On most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > General management > Date and time. Turn on Automatic time zone to let the phone detect the zone where available, or turn off automatic settings and select a zone yourself. Menu labels and detection options can vary by model, software version, and market.
Choose automatic or manual time-zone settings
Automatic time zone is convenient when you travel: the phone can update its zone from network or location signals, depending on the device and settings. Manual selection gives you direct control, but you may need to choose a new zone after traveling. The automatic date-and-time control is separate: it sets the clock and date, while automatic time zone sets the zone.

Samsung says connected Galaxy devices can receive date, time, and time-zone settings from network settings. Its guidance describes connection methods differently across regional support pages, so the exact detection method is not the same for every phone or carrier. Samsung’s date-and-time instructions and Samsung Canada’s guidance, updated January 8, 2026 explain the settings.
Set the time zone automatically
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Date and time.
- Turn on Automatic time zone. Leave Automatic date and time on as well if you want the network to set the clock and date.
- If your phone shows Set time zone based on location, enable it when you want location to help detect the zone.
Location-based detection depends on device support. Android notes that some devices can use location to set the time zone, while others cannot; see Google’s Android time and date help.

Choose a time zone manually
- Go to Settings > General management > Date and time.
- Turn off Automatic date and time and Automatic time zone if those controls are present. Samsung says manual controls appear after automatic settings are disabled.
- Tap Select time zone and choose the correct region and zone. On some versions, the control may be labeled Time zone.
Select the zone that matches the local time you want the phone to follow. A manually selected zone can still apply its daylight-saving changes: choosing a zone selects its time rules, rather than permanently freezing the clock offset.
Change the clock to 24-hour format
To change only how the time appears, open Settings > General management > Date and time and enable Use 24-hour format. This display preference works whether the phone sets time automatically or you set it manually.

Fix common time-zone problems
Manual controls are missing
Check whether Automatic date and time or Automatic time zone is still on. Samsung says automatic mode hides manual date and time controls. Turn off the relevant automatic setting to reveal available manual options.
The phone does not update after travel
Check the network connection and confirm automatic settings are enabled. A carrier issue, movement between zones, or lack of internet access can prevent an update. If needed, set the correct time temporarily; Samsung advises turning automatic date and time back on after service returns. The menu path or options differ
Samsung says screens and settings can vary by market. Search Settings for Date and time, or consult the manual for your exact model and region. Android’s location-based option is not available on every device. Samsung’s examples of discontinued automatic time-zone support concern specific older Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab models, not Galaxy phones; they should not be taken as evidence of a phone limitation. Apps, websites, or calendar alerts behave incorrectly
Check that both the date and time are accurate, not just the time zone. Samsung warns that inaccurate date or time can cause apps and websites to work incorrectly or show security warnings, and can affect calendar notifications.
