If your Samsung Galaxy sends ordinary texts but not pictures or group messages, check carrier service, cellular data, and the carrier’s APN before changing app settings. MMS depends on carrier and phone configuration that SMS may not need. Work through the reversible checks below first; if they do not help, your carrier may need to check the account, SIM, or MMS provisioning.
First, identify what is failing
SMS is the traditional text-only service. MMS carries picture messages and can be used for group conversations. RCS is a separate messaging service with its own connection and settings. Because they rely on different services and configuration, a text-only message can work even when MMS does not.

- Pictures and group MMS fail for everyone: check cellular data, APN, carrier service, and SIM.
- It began after a carrier, SIM, app, or software change: prioritize the related account, default-app, or provisioning checks.
Check carrier service and mobile data
Confirm that your account is active, your plan supports MMS, and any required balance or credit is available. If those look right, ask your carrier whether there is an outage or an MMS provisioning problem. Samsung lists carrier and service issues among possible causes, but the symptom alone does not identify which one applies. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide and Google Messages Help both recommend checking service and plan-related factors.

On the phone, turn off Airplane mode, check that cellular signal is available, and turn on mobile data. If needed, temporarily turn Wi-Fi off to confirm that the phone has a cellular data connection. Wi-Fi alone is not a dependable substitute for the cellular data connection required by carrier MMS; exact behavior can vary by carrier. Telstra’s Australian Galaxy S24 instructions also require mobile data for picture messaging. Telstra’s guide is specific to its Australian service and Galaxy S24 on Android 14.
Reset or verify the carrier APN
An Access Point Name (APN) is carrier configuration used for mobile data and, depending on the carrier, MMS. A wrong or missing APN can prevent picture messaging even when other phone functions work. APN values and menu labels vary by carrier, market, model, and software version, so do not enter values copied from another country or carrier.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Open Settings and look for Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names. The exact path can differ.
- If available, use the menu to reset APNs to their default settings. Google recommends resetting APN settings during MMS troubleshooting.
- If MMS still fails, obtain the current APN instructions from your own carrier and follow them. Samsung’s Korean support guide describes registering the APN for the carrier whose SIM is installed; its examples are not universal settings. Samsung Korea’s APN and SIM guidance is regional.
Check the messaging app and its settings
Make sure the app you intend to use is set as the default SMS app and is up to date. If the problem started after a software update, try switching the default messaging app; Samsung notes this can restore messaging functionality in some cases.
Clear the cache for the correct Messages app, then restart the phone. Samsung phones may have more than one messaging app installed, so check which one you use before opening its app settings. Prefer clearing cache to clearing app data: clearing data can remove locally stored app information or settings and is not a harmless first step. Samsung’s guide covers app and default-app troubleshooting: Samsung US support.

If the issue is group messaging in Google Messages
In Google Messages, open Messages settings → Advanced → Group messaging. Choose Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group MMS) if you want replies to stay in one group conversation. The mass-text option sends SMS messages separately, so replies arrive individually. This setting applies to Google Messages; labels may change with app updates. Google’s MMS troubleshooting guidance explains the distinction.
Check the SIM and recent carrier changes
If your phone has a removable SIM, power it down if appropriate for your model, check that the SIM is seated correctly and undamaged, then restart. A SIM ejector pin may help remove the tray, but reseating the card will not fix an outage, incorrect APN, or carrier-side provisioning problem.

If you recently changed carriers while keeping the same phone, contact the current carrier. It may need to reprogram service, test the SIM, or replace it. Samsung also recommends checking the SIM and restarting in its Korean troubleshooting guidance, while noting that carrier-specific configuration matters. Samsung US support discusses carrier changes; Samsung Korea provides regional SIM guidance.
Check recipient-specific and travel-related failures
If messages fail only to one person, send a picture message to another number before changing phone settings. If the second message works, the problem may be at the receiving end; Telstra recommends this check in its Galaxy S24 guide.

When travelling, MMS may require data roaming. Telstra’s advice to enable roaming is specific to its Australian service and Galaxy S24 guidance; roaming availability and charges depend on your carrier, plan, and destination. Confirm the terms with your carrier before turning it on. Telstra’s travel-related instructions are not a universal roaming rule.
If the problem began after switching phones or messaging apps
If you moved from an iPhone and messages from iPhone users are not arriving correctly, deregister iMessage for your number. If you changed Android messaging apps, Google says RCS may need to be turned off while resolving transition problems. These steps address message routing and RCS transitions; they do not replace checking carrier MMS service and APN configuration. See Google Messages Help.
Escalate before considering a factory reset
If the checks above do not restore MMS, contact your carrier and explain whether SMS works, whether MMS fails for all recipients, and whether the problem followed a SIM or carrier change. Ask it to verify account restrictions, MMS support, APN requirements, SIM status, outages, and provisioning. These are carrier-side checks that you may not be able to resolve from the phone.

A factory reset is a last resort, not an initial MMS fix. Samsung’s extended troubleshooting flow places it later and advises backing up first; if network problems remain afterward, contact the carrier. A reset can erase personal data and settings, so do not use it as a substitute for carrier diagnosis. Samsung’s extended troubleshooting guide covers the later-stage process.
