Carbon-14 left behind by mid-20th-century nuclear testing can reveal when the plant fibers in a painting’s canvas or paper formed. If that support dates to after the artist’s death, it is a serious anachronism—but radiocarbon dating alone does not identify the painter or settle every question about an artwork’s history.
How nuclear tests created a dating marker
Carbon-14 occurs naturally in the atmosphere, and growing plants absorb atmospheric carbon. Above-ground nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and early 1960s sharply increased atmospheric carbon-14, creating what is known as the bomb pulse or bomb peak. That excess entered plants and can remain measurable in materials made from them, including cotton canvas, paper, parchment, and textiles.

Researchers use accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) to measure the carbon-isotope ratio in a small organic sample, then compare it with an appropriate post-bomb calibration record. The result constrains the age of the sampled plant material; it does not directly date when an artist applied paint. The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute lists cloth, paper, leather, well-preserved wood, charcoal, peat, shell, and bone among suitable radiocarbon samples. It also notes that the method is not applicable to samples older than about 50,000 years, when too little carbon-14 remains for accurate measurement. If a support’s plant fibers formed decades after the artist died, that support could not have been used for a painting made by the artist during their lifetime. It is strong evidence that the claimed chronology does not fit the sampled material. But it is not, by itself, proof of who painted the work: a support may have been reused, a work may have been restored, and the sample’s history must be considered.

In a 2022 forensic study, researchers used AMS and the post-bomb calibration curve to examine canvas fibers from two paintings attributed to Impressionist and Pointillist artists. The fibers indicated manufacture in 1956–1957 or, more likely, after 2000—too late for artists who died in the 1940s. The result challenged the attributions through the age of the canvas, rather than identifying the person who painted on it. Beck and colleagues, Forensic Science International, 2022
What documented art-forgery studies found
Two paintings on canvas
The 2022 study found canvas fibers dating to 1956–1957 or, more likely, after 2000. Both ranges postdate the alleged artists’ deaths in the 1940s, making the attributed lifetime chronology untenable for those supports. Study abstract and publication details

Suspected T’ang Haywen works on paper
A 2019 study dated paper from 14 suspected forged paintings to 2008–2011. By comparison, seven works considered legitimate were consistent with the artist’s use of Arches cotton paper beginning in the early 1980s. The contrast helped establish whether the paper fit the proposed chronology; it did not make the isotope measurement a standalone authorship test. 2019 study in Radiocarbon
A comparison across laboratories and materials
A 2022 paper reported a comparison by three AMS laboratories using modern cotton paper, two antique paper sheets, parchment, and textile. The laboratories’ results agreed, and the authors describe bomb-peak radiocarbon as evidence of post-1950 material. This supports the method’s use on suitable organic supports; it does not remove the need to assess the sample and its context. Study in Forensic Science International, 2022

Why a canvas date is not automatically a painting date
Plant fibers may be harvested, processed into canvas, stored, and only later used by an artist. A 2018 study of modern Scandinavian paintings found that most post-bomb samples indicated a two-to-five-year interval between harvesting the plant fibers and completion of the painting; some indicated lags of up to 10 years. These observations show why a measured fiber age should not be casually reported as the exact year a painting was made. Brock and colleagues, Radiocarbon, 2018
Supports can also be stored, reused, or reworked. An old canvas does not guarantee that the painting on it is old, just as a recent canvas can rule out some earlier attributions without identifying an alternative artist. The interpretation depends on what was sampled and how the sample relates to the work.

What can distort or limit the result?
- Material choice: The inference depends on carbon-bearing organic material such as plant fibers. Synthetic fibers do not provide the same plant-growth signal.
- Contamination: Foreign carbon can affect a measurement, so screening and sample preparation matter.
- Calibration: The result must be compared with an appropriate calibration curve; post-bomb material requires the relevant atmospheric record.
- Sampling context: A result dates the sampled material, not necessarily every layer or component of a complex, restored, or reused artwork.
These constraints are discussed in the 2018 study of modern paintings, which emphasizes screening for synthetic fibers and contaminants and selecting an appropriate calibration curve. Brock and colleagues, Radiocarbon, 2018
How radiocarbon fits into an authenticity investigation
Radiocarbon answers a chronology question about the carbon-bearing sample. Other analytical methods can examine elemental or molecular composition and help identify materials. Those approaches are complementary: a material analysis may characterize what is present, while radiocarbon can constrain when suitable organic material formed. Neither should be treated as an interchangeable, all-purpose authenticity verdict.
