It is the official Galaxy launcher and already provides Samsung’s Home and Apps screens, full-screen gestures and a layout-lock option. A third-party launcher makes sense when a documented feature—such as Microsoft Launcher’s feed or layout import—solves a problem you actually have. Because Android and manufacturers handle default launchers differently, verify the setting on your exact Galaxy model and software version before switching.
What a launcher controls
A launcher is the system app that draws the home screen, app list, icons, widgets and related navigation surfaces. Android normally uses one launcher as the default at a time. Replacing it changes the way you reach apps and organize the phone; it does not replace Android itself, your Samsung account or your installed applications.

The practical choice is therefore not “Samsung versus Android.” It is whether Samsung’s existing home experience meets your needs or whether another launcher’s layout and workflow are worth the setup and compatibility variables.

What Samsung One UI Home offers
Samsung’s official Galaxy home experience
Samsung describes One UI Home in its official Google Play listing as the official Samsung launcher for Galaxy. The listing highlights neatly arranged icons and separate Home and Apps screens, so the basic model is familiar to anyone using a Galaxy phone: place shortcuts and widgets on Home, then open Apps to browse the full application list.
Samsung also lists full-screen gestures and a setting that locks the home layout. The lock prevents accidental movement of icons and widgets after you have arranged the screen. For someone who mainly wants a predictable Galaxy layout, those built-in controls may be enough reason not to add another app.
How current is the published feature description?
The listing says the described features require Android 9.0 Pie or later and warns that availability can differ by device or operating-system version. Its displayed update date is September 5, 2019. Treat that page as a baseline description of One UI Home, not a complete inventory of every feature in a current One UI release. Your phone’s installed version and Samsung’s own menus take precedence.

Conversely, a newer One UI build may contain options that the listing does not mention. Check the menus on the phone you actually use before deciding that a third-party app is necessary.
What a third-party launcher changes
A replacement launcher can present a different home-screen layout, app-drawer behavior, search surface, widget arrangement or information feed. The exact result depends on the individual app; there is no single “third-party launcher” feature set. Evaluate a named launcher’s current documentation rather than assuming that a capability advertised by one app exists in all alternatives.
Third-party software also introduces another default-app relationship. If Android stops treating the replacement as the Home app, the phone can fall back to One UI Home until you select the replacement again. That possibility matters more than a theoretical list of customization options if you want a consistent daily workflow.
The useful question is therefore specific: “Does this launcher provide the layout or workflow I want on my phone?” A vague desire for “more customization” is harder to evaluate than a concrete requirement such as an information feed, an imported arrangement or a different way to browse apps.

Microsoft Launcher as a concrete example
Documented features
Microsoft describes Microsoft Launcher as customizable and says its personalized feed can show calendar items, to-do lists and Sticky Notes. During setup you can either start from a fresh arrangement or import a previous home-screen layout. Microsoft lists Android 7.0 or later as the requirement.
These are Microsoft Launcher capabilities, not a claim about every alternative. The available evidence does not establish equivalent, current feature documentation for other named launchers, so compare each candidate on its own published requirements and feature list.
Layout import can reduce the effort of rebuilding a familiar arrangement, but it does not make every launcher interchangeable. An imported layout still needs to be checked on the new Home app, especially after you change the default and test widgets, the Apps screen and your normal navigation gesture.
Important expectation about PC integration
Microsoft explicitly says the launcher does not reproduce your PC home screen. Its feed can surface selected information, but installing it should not be understood as cloning the Windows desktop or its arrangement on your Galaxy phone.

One launcher at a time
Microsoft’s support guidance says installing the app replaces the default launcher while the previous launcher remains accessible. Android uses one launcher at a time and does not provide an easy in-place toggle between them. To return to One UI Home, you normally change the Home app in Android’s default-app settings rather than switching with a quick button inside the launcher.
That arrangement is reversible, but it is not frictionless. Keep the old launcher available while you evaluate the new one, and learn the return path before making extensive changes. The ability to go back is part of a safe comparison, not an indication that both launchers run as equal defaults simultaneously.
One UI Home and third-party launchers compared
| Decision area | One UI Home | Third-party option |
|---|---|---|
| Home and app screens | Samsung’s familiar Galaxy Home and Apps screens. | A replacement experience whose screens and app-drawer behavior depend on the chosen app. |
| Customization and workflow | Samsung’s documented full-screen gestures and home-layout lock, with features varying by device and OS. | May add a distinct layout, feed or workflow; verify the specific app’s documentation. |
| Minimum version in the cited documentation | Samsung’s listing describes the stated features for Android 9.0 Pie or later. | Microsoft Launcher lists Android 7.0 or later; other launchers can set different requirements. |
| Layout migration | Remains in place when you do not replace the launcher. | Microsoft Launcher supports starting fresh or importing a prior layout; support differs by app. |
| Default-app behavior | Already the Galaxy launcher and usually the fallback when a replacement is removed or deselected. | Must be selected as the Home app; Android and manufacturer software can reverse or restrict that selection. |
| PC-home-screen replication | Not applicable. | Microsoft says its launcher does not replicate the user’s PC home screen. |
| Setup effort | No launcher change is required; your existing arrangement stays in place. | Requires installation, first-run choices, default-app selection and a test of the resulting layout. |
The reviewed documentation does not establish a reliable ranking for speed, battery consumption, privacy or gesture smoothness. Those outcomes can depend on the phone, One UI build, launcher version, widgets and settings, so do not treat them as settled advantages without device-specific testing.
Ratings and review counts in an app store are not a fair substitute for that testing. They may reflect many phone models and unrelated use cases. A launcher that works well for one Galaxy owner can still be a poor fit if its default selection is unreliable on another software build.

