The safest way to check an Income Tax Department email, SMS, phone-linked message or website is to ignore the message’s link and open the Department’s e-Filing portal yourself. From there, use the pre-login “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD” service, matching the document’s DIN or its PAN and document details. Do not rely on a logo, sender name, urgent deadline, refund promise or polished page.
The Income Tax Department says it does not request detailed personal information by email, and it does not email asking for PINs, passwords or similar access information for cards, banks or other financial accounts. A suspicious message should not be answered, opened, clicked or copied into a browser; forward it through the Department’s published reporting route instead.

How do I know if an Income Tax Department email is real?
No single visual clue proves that a message is genuine. Phishing websites can imitate legitimate pages closely, including their logos and layout, and a sender display name can be forged. Treat every unexpected message as unverified until you confirm it through a channel you opened independently.
A 5 February 2016 CBDT press release says routine taxpayer communication is often sent by email and SMS. That means the medium itself is neither proof of fraud nor proof of authenticity. The same release and the Department’s current anti-phishing guidance set out the more useful test: whether the message asks for information or action that the Department says it does not seek by email.

Requests the Department says it does not make
- It does not request detailed personal information through email.
- It does not send email requesting PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.
- It does not require you to disclose confidential financial information in response to an unexpected message.
The Department’s live anti-phishing page states: “The Income Tax Department does not send e-mail requesting your PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.” A historical CBDT release used the following wording: “The Income Tax Department NEVER asks for your PIN numbers, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts through e-mail.” The latter is dated guidance from 5 February 2016, not a reason to treat every email as fake.
Clues that are not proof
| Message feature | Why it is not enough | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Income Tax Department logo | Phishing pages can copy familiar branding. | Open the official portal independently and authenticate any document there. |
| Sender display name | Display names and visible sender details can be made to look official. | Do not reply or use links in the message; verify through the portal. |
| Urgent deadline or threat | Pressure is designed to stop you checking the request. | Pause, preserve the message and check for a corresponding official record. |
| Refund promise | A refund offer can be used to obtain credentials or financial details. | Do not enter information from the message. Check independently through e-Filing. |
| Polished website or familiar wording | Imitation sites can closely resemble legitimate ones. | Use a known bookmark or type the Department’s address yourself. |
What is the official Income Tax Department website?
The Department describes its e-Filing site as the official portal of the Income Tax Department under India’s Ministry of Finance and as the single window for income-tax services. Use that portal as your starting point, but reach it without using a link supplied in an unexpected email, SMS or messaging-app notification.
Open it without trusting the message
- Stop before tapping a link or opening an attachment.
- Open a bookmark you created previously for the Department’s portal, or type the official Department address into the browser yourself.
- Check that you are on the Department’s own portal before entering a user ID, password, PAN, mobile number or any other confidential information.
- Navigate from the portal’s menus rather than returning to the original message.
The Department specifically warns against copying and pasting a suspicious link into the browser. Copying changes how you open the link, but it does not make the destination trustworthy. A link can lead to a convincing imitation even when the message appears to use official language.

How can I verify an income tax notice online?
Use the e-Filing portal’s pre-login service labelled “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD.” The service is available to registered and unregistered users, so you do not have to sign in merely to check whether a notice, order, summons, letter or other correspondence was issued by the Department.
Step 1: Pause and keep the message separate
Do not let a refund promise, threat, apparent deadline or familiar personal detail make you act through the message. Leave its browser tab closed. Do not reply, click, open attachments or call a number printed in the message while you are checking it.

Step 2: Start at the portal
Open the official e-Filing portal independently. Select the pre-login “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD” service. You can begin this process without logging in.
Step 3: Choose the lookup route that matches the document
The Department’s user manual describes two input routes. They lead to the same authentication service; choose the one for which you have complete, legible details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Route | Information required | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| PAN and document details | PAN, document type, assessment/year type, date of issue and an accessible mobile number | Use this when the document does not provide a usable DIN or you want to search from its identifying details. |
| DIN | DIN and an accessible mobile number | Use this when the communication displays its Document Identification Number clearly. |
The mobile number entered for authentication does not have to be the number registered on the e-Filing portal, according to the Department’s FAQ. It must be a number you can access because the service sends an OTP to the number entered.
Step 4: Enter only the document’s details
Read the notice itself, not the surrounding email, and enter the requested values exactly. Check confusing characters in the DIN, the date format, the document type and the assessment or year selection. Use your own accessible mobile number in the field requested by the service. Never enter a password, card PIN, banking credential or other unrelated secret to complete authentication.
Step 5: Complete the OTP check
Submit the form and use the one-time password delivered to the entered mobile number. An OTP request from the official portal is part of this verification flow; an OTP request delivered through a suspicious message or a page reached from that message is not evidence of legitimacy.

