Samsung Odyssey G32A (32-inch) Review: Big 165Hz Gaming, Low-Density 1080p

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Samsung Odyssey G32A, model LS32AG320NNXZA, is a sensible budget gaming monitor if you specifically want a large 32-inch screen, smooth 165Hz gameplay and strong VA contrast. Its decisive compromise is Full HD resolution: at this size, the approximately 68.8 pixels per inch look noticeably less sharp than 24-inch 1080p or 27-inch 1440p. Samsung’s US listing showed a $279.99 price but also a notification-style availability message, so check current stock and competing 1440p prices before buying.

Which Odyssey G32 is this?

“Odyssey G32” can refer to several G32A sizes and regional suffixes. This review covers the 32-inch US model LS32AG320NNXZA. The 24-inch and 27-inch versions can differ in physical design, ports and stand details, so do not assume their specifications apply here. Confirm the full model number on any listing.

Samsung’s official specifications are available on the US product page.

Is 32-inch 1080p a good combination?

The physical size is excellent for couch-distance gaming, films and a spacious game view. Full HD also places less demand on a graphics card than 1440p or 4K, making high frame rates easier for entry-level and midrange systems.

The trade-off is density. Using Samsung’s 32-inch diagonal and 1920×1080 resolution, the panel works out to approximately 68.8 PPI. Text, desktop icons, distant game details and foliage therefore look softer than on a 24-inch 1080p display or a 27-inch 1440p model. A deeper desk or greater viewing distance helps; close-range reading, coding and image editing are less comfortable.

Image quality and panel behavior

Contrast and dark scenes

VA technology is the G32A’s strongest image-quality argument. Samsung specifies a 3000:1 typical static contrast ratio, which can produce deeper blacks than many budget IPS monitors in a dim room. Single-player games and movies benefit from that extra shadow depth.

Motion and response

Samsung’s “1ms” figure is 1ms MPRT, usually associated with a blur-reduction mode; it is not a guarantee that every pixel transition completes in 1ms. VA dark-level transitions can be slower, producing black smearing behind moving objects or pale text scrolling over a dark background. An independent review measured about 4ms input lag at 165Hz and found the monitor responsive for general gaming, while also observing VA motion blur and clouding. That is one tester’s result, not a universal specification; unit-to-unit behavior can vary. See the independent review.

  • HDR10: Awe-inspiring graphics with HDR10. A kaleidoscope of shades brings game scenes to life with incredible vibrancy. Uncover the secrets hiding in the shadows with deep dark blacks, luminous whites, and outstandingly detailed resolution.

Brightness, viewing angles and HDR

250 cd/m² typical brightness is ordinary. It is adequate in a controlled room but less convincing opposite strong daylight. Samsung lists 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles, although a large VA screen can still show brightness or color changes when viewed off-center. HDR support is not identified on Samsung’s US specification list, so do not buy this monitor expecting meaningful HDR.

Gaming performance

What 165Hz adds

At 165Hz, cursor movement, camera pans and fast games look substantially smoother than at 60Hz. The improvement from 144Hz to 165Hz is comparatively small, and the panel only helps when the computer can produce high frame rates. Set the operating system and game to 165Hz rather than assuming the monitor defaults to it.

  • OUTMANEUVER OPPONENTS WITH SUPREME SPEED: Take your most intense gaming sessions to new heights.³ Experience ultra-smooth gameplay and razor-sharp visuals with a 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms GtG response time.
  • GET SMOOTH ACTION WITHOUT DISRUPTION: G-Sync compatibility syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag and image tearing. Along with AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, it creates ultra-smooth scenes that let you game with a competitive edge.⁴

Competitive play

The G32A is responsive enough for ordinary multiplayer and casual competitive play. Serious esports players should be more cautious: VA dark smearing can obscure targets, 32 inches is larger than the 24–25-inch format commonly preferred for shooters, and a fast IPS display may deliver cleaner motion despite lower contrast. The monitor is not unsuitable for shooters, but it is not a first choice for the most demanding competition.

