What QLED, Neo QLED, and OLED mean
Samsung QLED is an LCD television with an LED backlight and quantum dots that enhance colour and brightness. Because it relies on a backlight, its dark-scene performance depends partly on how the set dims that light. Samsung describes the technology in its QLED, OLED, and Neo QLED guide.

Neo QLED is Samsung’s QLED family that uses smaller Quantum Mini LEDs for finer backlight control. It is not another name for every QLED TV: ordinary QLED and Neo QLED models can differ in their dimming hardware and features.

Samsung’s 2026 lineup includes both quantum-dot-based self-emissive QD-OLED models and white-OLED models, according to its 2026 first-quarter interim report. “Samsung OLED” therefore does not mean every size or tier uses the same panel implementation.

Picture quality: black levels, brightness, and viewing angle
Black levels and dark scenes
OLED has a structural advantage for black: an individual pixel can turn off rather than relying on a dimmed backlight. That produces true black and helps dark scenes retain contrast. QLED sets must manage light from behind the screen; Neo QLED’s Mini LED backlight can offer finer control than conventional backlighting, but results depend on the particular model and its dimming implementation.
Bright rooms and HDR
Samsung positions LED-backlit TVs, particularly Neo QLED, for high brightness and HDR highlights. That is a useful tendency, not a rule that every QLED beats every OLED: brightness varies by model, and Samsung also markets brighter OLED models. Glare and reflections can affect daytime viewing as much as peak brightness, so consider the screen’s reflection handling alongside the room’s lighting. Samsung’s May 15, 2026 UK lineup announcement describes expanded Glare Free options, but does not establish a same-condition brightness comparison between QLED and OLED models.

Samsung says OLED retains image quality across wider viewing angles, while LED picture quality tends to diminish when viewed off-axis. Some Neo QLED models add viewing-angle features, so check the individual set if several people will watch from seats spread across the room.

Price: compare equivalent models, not technology labels
Price depends on model tier, screen size, generation, retailer, and promotion; there is no dependable across-the-board OLED premium. For a narrow US-market illustration, Samsung’s 2026 listings showed these prices:
| Samsung model | Size | Samsung US listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Neo QLED QN70H | 55 inches | $899.99 |
| OLED S90H | 55 inches | $1,999.99 |
These are specific Samsung US listings, not a market survey or a like-for-like test: the QN70H and S90H are different model tiers. Prices and promotions change, so check current local listings and compare sets from the same generation, at the same size, and in a similar feature tier. Samsung’s 2026 OLED announcement lists OLED launch prices by model and size, but does not provide a matched QLED comparison.

Both technology families include models with gaming features such as high refresh rates and variable refresh rate support, but the label alone does not tell you what a specific TV offers. Compare the model’s stated refresh rate, VRR support, input lag, HDR performance, and glare handling for your console or PC.

Static on-screen elements are a consideration with OLED. Samsung’s UK buying guide says its QLED range carries a 10-year screen-burn warranty, subject to terms and registration within 90 days. This is a UK-specific offer; it should not be assumed to apply in other countries. Check the warranty and registration terms for the exact model and market.
Quick Recap
How to choose between Samsung QLED and OLED
- Pick OLED when: you watch many films or shows in a dim room, value pixel-level black, or have viewers seated at wide angles.
- Consider Neo QLED when: the room is bright, HDR highlights are a priority, or you want a Mini LED backlight with finer control than conventional QLED.
- Compare the exact TV when: gaming features, reflections, price, or screen-care terms will determine your decision. Check specifications and credible model-specific testing rather than assuming a technology-wide winner.
