SteamOS Beyond Steam Deck: Official Handheld Support, Legion Go S and What Comes Next

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamOS is no longer exclusive to the Steam Deck. Valve’s first officially licensed third-party handheld is Lenovo’s Legion Go S SteamOS edition. However, Valve’s current support list remains narrow: it names only Steam Deck and Legion Go S, while compatibility work for other AMD handheld PCs continues. Lenovo also markets SteamOS configurations for Legion Go 2, but that does not yet make every Legion Go 2 model officially supported by Valve.

This distinction matters. A device can ship with SteamOS, be listed by its manufacturer, boot a community image or merely start the operating system without receiving the same hardware integration and support as a certified product.

Valve’s current SteamOS page lists Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go S as officially supported while saying it is broadening support and improving compatibility with other AMD-powered handhelds.

What Valve actually announced

On January 7, 2025, Valve announced that the Lenovo Legion Go S would be the first third-party handheld officially licensed to ship with SteamOS. Valve also said work on the Legion Go S would improve the operating system for other handhelds. The announcement is available in Valve’s news post.

The important correction to the original “coming beyond Steam Deck” story is that the expansion already happened. Lenovo subsequently published the Legion Go S SteamOS edition as a real product line, including device-specific support information and installation documentation.

Valve’s licensing language is separate from the open-source Linux components underneath SteamOS. Its FAQ explains that redistribution of the Steam Client, SteamOS branding and Valve trademarks requires a license. A manufacturer using Linux components, or a user installing a community distribution, is therefore not automatically offering an officially licensed SteamOS product.

What “official” means in practice

Officially licensed hardware

The manufacturer has worked with Valve and can ship SteamOS under the agreed branding. The Legion Go S SteamOS edition is the clearest example.

Officially supported by Valve

Valve’s own support materials identify the device as supported. This is the strongest status a buyer can verify from Valve, and it is currently narrower than the list of handhelds that may boot SteamOS.

Manufacturer-provided installation

A company may publish a recovery image or installation procedure for a particular model. That is useful evidence of a supported path, but it should not be confused with Valve adding every configuration to its official hardware list.

Community-compatible

Users may make SteamOS or a SteamOS-like Linux distribution work on unsupported hardware. Community success can be impressive, but it does not provide Valve or manufacturer warranty for controls, firmware, sleep, audio, wireless networking or power management.

Simply boots

A handheld that starts the installer has passed only the first test. Button mapping, gyro, fan control, display scaling, SD-card access, docking, external displays and suspend/resume can still be incomplete.

Why the Legion Go S matters

The Legion Go S is the first clear SteamOS alternative to the Deck with both manufacturer involvement and Valve licensing. It gives buyers a controller-first Steam interface on non-Valve hardware rather than requiring a Windows installation or a community Linux image.

That does not make it identical to a Steam Deck. Lenovo’s Legion Go S SteamOS FAQ warns that shortcut labels may not match the physical button layout because SteamOS was not fully customized for that layout. Hardware-specific differences can also affect gyro behavior, RGB lighting, fan and thermal controls, charge limits, firmware updates, docking, external-display handshakes, SD cards and sleep/wake reliability.

Legion Go 2: announced, but check the support boundary

Lenovo announced a Legion Go 2 SteamOS configuration in its CES 2026 materials at Lenovo’s press site. Lenovo’s product pages also list SteamOS among available operating-system options: US product page.

Valve’s support page retrieved for this article still lists only Steam Deck and Legion Go S. The responsible description is therefore “Lenovo-marketed or announced SteamOS configuration,” not “officially supported by Valve,” unless Valve’s list changes.

Lenovo’s US information describes Legion Go Gen 2 configurations with up to an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, 32 GB of memory, 2 TB of storage and a 74-Wh battery. The retrieved page showed a $1,099.99 starting-price signal for a listed configuration; model, region, stock and configuration limits apply. See the configuration information at Lenovo’s US listing and the product page with its regional qualification at Lenovo.

That hardware may be substantially faster than a Deck on paper, but specifications do not establish battery life, suspend behavior, driver completeness or value. Lenovo also distinguishes Windows and SteamOS models: Legion Space is available on Windows models but not SteamOS models, and some fingerprint and audio functions are Windows-specific or unavailable on SteamOS configurations.

What SteamOS gives you on a handheld

Valve describes SteamOS as a Linux-based system optimized for gamepad control. Its official overview lists:

  • Steam Library access, Steam Cloud and Steam Chat.
  • Steam Game Recording.
  • Quick suspend and resume.
  • Built-in system updates.
  • A desktop mode for installing other software.
  • Proton-based support for many Windows games.

The practical benefit is the console-like layer around Steam: controller-first navigation, fewer Windows desktop interruptions, one library interface and tighter integration with Steam Input and cloud saves. These are platform design advantages, not a guarantee that every device will deliver identical performance or power behavior.

