If a Bluetooth accessory works with other phones but not yours, test both sides before assuming the phone is broken: try the accessory with another phone or computer, then try your phone with another Bluetooth device. That comparison helps narrow the problem to the accessory, the phone, or a compatibility or settings issue. It is a clue—not proof of hardware failure.
First identify what is failing
“Bluetooth problem” can mean several different things. Note which one matches your situation, because the next checks depend on it:

- The phone cannot find the accessory: check that the accessory is powered on and in discovery or pairing mode.
- The phone sees it but pairing fails: remove stale pairing records on both sides and try pairing again.
- It connects, then drops: check charge, distance, updates and whether the issue happens with other accessories.
- It pairs but calls or music do not work: check compatibility and the relevant audio settings rather than repeating pairing steps.
Use a cross-test to narrow down the cause
Run both comparisons if you can. Fairphone recommends testing the accessory with another phone and testing the affected phone with another Bluetooth device. Fairphone’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide notes that a successful connection to another device may indicate that the original accessory is incompatible.

- The accessory fails with more than one phone or computer: focus on its power, pairing instructions, firmware, compatibility or manufacturer support.
- Your phone fails with several known-working Bluetooth accessories: focus on the phone’s settings and software; contact its manufacturer if the basic checks below do not help.
- Both work in other combinations: look for a compatibility issue, an old pairing record or a feature-specific setting.
These tests point toward where to investigate; they cannot establish a hardware defect on their own.

Try the low-risk connection checks
- Bring the devices close together. Keep them near each other while pairing and troubleshooting. Samsung says most Bluetooth devices need to be within 30 feet, but the actual range depends on the devices and conditions; closer is a better starting point.
- Check power and discovery mode. Charge or power on the accessory and follow its instructions to make it discoverable. An accessory that is on but not in pairing mode may not appear in the phone’s device list.
- Refresh Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off and back on on the phone, then restart both the phone and accessory.
- Check any companion app and its permission. On iPhone or iPad, an accessory app may need Bluetooth permission. On Samsung devices, check whether the accessory requires a support app and whether permissions or restrictions prevent it from working.
For iPhone and iPad, Apple’s Bluetooth accessory connection guidance also recommends checking charge, distance, discovery mode, app permission and compatibility with the accessory maker.
Forget the old pairing and pair again
A saved pairing can become stale. Remove the accessory from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, put the accessory back into pairing mode, and follow its pairing instructions again. Menu labels vary by phone and operating-system version.

- On Android: remove or forget the saved device in Bluetooth settings, then pair it again. For a car, delete old phone entries from the car as well as the phone, and follow the car manual’s instructions about which side should start pairing.
- On iPhone or iPad: unpair the accessory, put it into discovery mode, and pair again. If it pairs with other devices but not the iPhone or iPad, Apple advises unpairing it from those other devices before retrying.

Bluetooth support alone does not guarantee that every feature will work. The phone and accessory need to support the relevant functions or profiles, and some accessories need a companion app. Check the exact phone and accessory requirements with their manufacturers.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
On Android, if the accessory is paired but calls or music fail, open its Bluetooth device settings and check the separate Phone audio and Media audio options. Enable the one that matches the feature you need. Wording and menu locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. Also check whether another paired device is handling the call or audio.
Compatibility can be feature-specific: Xiaomi notes, for example, that a headset may support calls without supporting music, while some mice, keyboards and game controllers require HID support or particular system requirements. Google also cautions that not all cars can make or receive phone calls over Bluetooth.

Update software before considering a reset
Install available updates for the phone, and check whether the accessory has a firmware update. If the issue began after installing an app, or persists across accessories, the phone manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance may offer model-specific steps. Samsung suggests Safe mode as a later diagnostic step because it can help identify whether a downloaded app is interfering with connectivity.

Know when to contact support
- Contact the accessory maker if that accessory fails with multiple phones or computers, or if its pairing mode, compatibility or firmware is unclear.
- Contact the phone manufacturer if Bluetooth cannot be enabled, or your phone cannot connect to multiple known-working accessories after the basic checks and updates.
- Give support useful details: the phone model and operating-system version, accessory model, exact symptom, any error message, and results of the two cross-tests.
If you use Fairphone’s reset instructions, note their stated scope: they apply to Android 13 or later, and their menu steps should not be assumed to match every Android phone.
