During playback, the note can scroll alongside the recording, helping you find the context behind a sparse or unclear line. It is a way to revisit what you captured—not a substitute for listening, choosing important ideas, or checking details.
Record a lecture inside a Samsung Notes note
- Open Samsung Notes and create a note.
- Tap Insert (the plus icon), then choose Voice recording. Samsung’s current US instructions use these labels; they can vary with the app version.
- While the timer runs, type, draw with a finger, or write with an S Pen. Samsung says the written activity synchronizes with the audio.
- Tap Stop to save the recording. Expand the audio timeline in the note and tap Play to review it alongside your notes.
You can move through the timeline to seek forward or backward. Samsung also documents sharing a recording, adjusting playback speed (with 0.5× and 1.0× shown as examples), and adding more audio to an existing recording. Check the controls in your version of the app rather than assuming every device shows identical menus.

Use playback to recover missing context
Samsung describes playback that animates and scrolls the note in time with the recorded voice. If you wrote a shorthand phrase or left a gap, follow the note and audio together to hear what was being discussed at that point. This can make review more targeted than replaying a long recording from the beginning.
Keep the original note content you may want to navigate from: Samsung warns that deleting handwritten content removes the ability to jump to its corresponding audio point. The recording may remain, but that note-to-audio cue is lost.

Transcripts and summaries depend on the device and software
Samsung’s US Notes instructions describe opening a transcript from the recording menu and switching to a Summary view. A Samsung manual for the Galaxy Z Fold6 also documents converting inserted recordings to text in Notes, and Voice Recorder functions for transcription, keywords, summaries, translation, and transcript editing. These documented configurations do not establish that every feature is available on every Galaxy device, language, region, or software version.
Treat generated text as a review aid, not a definitive record. Check names, specialist terms, equations, and any detail that matters against the audio or course materials. Samsung’s cited documentation does not establish a transcript accuracy rate.

Choose between a synchronized note and a standalone recording
| Workflow | Best suited to | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Notes recording | Taking notes while capturing audio, then navigating between the two | Pairs typed or handwritten activity with playback; Samsung documents animated note playback. |
| Voice Recorder | Capturing audio to replay, save, or share without composing a synchronized note | Records and saves a standalone audio file. Samsung’s Notes instructions also say Voice Recorder recordings can be converted into memos in Notes. |
The standalone Voice Recorder path is: open Voice Recorder, start recording, stop when finished, then name and save the file. Samsung’s Philippines support page, last updated March 16, 2026, says recordings can be played and shared; it lists My Files > Internal storage > Recordings > Voice Recorder as a file location, while noting that menus and paths can vary by device, software, or app version.
You do not need a Galaxy tablet or S Pen to start
Samsung describes the synchronized Notes workflow on Galaxy phones as well as tablets. Its instructions allow typing, drawing with a finger, or writing with an S Pen, so a tablet and stylus are optional rather than a stated requirement. A Galaxy tablet with S Pen may suit someone who prefers a larger handwriting surface, but check the specific model’s current Notes and S Pen support before buying; Samsung’s cited material does not identify a particular current model as necessary.

If the recording option is missing
- Check the app version: Samsung says some features may be unavailable or grayed out without the latest Samsung Notes version.
- Allow for model and software differences: Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by device model and software version.
- Check the separate app: If your immediate goal is simply to capture and replay sound, Voice Recorder provides a standalone recording workflow, though its menus and file paths can also differ.
Samsung’s documentation describes how the tools work; it does not show that recording produces complete notes or improves grades. Use the synchronized audio to fill in context and verify what matters, while continuing to listen and record the ideas you need.