Adaptive sync

AMD FreeSync Premium is officially listed. AMD GPU owners have the clearest supported path. NVIDIA users may be able to enable G-SYNC Compatible mode, but that is a compatibility possibility rather than an official certification here; test the exact GPU, driver and connection for flicker, black screens or low-range instability. HDMI and DisplayPort can behave differently.

Stand, ports and everyday use

The fully adjustable stand is a notable advantage at this price: Samsung lists height adjustment, swivel, pivot and tilt. That flexibility makes a large panel easier to position and can support portrait use, although you should confirm clearance and movement range for your desk.

Connectivity is basic: one DisplayPort 1.2, one HDMI 1.4 and a headphone output. There is no listed USB hub, USB-C docking, KVM or built-in speaker system. One PC and one console are straightforward; a laptop-plus-desktop workstation with peripherals is less convenient.

Recommended setup

  1. Connect a gaming PC through DisplayPort where possible.
  2. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the G32A and choose 165Hz.
  3. Enable FreeSync or Adaptive Sync in the monitor and AMD driver. With NVIDIA hardware, test G-SYNC Compatible mode and verify stability.
  4. Enable VRR in games that support it and cap frame rates sensibly if you see tearing or flicker.
  5. Start with Standard or Custom picture mode, neutral sharpness and brightness matched to the room.
  6. Test response-time/overdrive settings in a dark game and with scrolling light text. Use the least aggressive setting that avoids obvious trailing or inverse ghosting.
  7. Test any motion-blur-reduction mode separately: it can lower brightness and may not operate together with VRR.
  8. Use Eye Saver Mode at night only if its altered color and image appearance are acceptable.

Menu names and available options can vary by firmware and region.

Common drawbacks to check during the return window

  • Visible VA ghosting, especially in dark scenes or dark text.
  • Pixel density that feels coarse for close desktop work.
  • Brightness that is insufficient in a very bright room.
  • Clouding or backlight-uniformity variation between units.
  • The display remaining at 60Hz after installation.
  • VRR flicker or signal dropouts with a particular GPU, driver or cable.
  • Only two video inputs when several devices must remain connected.
  • A regional model suffix that does not match the advertised stand, ports or warranty.

User reports can help identify possible ghosting or buying issues, but they are anecdotal rather than controlled measurements; one example is documented at x-kom.

Who should buy the G32A?

  • Gamers who specifically want a large 32-inch image.
  • Owners of modest GPUs that benefit from 1080p frame-rate targets.
  • Players upgrading from 60Hz.
  • Buyers who value a height-adjustable, swivel, pivot and tilt stand.
  • Users who prefer VA contrast and sit somewhat farther from the screen.
  • Shoppers finding it at a substantial discount.

Who should choose something else?

  • Close-range productivity users who need crisp text.
  • Competitive FPS players prioritizing the cleanest motion.
  • Anyone seeking 1440p, 4K, HDR, USB-C, a USB hub or integrated speakers.
  • Buyers who need consistent color from wide viewing angles.
  • Shoppers paying near $279.99 when a current 27-inch 1440p high-refresh monitor costs only slightly more.

Alternatives by priority

Priority Better direction Trade-off
Sharper general-purpose image 27-inch 1440p, high-refresh monitor Higher GPU demand
Competitive motion 24-inch 1080p high-refresh IPS Smaller screen and weaker contrast
Large-screen sharpness 32-inch 1440p VA Usually costs more and needs a stronger GPU
Laptop docking USB-C productivity monitor Often less gaming-focused
Best motion and contrast OLED gaming monitor Substantially higher cost and OLED-specific considerations

Verdict

The Odyssey G32A is a good fit when its priorities are clear: a large, inexpensive 165Hz gaming screen, deep VA contrast and an unusually flexible stand. Full HD at 32 inches is not automatically bad, but it is a real sharpness compromise that dominates close desktop use. Buy it on a meaningful discount after checking the exact model and return policy. Near Samsung’s listed $279.99 price, compare 27-inch 1440p and 24-inch fast IPS alternatives before committing.