Step 6: Interpret the result carefully
A matching result supports that the Department’s system has a corresponding communication with the details you supplied. Compare the result with the notice’s document type, issue date, DIN or other identifying information before taking action.
If the service says no record was found, do not switch to the suspicious message’s callback number or link. Recheck the values you entered once, then use the portal’s current Contact Us page and choose the service that matches your issue. A failed lookup can mean the details did not match an issued notice; it is not an instruction to continue through an unverified channel.
What is the DIN on an income tax notice?
DIN means Document Identification Number. The Department says communications issued on or after 1 October 2019 should bear a DIN. Its FAQ says that a notice, order or letter issued without a DIN would be treated as invalid, subject to the Department’s stated rule and scope.
Apply that date qualification precisely. The guidance concerns communications issued on or after 1 October 2019; it should not be expanded into a claim that every earlier document, or every document in every legal context, is invalid without a DIN. For a post-1 October 2019 communication, use the DIN route in “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD” when the number is present.
Where to find it
Look on the notice, order, summons or letter for the document’s identifying number. If it is hard to read, use the PAN-and-document-details route instead of guessing characters. Preserve the original file or paper copy while you verify it, because the issue date and document type are also needed for the alternative lookup.

Is this income tax refund message genuine?
A refund claim is a reason to verify, not a reason to hurry. The Department’s warnings mean that an unexpected refund email or SMS should not be used to collect your credentials or financial information. Do not open its attachment, follow its payment or “claim” link, or provide a card number, bank login, PIN, password or OTP requested by the message.
Instead, close the message and open e-Filing independently. Look for any corresponding official communication after you have reached the portal yourself. If the message claims to be a formal notice or order, run its details through “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD.” If there is no matching record, use the official Contact Us route rather than the message’s phone number or reply address.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I recognize a fake Income Tax Department website?
The Department’s dated guidance says: “Check for the domain name carefully. Fake emails will have misspelt or incorrect sounding variants of websites of the Income Tax Department.” Domain checking is useful, but it is only one part of a safe process. An imitation can also use convincing design, copied logos and official-sounding text.
Safer browsing rules
- Reach the portal through a known bookmark or by typing the Department’s address yourself.
- Do not use a link embedded in an unexpected message.
- Do not copy and paste a suspicious URL into the browser.
- Do not enter confidential information on a page reached from the suspicious message.
- Do not download or open an attachment merely because it carries a tax heading or government logo.
- Keep the suspicious page closed while you navigate to the official portal through an independent route.
These rules also apply to links sent through SMS, messaging applications and phone-linked notifications. A shorter message can be just as dangerous as a long email; the safe response is the same independent verification.
What should I do with a suspicious email, SMS or attachment?
Use a pause-and-preserve routine:
- Do not reply to the sender.
- Do not click a link or copy its URL into a browser.
- Do not open an attachment.
- Do not type passwords, PINs, card details, bank credentials or other confidential information into a page reached from the message.
- Record enough detail to report the message, including the sender information, the message content and any suspected website address, without visiting the address again.
- Verify any claimed notice independently through the e-Filing authentication service.
If you already opened a page but did not submit information, close it and continue verification from an independent browser session. If you submitted information, stop using the suspicious page and use the official portal and Department support channels for the affected service; do not return to the message for instructions.

Where do I report a fake Income Tax Department website?
The Department’s phishing guidance says to forward a suspected Income Tax Department email or website URL to [email protected]. It also lists [email protected] as an additional recipient. After forwarding the message through the published route, the Department advises deleting it.
Forwarding is safer than replying because a reply confirms that your address is active and keeps you inside the sender’s conversation. Do not add passwords, PINs, banking details or other confidential information to the report. If a suspected URL is included, send the address as evidence rather than opening it to investigate.
When should I use the Department’s Contact Us page?
Use the live official Contact Us page when authentication fails, the result does not match the document, or you need help with a service-specific issue. The page separates support for e-Filing, AIS or e-campaign matters, TRACES or TDS matters, and demand facilitation.

Quick decision guide for common messages
| What you received | Immediate response | Independent check |
|---|---|---|
| Email asking for a password, PIN or bank information | Do not reply, click or open attachments. | Open e-Filing yourself; report the email if it appears to impersonate the Department. |
| SMS promising a tax refund | Do not use its link or call its number. | Check independently in e-Filing and authenticate any claimed notice. |
| Notice with a DIN issued after 1 October 2019 | Keep the document and do not use the message’s link. | Use the DIN-and-mobile route in “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD.” |
| Notice without an easily readable DIN | Do not guess characters. | Use PAN, document type, assessment/year type, issue date and mobile number. |
| Authentication returns no record | Do not call the suspicious sender. | Recheck the entries once, then use the official Contact Us page. |
| Imitation website requesting information | Close it and do not submit anything. | Reach the official portal independently and forward the suspected URL for reporting. |
A repeatable checklist before you act
- Have I paused instead of responding to pressure?
- Did I open the official e-Filing portal independently?
- Am I avoiding the message’s link, copied URL, attachment and callback number?
- Does the claimed communication avoid requests for passwords, PINs and financial-account access information?
- Did I use “Authenticate Notice / Order issued by ITD” rather than trusting the message?
- Did I choose the correct lookup route: DIN, or PAN plus document details?
- Did I use an accessible mobile number for the OTP?
- If no record appeared, did I stop and use the official Contact Us page?
- Did I forward a suspected email or website URL to [email protected] and, where appropriate, [email protected]?
The practical test is independent confirmation, not appearance. A message may arrive by a normal channel and still be fraudulent; a legitimate communication may use email or SMS and still require you to verify it. Let the Department’s own portal and authentication service decide whether the document exists.