Choose One UI Home when these statements fit
- You are comfortable with Samsung’s Home and Apps screens.
- You want the least disruptive setup on a Galaxy phone.
- You do not need a particular feed, layout-import function or other documented replacement feature.
- You prefer to avoid troubleshooting a default-home selection that could change after an update or reboot.
- You want Samsung’s documented full-screen gesture support and home-layout lock without evaluating another app.
Staying with One UI Home is not a failure to customize. It is the sensible default when the built-in workflow already does what you need. It also gives you a clear baseline: if you later try a replacement, you can compare it against the arrangement and behavior you already know.
Try a third-party launcher when you have a concrete goal
- You want a different arrangement of Home and Apps screens than Samsung provides.
- You need a documented workflow feature, such as Microsoft Launcher’s calendar, to-do and Sticky Notes feed.
- You are moving from another launcher and the candidate can import the layout you want to preserve.
- You have checked the launcher’s Android requirement and confirmed that your Galaxy can keep it selected as the Home app.
- You are willing to test the result after a reboot or software update rather than assuming the first successful selection will always persist.
Start with the smallest change that solves the problem. A launcher should earn its place by improving a specific daily task, not merely by offering a longer list of settings. If the only motivation is a claim that an alternative is universally faster, smoother or more private, the documented facts do not justify treating that claim as settled.
How to switch safely on a Galaxy phone
Labels differ between Samsung models, One UI releases and Android versions. Google’s Android Help also warns that home-screen steps vary by device. Use the following sequence as a map, then follow the labels shown on your phone.
- Check compatibility. Read the candidate launcher’s current requirements. For the documented Microsoft example, the requirement is Android 7.0 or later. Confirm your Galaxy’s Android version under Settings > About phone > Software information, or the equivalent path on your build.
- Identify your fallback. Confirm that One UI Home is still installed and note where your phone lists the Home app. This avoids having to search for the return path after setup.
- Install the launcher from its official app listing. Review the app’s setup notes and permissions before opening it. Do not assume that another launcher supports Microsoft Launcher’s import or feed features.
- Open the launcher and complete its first-run choices. If offered, choose whether to start fresh or import a prior layout. Record any home-screen arrangement you may want to recreate before making major changes.
- Set it as the Home app. If Android does not display a prompt, open Settings and search for Default apps, then choose Home app (the exact wording can vary) and select the new launcher. Microsoft’s support guidance specifically recommends using the phone’s default-app settings when no prompt appears.
- Press Home and test the essentials. Check that Home opens the intended launcher, the Apps screen appears as expected, widgets load, and your normal gesture or navigation mode still reaches Home.
- Restart once during evaluation. A reported Samsung troubleshooting case involves the default home screen reverting; checking after a reboot helps reveal whether your phone keeps the selection. This is a practical test, not proof that every Galaxy has the issue.
- Keep One UI Home available while evaluating. Installing a replacement does not erase the old launcher. Leave it installed until you are confident that the new arrangement works and you know how to return.
How to return to One UI Home
- Open Settings and find Default apps (you can use Settings search if the menu is organized differently).
- Open Home app and select One UI Home.
- Press the Home button or use your Home gesture to confirm that Samsung’s launcher opens.
If the replacement launcher has been uninstalled, Android should normally fall back to One UI Home, but manually selecting it is clearer when troubleshooting. If the menu names differ, search Settings for “Home app” or “default launcher” and use the result supplied by your software build.
When the default launcher will not stay selected
Re-select the Home app
A reported Samsung issue in Niagara’s December 16, 2025 troubleshooting article describes the default home screen reverting and recommends manually selecting the desired launcher again in system settings, followed by a reboot if necessary. That is a time-sensitive vendor-support report, not proof that every Galaxy phone has the same defect. Apply the fix only if your device exhibits the behavior.
Check for manufacturer or operating-system restrictions
Microsoft notes that some operating-system restrictions can prevent setting a work launcher as default. Separately, Niagara’s June 23, 2025 support article reports that Xiaomi devices running HyperOS 2.0 or later can block third-party defaults through the ordinary path and require an alternative method. The Xiaomi example does not describe Samsung phones, but it illustrates why a procedure that works on one manufacturer cannot be treated as universal.
Do not transfer the Xiaomi workaround to a Galaxy phone automatically. Look for instructions that name your manufacturer, Android version and launcher. A support page for a different brand can establish that manufacturer restrictions exist without telling you the correct Samsung procedure.

