Use Do not disturb (DND) when you mainly want to silence calls, alerts, and notifications while allowing chosen exceptions. Use Modes and Routines when you want phone behavior to change automatically as part of a broader setup. They are not competing switches: a mode can turn on DND and coordinate it with other supported settings.

Choose Do not disturb for straightforward quiet time
DND is the direct choice if your goal is to reduce interruptions rather than automate wider phone behavior. Samsung documents settings for calls and messages, app notifications, alarms and sounds, and hiding certain notifications. You can set a DND schedule, including multiple schedules on supported interfaces, or switch it on from Quick Settings or device settings.

Choose Modes and Routines for broader automation
Modes and Routines is the better fit when quiet time is one part of a larger change. A routine runs selected actions when its chosen conditions are met, or can be started manually. A mode can be customized and activated automatically; Samsung’s “Stay focused” option can combine DND with restrictions on app use.

For example, if you want a focused setup rather than only muted notifications, configure a mode with DND and any additional supported actions that suit your needs. The exact actions depend on the device and software version. Samsung’s setup path is Settings > Modes and Routines; see its setup guidance.
Can you use them together?
Yes. DND handles interruption rules, while a mode or routine can make DND part of a wider arrangement. Use DND by itself when its schedules and exceptions are enough. Add a mode when you also want coordinated changes, such as app restrictions. This distinction is about scope, not a requirement to choose one feature permanently.

Check your Galaxy’s software and menu names
Samsung cautions that Modes and Routines availability varies by device and software version. Samsung UK says that on Android 14 and Android 13, features previously in the Bixby Routines app are available under Settings > Modes and Routines; on Android 12 and Android 11, routines are provided through the Bixby Routines app. Menu names and navigation may therefore differ across Galaxy devices. Consult Samsung’s UK Routines guidance for that version distinction.
