To keep a Samsung app from being cleared with Close all, open Recents, tap the app’s icon, then choose Keep open. To reverse it, repeat those steps and choose Stop keeping open. This keeps the app running in the background; it does not password-lock or hide the app.
Keep a Samsung app open from Recents
- Open Recents. Tap the Recents button if you use navigation buttons, or use your device’s Recents gesture.
- Find the app card and tap its app icon. Tap the icon rather than holding or dragging it, which may trigger a different multitasking action.
- Choose Keep open.
Samsung’s instructions for managing Recent apps describe this as keeping the app running in the background. Recents is also where you can swipe away individual app cards or choose Close all.

Stop keeping the app open
Return to Recents, tap the app’s icon, then choose Stop keeping open. This removes the Keep open setting for that app.
Keep open is not app pinning
The word “lock” can refer to two different goals. Use Keep open when you want an app to remain running while you clear Recents. Use app pinning when you want to prevent someone from accidentally leaving one app on screen. Samsung’s app-pinning instructions explain that unpinning can require the device’s screen-lock credential if that option is enabled.

If “Keep open” is missing
Samsung notes that available screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and wireless provider. First check the menu that appears when you tap the app icon on its Recents card. If the option is not there, consult Samsung’s current guidance for your model and software version; there is no single alternate setting established for every Galaxy device. Samsung’s Multi window and App pairs guidance covers related multitasking features, but those are not a universal substitute for Keep open.
