On some Samsung refrigerator models, “rd” indicates a manual or forced defrost of the fresh-food compartment—not necessarily a fault. That meaning is documented for specific model families, so the letters alone do not identify a problem or tell you how to exit the mode. If RD appeared unexpectedly, check your exact model and avoid improvised resets.
What RD means on some Samsung refrigerators
Model-specific Samsung service references describe “rd” as a manual or forced defrost of the refrigerator compartment. In the RF195/RF217 service reference, the sequence can move from refrigerator-compartment defrost (“rd”) to a broader defrost of the fresh-food and freezer compartments (“Fd”). The RF28HDEDBSR service-manual excerpt also describes “rd” as forced refrigerator defrost and identifies “Fd” as the next mode. Is RD an error code?
Samsung’s current US and Canadian consumer guides list selected refrigerator codes but do not define RD. Samsung Canada notes that its list does not cover every code, and Samsung US directs users with other codes to its Support Center. So RD is not established as a common consumer fault code in those guides; its appearance after entering a service or test sequence is consistent with the defrost-mode meaning in the cited model-specific references. If RD appears during ordinary use, the available guidance does not establish the cause for your particular refrigerator. Do not infer a failed damper, sensor, heater, fan, or control board from those letters alone.

What to do when RD appears
- Record the model and display. Find the full model number on the refrigerator label. Note exactly what appears on each display area, if there is more than one, and what happened immediately beforehand, including button presses or a power interruption.
- If you deliberately entered a test or service mode, use that model’s instructions. Consult the refrigerator’s own manual for how to leave or complete the mode. Do not use button combinations from another Samsung model; documented procedures vary by family and control layout. iFixit’s model-specific 2021 French-door guide.
- If RD appeared unexpectedly, do not try random resets. Samsung’s US guidance says, “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator.” It also cautions against interacting with the panel just to make an error disappear unless instructed. - Check Self Check if your refrigerator has Family Hub. Samsung US lists this path for current or past codes: Apps > Fridge Manager > Fridge Settings > Self Check > Start. Samsung US refrigerator error codes.
- Contact support if the display persists or cooling is affected. Give Samsung the full model number, the exact display, and the circumstances in which RD appeared. Samsung’s consumer guidance directs users with unlisted codes to its Support Center.
Why the model number matters
RD has a specific defrost-mode meaning in the RF195/RF217 and RF28HDEDBSR materials, but those sources do not establish one universal button sequence or explanation for every Samsung refrigerator. The key distinction is whether RD appeared after a deliberate model-specific service sequence or unexpectedly during normal use. If you do not know which applies, identify the model and ask Samsung Support rather than treating RD alone as a diagnosis.
