The symptom alone does not identify which one. Start with reversible checks—remove accessories, clean and dry the screen, and restart—then check settings and software before considering a reset or service.
Why a Samsung screen may stop responding to touch
Samsung lists temporary system errors, screen protectors, accessibility settings, moisture, and third-party accessories as possible causes of touchscreen problems. Outdated software or apps, charger issues, and physical display damage may also be relevant. Whether the whole screen is affected, only certain areas, or the problem began after a specific change can help guide troubleshooting, but none of those clues proves a cause.

The steps below apply generally to Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets. Menu names and button layouts vary by model and software version.
What to try first
1. Remove accessories and check the screen
- Remove the case and screen protector, then test the screen again. This is especially useful if the problem began after fitting an accessory or affects taps near the edges. Samsung notes that some accessories can interfere with touch response or gesture recognition.
- Wipe moisture from the display with a soft, dry cloth. Make sure your fingers are clean and dry, and remove gloves while testing.
- If touch problems occur while the device is charging, stop using the touchscreen while it is plugged in. Check the charger for damage and, if needed, test with an undamaged charger.
If removing the protector restores touch response, check that any replacement is made for your exact Galaxy model. A protector will not repair a damaged touchscreen.

2. Restart the device
If you can use the interface, restart the phone or tablet normally. If it is frozen, Samsung’s touchscreen guidance says to hold the Side/Power and Volume Down buttons together for more than seven seconds, until the device restarts. Button combinations can differ by model; consult the instructions for your specific device if this does not work.
Check settings that can change how touch works
Screen sensitivity
If a screen protector is attached and taps seem less responsive, try Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity, if that option is available on your model. The setting may improve response with a protector, but it is not a repair for a broken display.

TalkBack and touch timing
If taps select items without opening them, or the device reads items aloud, TalkBack may be active. In TalkBack, a single tap selects an item, a double tap opens it, and dragging requires two fingers.

Gesture navigation
If the issue is mainly near the screen edges, gesture navigation may be interpreting a touch as a swipe. You can test whether that is involved by checking Settings > Display > Navigation bar and changing the navigation option. Labels and available choices vary by model and software version.
Update the software and check for app problems
Install available device software and app updates; outdated software or an app may cause compatibility problems. If the issue started after installing or updating an app, use Safe mode to check whether a third-party app may be involved. Safe mode temporarily limits third-party apps.

- Start the device in Safe mode using the instructions for your Galaxy model.
- Test the touchscreen in Safe mode. If it works normally there, a third-party app may be contributing to the problem.
- Remove recently installed or updated apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal.
Normal touch response in Safe mode is a clue to investigate apps, not proof that the hardware is fine.
Run a touchscreen diagnostic or get service
If Samsung Members is installed and available on your device, open the app and look for Phone diagnostics and Touch screen testing. Follow the prompts to fill the touch areas and review the result. Availability and menu labels may vary.

If the display has been damaged by a strong impact, stop using the device and arrange an inspection at a Samsung service center. If touch remains unreliable after the checks above, contact Samsung Support or a service provider for assessment. A diagnostic result can help describe the problem, but persistent symptoms may still require inspection.
When to consider a factory reset
Use a factory data reset only after the other troubleshooting steps have failed. It erases data and content on the device, so back up anything important first. Samsung also notes that account credentials or network requirements may affect completing the reset. A reset is not guaranteed to fix a touchscreen problem, especially if the display is physically damaged.