Verify after updates and reboots
If the phone returns to One UI Home after a system or launcher update, repeat the Home-app selection and test again. Keep the launcher’s support page and your phone’s software version in mind when deciding whether the inconvenience is acceptable. If repeated reselection becomes part of normal use, the replacement may not be worth its otherwise attractive features.

Will a third-party launcher change my apps?
No launcher choice is a substitute for installing or replacing your applications. The decision changes the home and app-access experience. Your practical task is to verify that the new launcher can display the shortcuts, widgets and app list you use every day.
Can I keep both launchers?
You can leave One UI Home installed while testing another launcher, and Microsoft says the previous launcher remains accessible. Android nevertheless uses one launcher as the active default at a time. Keeping both installed gives you a fallback; it does not create a simultaneous two-launcher mode.
Does Microsoft Launcher copy Windows?
No. Microsoft explicitly says it does not replicate the user’s PC home screen. Its feed can present calendar items, to-do lists and Sticky Notes, but that is different from cloning a Windows desktop layout.
Is there a universal best launcher for Galaxy?
No reliable comparison establishes one. One UI Home is the appropriate choice when Samsung’s screens meet your needs. A third-party option is justified by a specific documented feature and acceptable compatibility on your model. Claims about speed, battery, privacy or gesture smoothness require testing on the exact device and software combination.

What is the real switching cost?
The cost is primarily setup time and the possibility of repeating the default-app selection. You may need to choose a fresh or imported layout, check widgets and navigation, and confirm the choice after a reboot or update. Those steps are manageable, but they are worth considering if Samsung’s current arrangement already works.
A practical decision checklist
- Layout: Is Samsung’s Home-and-Apps arrangement the problem, or are you only looking for a cosmetic change?
- Workflow: Can you name the feature you need, such as a feed or layout import, and does the chosen launcher document it?
- Compatibility: Does your Android version meet the requirement, and does your manufacturer permit a third-party Home app?
- Switching cost: Do you know the path back to One UI Home and can you tolerate reselecting the default if it changes?
- Testing: Have you pressed Home, opened Apps, checked widgets and tested your preferred gesture or navigation mode?
- Evidence: Are you making the choice from the launcher’s current documentation rather than unverified claims about speed, battery, privacy or gestures?
Bottom line
Use One UI Home if Samsung’s built-in Galaxy screens and controls already fit your routine. Choose a third-party launcher only when a specific, documented capability or layout solves a real problem—and confirm the default-home behavior on your exact device before committing. There is no evidence-based universal winner; the right choice is the one that meets your layout and workflow needs without creating compatibility trouble.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is One UI Home required on a Samsung Galaxy phone?
No. It is Samsung’s official Galaxy launcher and the built-in default experience, but Android can use another launcher when the phone permits it and you select that app as the Home app.
Best Value
Which Android versions are mentioned for these launchers?
Samsung’s listing describes its stated One UI Home features for Android 9.0 Pie or later. Microsoft Launcher lists Android 7.0 or later. Always check the current listing because requirements and available features can vary by device and operating-system version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Microsoft Launcher import my old home-screen layout?
Microsoft documents two setup choices: start fresh or import a previous home-screen layout. Import support is a Microsoft Launcher feature, not a guarantee that every third-party launcher can migrate layouts.
Will Microsoft Launcher make my Galaxy look like my Windows PC?
No. Microsoft explicitly says the launcher does not replicate the user’s PC home screen. Its feed can show calendar items, to-do lists and Sticky Notes, but it is not a Windows desktop clone.
How do I switch back to One UI Home?
Open Settings, find Default apps, choose Home app, and select One UI Home. Menu names vary by Samsung model and Android version, so Settings search may be the quickest route.
Why did my phone switch back to One UI Home?
A Niagara troubleshooting article dated December 16, 2025 reports a Samsung case in which the default home screen reverted. Re-select the desired Home app and reboot if needed, but treat this as a potentially time-sensitive issue rather than a universal Galaxy limitation.
Does a third-party launcher improve speed, battery life or privacy?
The documented material does not establish reliable universal differences in speed, battery consumption, privacy or gesture smoothness. Test the specific launcher on your Galaxy instead of relying on general claims.
Can I use two launchers at the same time?
You can keep One UI Home installed while testing another launcher, but Android uses one launcher as the active default at a time. Switching requires changing the Home app in system settings.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Keep One UI Home when Samsung’s built-in layout works for you. Try a third-party launcher only for a specific documented feature or workflow, and verify default-home behavior on your exact Galaxy model and software version.
