For ordinary plowed winter roads, the right SUV is one with a suitable AWD or 4WD system and four properly matched winter tires. For deep, unplowed snow, ground clearance and the specific vehicle’s capability matter more. No single drivetrain, high-powered engine, or snow mode guarantees grip when braking or turning, and the available sources do not establish one overall best SUV in a controlled comparison.
Start with the snow you actually drive in
Plowed roads with packed snow, ice, and slush call for reliable tire grip and predictable control. AWD or 4WD can distribute power to help the vehicle get moving, but it does not create extra tire grip for braking or cornering. Winter tires are relevant even when an SUV drives all four wheels.

Deep snow on unplowed roads adds another constraint: snow can reach the vehicle’s underside and impede travel. Ground clearance becomes more important as snow depth increases. A vehicle suited to routine winter commuting is not automatically suited to deep snow or remote unplowed routes.

What to compare in an SUV
AWD or 4WD system
Check the drivetrain on the exact trim you are considering, rather than assuming every version of a model has the same equipment. Also check whether it offers a snow or terrain mode and what the owner’s manual says that mode changes. A selectable setting can be useful, but its presence is not a comparative snow-performance test.
#1 Best Overall
- 50,000 mile warranty
- All-Season Touring Tire
- Ideal for consumers looking for plenty of miles, good traction and fuel economy
- M+S Rated (mud and snow)
- Manufactured by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company
Ground clearance
Compare clearance with the snow conditions you expect, and verify the current model-year and trim specifications with the manufacturer. Edmunds’ guide to SUVs for snow cites 8.7 inches for the Subaru Crosstrek and describes its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. That figure is specific to the source’s coverage; do not assume it applies to every year or trim.
Tires and fitment
Tire size and fitment are vehicle-specific. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association’s Care and Service of Passenger and Light Truck Tires guidance says all four tires should be the same size unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise, and says winter/snow tires are preferably fitted at all wheel positions. Follow the owner’s manual and consult a qualified tire professional for the exact fitment; do not mix tire sizes based on a general rule.

Crash safety
Consider crash-safety performance separately from winter traction. The IIHS 2026 Top Safety Pick list for small SUVs includes the Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-50, and Hyundai Tucson. These awards concern safety, not snow traction. Check the IIHS listing for the award and any build-date qualifications that apply to the specific vehicle.

| Candidate | Snow-relevant detail | What to verify | Safety context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subaru Crosstrek | Edmunds describes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and cites 8.7 inches of clearance in its guide. | Confirm drivetrain and ground clearance for the model year and trim being considered. | Check the applicable model and build-date details in the IIHS award listing; the Edmunds feature information does not establish a snow test result. |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | Edmunds discusses 4WD configurations and Selec-Terrain snow mode. | Confirm the exact 4WD configuration and available terrain settings on the trim and year. | The cited snow guide does not establish an IIHS award for a specific Grand Cherokee configuration. |
| Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-50, and Hyundai Tucson | The cited IIHS page lists these among 2026 small-SUV Top Safety Pick recipients. | Check the award’s scope and build-date qualifications on the IIHS page. | IIHS award status is crash-safety context, not evidence of winter traction. |
The Edmunds guide is editorial feature coverage, not a cited controlled comparison of SUV performance in snow. The IIHS evaluates safety, and USTMA provides tire-care guidance; none of these sources supplies an apples-to-apples snow test that can identify a definitive winner.
Rank #3
- A studdable winter tire, the Winter Pike X (W429A) is designed for use on CUVs, SUVs, and light trucks and offers drivers strong traction and performance on icy, snowy, and wet roads in addition to a longer tread life.
- Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified
- Can be pinned with TSMI #12 studs, where permitted, for extra traction in severe ice and snow
- Wide block in the center of the tread provides improved snow and ice traction
- Built with a new rubber compound that boosts strength and durability for a longer tread life
Choose winter tires for the exact vehicle
AWD and 4WD help deliver power to the wheels; winter tires address the tire-to-road grip on which starting, stopping, and turning depend. An AWD or 4WD badge is not a reason to skip winter tires when conditions call for them. Use the vehicle manual to confirm tire size and requirements, and fit winter tires across all wheel positions unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise.

- Decide whether your regular routes are plowed roads or include deep, unplowed snow.
- Verify AWD or 4WD availability on the exact trim, along with any snow or terrain setting.
- Check manufacturer-published ground clearance for that model year and trim if deep snow is a concern.
- Confirm the approved tire size and winter-tire fitment in the owner’s manual; ask a qualified tire professional if needed.
- Review crash-safety information independently of snow capability, and confirm award applicability for the vehicle’s model year and build date.
- Choose for passenger and cargo needs and local availability as well as winter equipment.
A strong engine by itself is not evidence that an SUV will perform better in snow. Do not treat power, drivetrain labels, clearance, or a terrain mode as a substitute for suitable tires and cautious driving.
