If you changed your Samsung Galaxy pattern within the last 72 hours, first try Samsung’s previous-lock recovery. On eligible phones running One UI 6.1 or later, the phone may let you unlock with the pattern you used before—without erasing local data. If that option is unavailable or the old pattern is not accepted, the supported fallback is a factory reset, which deletes data stored on the phone and may require the Google account previously registered on it during setup.
Can you unlock a Samsung Galaxy with the previous pattern?
Samsung’s previous-screen-lock recovery is the only route in these instructions that can avoid a factory reset. It applies to eligible Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later when the lock was changed within the previous 72 hours and the former credential was not deleted. Samsung India says the recovery option can appear after five or more unsuccessful attempts at the current lock screen; its instructions call the option “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern.” Wording and screens can vary by software and region. Samsung India’s instructions were updated July 10, 2026.

- Enter an incorrect pattern at least five times, until the forgotten-lock option appears, if your device presents it this way.
- Choose “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” or the equivalent prompt, then enter the previous pattern.
- If it is accepted, follow the on-screen steps to set a new lock.
Samsung says there are only three attempts to enter the previous credential in this recovery flow. Take care not to guess: three incorrect entries end further attempts through this option. Samsung UK also specifies that “Delete previous PIN now” must not have been selected when the new lock was set. See Samsung UK’s instructions, updated August 4, 2026.
When should you choose a factory reset?
Consider a reset only if previous-lock recovery does not apply or fails, and you accept losing files and other personal information stored locally on the phone. Samsung describes a factory reset as restoring factory settings and removing personal data. It is not a way to unlock the device while keeping unbacked photos or files. The cited Samsung guidance does not establish a way to retrieve unbacked local data from a locked phone after a reset, so stop if preserving that data is essential.

Before proceeding, make sure you can sign in to the Google account previously used on the phone and, where relevant, the Samsung account associated with it. Resetting outside the phone’s Settings may activate Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which can require the previously registered Google account before setup can continue. Samsung also notes that some reset flows may ask for Samsung account credentials. These checks protect device ownership; a reset does not bypass them. Samsung’s US factory-reset guidance explains the data loss and account-verification implications.

Reset through Android Recovery
Samsung documents using device buttons to reach Android Recovery and reset a locked phone. The button combination depends on the model, so follow Samsung’s instructions for your exact device rather than relying on a sequence intended for another Galaxy. This method erases local data and may lead to Google ownership verification during setup. Samsung’s US factory-reset page describes the reset options and cautions that personal data is removed.

Erase remotely with Samsung’s find service
Remote erase works only if the device and accounts were configured for it before the lockout. Samsung’s US guidance lists these conditions: the phone must be powered on, connected to a stable network, signed in to a Samsung account, and have remote controls enabled. Samsung France’s instructions for SmartThings Find and Samsung Find also identify prior lost-device tracking setup, internet access, and location permissions as relevant conditions. Availability and exact requirements can vary with region and software. If the phone is offline or the required controls were not enabled, remote erase may not be available. This action deletes the phone’s data; it does not preserve files or remove ownership verification. See Samsung US support and Samsung France’s reset instructions.

A reset from Settings is a standard option when you can unlock and navigate the phone, but it cannot help when the forgotten pattern prevents access to Settings. Samsung’s US reset guidance covers this route as well as other methods.

What happens after the reset?
During setup, a phone reset outside Settings may ask for the Google account previously registered on the device. Enter the correct account details to complete ownership verification; the reset itself does not remove that requirement. Some flows may also require Samsung account credentials. If you cannot complete verification, Samsung directs users to contact support or seek service assistance. The available service options depend on your region.

| Situation | Best-supported next step | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible One UI 6.1+ device; lock changed within 72 hours; previous pattern retained and known | Try the previous-lock recovery prompt | Can avoid factory-reset data loss |
| Previous-lock recovery is unavailable, or the prior pattern is unknown or rejected | Use Android Recovery or a configured remote-erase option if you accept a reset | Local data is erased |
| Keeping local, unbacked-up data is essential | Do not reset; contact Samsung support for guidance | Reset would delete local data; recovery of unbacked files is not established by the cited guidance |
| Reset is complete, but Google or Samsung account verification cannot be completed | Contact Samsung support or an authorized service center | Verification is an ownership requirement, not a lock to bypass |
