You cannot confirm a Samsung product is genuine with an IMEI, serial number or any other at-home check alone. Use several independent clues—device identifiers, software, physical details and purchase context—and ask a local Samsung Authorized Service Center to inspect it if anything conflicts. Samsung Colombia explicitly cautions that self-checks are not infallible; its guidance applies to products bought in Colombia, so buyers elsewhere should consult their local Samsung support channel.
What an at-home check can—and cannot—tell you
An IMEI match is useful evidence, but it is not proof. Samsung Colombia says that some counterfeits may carry a genuine IMEI, so a matching number cannot authenticate a phone by itself. The same caution applies to a model number, serial number, packaging, software feature or seller claim: consider them together rather than treating any single clue as conclusive.

Samsung’s Colombia support guide describes several indicators to examine, including the menus, materials, weight, camera and display expected for the specific model; interface translation and account setup; and the availability of Samsung services. These checks can raise or lower your confidence, but Samsung says a complete review by an Authorized Service Center is the route to confirmation. That article is specifically for products purchased in Colombia.

Check the product before you buy it
Confirm the exact model and expected features
Compare the listing’s precise model with Samsung’s own product information for the relevant market. Check that the advertised design, menu layout and features make sense for that model. If possible, handle the same model in an established retail shop and compare its materials, weight, camera and display with the device being offered. A similar-looking device or a familiar product name is not enough to establish that the item is genuine.

Assess the seller and offer
Samsung Colombia identifies an unusually low price, evasive answers to specific questions, a doubtful seller, or an offer for a supposedly latest model before its official launch as warning signs. None proves a counterfeit on its own, but several together justify walking away or seeking more evidence. Samsung advises buying through its own website or established retail chains.
Inspect software clues when available
If you can access the device, check Google Play Store settings for Play Protect certification. Samsung Colombia says an authentic device will show “El dispositivo está certificado” (“Device is certified”). Treat certification as one software clue, not a stand-alone guarantee. You can also check whether Samsung Members is available and whether a Samsung account can be added without errors; these are indicators, not definitive authentication tests.

Check a device you already own
- Open the device information page. On a Galaxy phone, go to Settings > About phone; on a Galaxy tablet, go to Settings > About tablet. Samsung notes that menu names can vary by model, software and carrier.
- Record the identifiers. Note the model number, serial number and, if the device supports it, IMEI. You may also find these details in Samsung Members, on the original packaging, in sales documents or in some carrier accounts. The code
*#06#displays an IMEI only where supported by the carrier. - Compare independent records. Where available, compare the on-device details with the box, receipt, sales contract or carrier account. Agreement is helpful, but it does not prove authenticity: identifiers can be copied or misrepresented.
- Compare the device with the exact model. Check its menus, interface translation, materials, weight, camera and screen against reliable information for that model. Look for Samsung services and account setup as additional clues.
- Escalate conflicting clues. If an identifier does not match, expected features are missing, or other signs remain suspicious, contact Samsung support in your country and ask where an authorized technician can examine the product.
Do not remove a sealed or integrated battery to look for an identifier. Samsung’s regional support pages provide other ways to find device details, and Samsung UK warns that trying to remove a non-removable battery can damage the device and void its warranty.
Where to find model, serial and IMEI details by product
A model number identifies a model family; a serial number identifies an individual item. An IMEI is an identifier for mobile devices that support it. Locations and available identifiers depend on the product and model. The paths below reflect Samsung support guidance for particular regions, so consult the local support site or product manual if yours differs.

Take the device to a Samsung Authorized Service Center if the IMEI or other identifiers disagree with the box or sales records, the software or features do not fit the advertised model, or the seller and purchase circumstances remain doubtful. Samsung Colombia says an authorized specialist can confirm authenticity through a complete hardware and software review. Since that guidance is scoped to Colombia, use the support site for your country to locate the appropriate service channel and confirm what inspection options are available locally.
