establish why they are present.

What Samsung’s documentation does—and does not—establish
Samsung’s Knox overview, dated March 25, 2026, and its enterprise materials describe the feature’s purpose and management model, but do not provide a universal consumer settings route, supported-model list, or safe removal instruction. The sources explain isolation as a security design; they do not establish that risk is eliminated in every setup. Treat device-specific behavior as dependent on the phone’s configuration rather than assuming every Galaxy owner needs to use or remove the feature.
