Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo back up a Samsung Galaxy S22, choose a method based on what you need to recover: use Smart Switch for a local copy or Galaxy-to-Galaxy transfer, Samsung Cloud or Google One for supported device data and setup restore, and OneDrive for selected synced files. These routes do not capture the same things. Before resetting, repairing, or replacing your phone, confirm what the backup contains and how you will restore it.
Choose a backup method for what you need to protect
Samsung lists Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, Google One, and OneDrive among its backup or synchronization options. A useful distinction is whether you need a restorable phone setup, a separate copy of files, or ongoing synchronization. Samsung describes the roles and options in its overview of Galaxy backup and restore methods.

| Method | Best suited to | Restore or access route | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Switch to USB storage | A separate local copy or transfer to another Galaxy | Connect the storage to the destination Galaxy and restore in Smart Switch | Confirm the storage is recognized, has enough free space, and includes the categories you selected. Steps are described in Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy setup guide. |
| Smart Switch to PC or Mac | A local computer copy and later restore | Use Backup in Smart Switch on the computer, then Restore with the receiving Galaxy connected | Confirm Smart Switch is installed on the computer and that the USB connection and selected categories are correct. See Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy setup guide. |
| Samsung Cloud | Supported Galaxy data and settings | Choose Restore data in Samsung Cloud | Available categories vary by region, carrier, phone, and software. Check the backup screen on your S22. Samsung’s Singapore guide describes supported categories. |
| Google One | Account backup used during Android or Galaxy setup | Sign in to the same Google account during initial setup and select an available backup | Verify that a recent backup exists and consider Android-version compatibility. See Samsung’s Google One restore instructions. |
| OneDrive sync | Selected photos or files available through a synced account | Sign in to the synced account and check the files there | Check which folders or categories are syncing and confirm files are present online. Sync is not a complete device restore. Samsung lists this option in its overview. |
There is no single best route for every S22 owner. You can combine methods—for example, keep a local Smart Switch copy while separately syncing photos—but check each copy independently.
Make a local Smart Switch backup
Smart Switch can copy selected data to external storage or a computer. The available screens may differ by app version and storage device; follow the prompts shown on your S22. Samsung documents both routes in its Galaxy setup guide.

Back up to USB storage
- Connect compatible external USB storage to the Galaxy S22. Depending on the storage device, an adapter may be needed.
- Open Smart Switch on the phone and choose the storage or SD-card control.
- Choose USB storage as the destination, select the data categories to copy, and start the backup.
- Wait for the on-screen process to finish. Before relying on the copy, check the completion status and confirm the intended categories were selected.
To restore, connect the storage to the destination Galaxy, open Smart Switch, choose Restore, select the data you want, and follow the prompts. Samsung documents external USB storage but does not specify a particular drive or capacity; check connector, any required adapter, free space, and compatibility.
Back up to a PC or Mac
- Install and open Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the S22 to the computer with a USB cable.
- Choose Backup in Smart Switch and select the content to include, following the app’s prompts.
- When you need the copy, connect the receiving Galaxy and choose Restore in Smart Switch.
Check that the computer recognizes the phone and that the backup process completes before disconnecting. A computer copy provides a local recovery route, but it is still important to verify the selected content and keep access to the computer where the copy is stored.

- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
Back up supported data with Samsung Cloud
Samsung Cloud can back up supported Galaxy data and settings. Samsung’s Singapore support guide lists examples such as call and message history; contacts and calendars saved on the device; clock data; settings; home-screen layout; app installation files and Samsung app settings; and voice recordings. The categories available on an individual S22 can vary with country, carrier, phone, and operating system, so use the list shown on the phone rather than assuming every category is covered.

For a restore, open Samsung Cloud, choose Restore data, select the backup and categories, then follow the prompts. Samsung says automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, its screen to be off, and Wi-Fi to be connected.

Samsung’s Singapore guide, last updated 2024-03-26, states that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up in the Samsung Cloud context described on that page. This is a Singapore-page limit, not a guarantee about current behavior everywhere; check the limits and categories displayed in your local Samsung Cloud app.
Use Google One for a setup-time restore
Samsung’s Google One instructions describe restoring during initial setup of a reset or new Galaxy. Before resetting the S22, verify that a recent backup is available under the Google account you plan to use. Samsung notes that restore options depend on the Galaxy model and Android version; a backup from a newer phone software version cannot be restored to an earlier version.

- Select the available backup and choose the apps and data to restore.
- Continue through setup and allow the selected content to restore.
The exact choices shown depend on the device and software. Samsung’s Google One support instructions describe the setup restore path and version caveat.
Use OneDrive for selected files, not as a full phone backup
OneDrive is a synchronization option for selected data, such as photos or files, rather than a complete restorable image of the S22. Check the Gallery and OneDrive settings to see which folders or categories are selected, then sign in to the destination account and verify that the expected files are present. Do not remove local copies until you have confirmed the synced files can be accessed from that account. Samsung includes OneDrive in its overview of backup and synchronization methods.

Verify the backup before a reset, repair, or phone change
- Check completion: Look for a finished backup and its completion time, not just an enabled setting.
- Check contents: Confirm the data categories selected and, for synced files, open the destination account to verify the files are there.
- Keep account access: Make sure you can sign in to the Samsung or Google account used for the backup.
- Know the restore route: Identify the Smart Switch computer or storage device, or the setup screen and account needed for a cloud restore.
- Account for compatibility: Available categories and restore behavior can depend on region, carrier, phone, and software version.
For repair, Samsung advises backing up and deleting data from the phone to protect personal information. If you cannot delete the data, Samsung recommends enabling Maintenance mode. See its repair and backup guidance for the options it describes.