Game compatibility: broad, but not universal

SteamOS runs many Windows games through Proton. Valve’s page reported more than 18,000 titles checked when that page was published. That is a dated, dynamic snapshot rather than a permanent catalog total; Proton, game, launcher and anti-cheat updates can change results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verified

Valve considers the game suitable for the target handheld experience, including controls and common display behavior.

Playable or unverified

The game may work, but you may need to adjust controls, graphics, text size, launch options or a Proton version.

Unsupported

The game may fail because of anti-cheat, a launcher, video playback, controls or another compatibility problem. A faster APU does not remove those operating-system constraints.

Check each important game’s current Steam compatibility information rather than treating the 18,000-plus figure as a guarantee.

Non-Steam games and desktop use

Valve says you can switch to desktop mode and install other software. Epic, GOG and other launchers may work through desktop-mode setup or third-party tools, but they are generally less integrated than on Windows. Launcher updates, gamepad detection and cloud-save behavior can require manual attention.

PC Game Pass is the clearest reason to stay with Windows: its native Windows experience is not replaced by SteamOS. Windows also remains preferable for productivity applications, unusual peripherals, manufacturer utilities and software that depends on Windows drivers. Valve explicitly cautions that users should not treat SteamOS as a replacement for a general desktop operating system.

SteamOS versus Windows on a handheld

Priority SteamOS Windows
Steam library and controller navigation Integrated, console-like interface Works, but with a conventional desktop layer
Suspend/resume Designed as a core handheld feature; device implementation still matters Varies by hardware, drivers and Windows configuration
PC Game Pass No native Windows Game Pass experience Native access
Epic, GOG and other stores Possible through desktop mode or tools, with more setup Usually straightforward
Manufacturer control panels May be absent or incomplete; Lenovo says Legion Space is unavailable on SteamOS models Broadest access to vendor utilities
Productivity and peripherals Linux compatibility varies Broadest driver and application compatibility
Updates Integrated SteamOS updates on supported hardware Windows, driver and vendor updates come through several channels

Installing SteamOS: the verified Legion Go S path

Lenovo publishes device-specific instructions at its SteamOS installation support page. The process is not a universal recipe for every handheld.

  1. Download the SteamOS image intended for your exact Legion Go S model from Lenovo Support.
  2. Prepare a USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of capacity.
  3. Use Rufus or an equivalent imaging utility to create a bootable installer. Creating the installer erases the USB drive.
  4. Back up files, Windows recovery media, firmware utilities and any saves not synchronized to the cloud.
  5. Power the handheld off and boot it from the USB drive, using the model’s boot-menu procedure.
  6. Enter the SteamOS repair or installation environment.
  7. Follow Lenovo’s model-specific prompts and confirm whether the process will repartition or overwrite the internal SSD.

For other handhelds, the image, BIOS settings, Secure Boot requirements, firmware packages and recovery steps can differ. Retain a Windows recovery path before replacing the factory operating system.

What can go wrong on unsupported hardware

  • Wireless networking or audio may require a missing driver or workaround.
  • Sleep and wake may drain the battery or fail to restore the display.
  • TDP, fan curves and charge limits may not have a working control panel.
  • Built-in buttons, touchpads, gyro or trigger modes may map incorrectly.
  • External monitors, docks or display rotation may behave inconsistently.
  • SD-card readers, fingerprint sensors and firmware updates may lack support.
  • A community image may update independently of the manufacturer’s recovery tools.

“Can install” is therefore a much weaker claim than “works well” or “officially supported.”

Should you buy now, wait or use another distribution?

Buy an official SteamOS handheld now if

  • You mainly play games from Steam.
  • You value controller navigation and quick suspend/resume.
  • You do not need native PC Game Pass.
  • You prefer a manufacturer-supported build over community troubleshooting.

Stay with Windows if

  • Game Pass is central to your library.
  • You regularly use Epic, GOG or several PC launchers.
  • You need productivity software, unusual peripherals or vendor tuning utilities.
  • You want the broadest driver compatibility.

Wait if

  • You specifically want Legion Go 2 SteamOS but local availability or Valve’s support status is unclear.
  • You need confirmed battery, firmware and suspend behavior rather than announced specifications.
  • You are comparing a discounted Windows handheld with a newer SteamOS model and the total cost is unsettled.

Consider Bazzite only when

You own unsupported hardware, are comfortable troubleshooting and want a SteamOS-like Linux interface without requiring Valve or manufacturer support. Bazzite is a separate community distribution, not SteamOS and not a Valve-certified product.

The bottom line on SteamOS beyond the Deck

Valve has begun turning SteamOS into a broader handheld platform, but it has not made the operating system a universal drop-in replacement for Windows. Legion Go S is the first officially licensed third-party example. Legion Go 2 shows where the market may be heading, while Valve’s own support list remains more conservative. Treat licensing, official support, manufacturer installation guidance and community compatibility as four different claims, then choose based on your launcher needs, tolerance for troubleshooting and the exact model available in your region.
