HP advises printing at least weekly and says using an ink tank printer every one to two weeks can help reduce the risk of dried or clogged printhead nozzles. That is HP guidance, not a universal schedule: check your exact model’s manual for its maintenance and storage instructions.
Why does an ink tank printer need regular use?
Inactivity-related drying is usually a printhead issue, not ink drying inside the sealed reservoir. Ink can dry around the tiny printhead nozzles and interfere with output. HP recommends regular printing and keeping the printer powered so its automatic maintenance can run; the maintenance behavior depends on the model. HP Tech Takes explains the risk and its general prevention guidance.

How often should you print?
If you rarely print, aim for a small print job about once a week as a practical preventive habit. HP gives two related recommendations: print at least once a week, or use the printer every one to two weeks, even if it is only to print a page. The guidance does not specify a page design, amount of color coverage, or print volume that will be sufficient for every model, so do not treat a particular test page as a guaranteed solution.
Your manufacturer’s instructions take priority. There is no single interval established for every ink tank printer, and automatic maintenance differs by model. For example, Epson describes automatic head maintenance for certain Stylus Photo models; that does not establish the same schedule for every Epson or other-brand printer. Epson’s FAQ describes the feature on the specified models.

Should you leave the printer powered on?
HP recommends keeping the printer powered so automatic maintenance can run. Whether and when a particular printer performs maintenance is model-specific. Follow its manual for power settings and avoid assuming that leaving any printer on will trigger the same cleaning routine.
Automatic maintenance can consume ink. Epson notes that its specified automatic head-maintenance feature uses ink, so routine cleaning is not cost-free. See Epson’s model-specific explanation.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Look for symptoms such as blank pages, blurry text, or a missing color.
- Run the printer’s nozzle check using the steps in its manual.
- If the pattern shows missing lines or clogs, run the recommended head-cleaning procedure and check the result.
- Use a more intensive cleaning only if the manual recommends it for a persistent or severe problem.
Epson recommends a nozzle check and head cleaning when output is blank, blurry, missing a color, or the check indicates clogs. Its FAQ describes power cleaning as more ink-intensive and intended for severe or repeated clogging, not routine prevention. Epson’s cleaning guidance covers nozzle checks and cleaning.

What if the printer will be unused for a long time?
For an extended absence or planned storage, follow the instructions for your exact model rather than relying on a weekly-use rule. Epson professional documentation describes automatic cleaning after power-on for particular equipment, while another maintenance schedule calls for pre-storage maintenance for long-term non-use. These procedures apply to the machines covered by those guides; they are not universal household-printer instructions.
