If a messaging app keeps closing on a Samsung phone, the crash is a symptom—not a diagnosis. First identify whether the affected app is Samsung Messages, Google Messages, or another app; then try updates, a restart, and basic storage checks before moving to riskier steps. The right fix depends on the app, Galaxy model, and software version.
First identify which messaging app is closing
Samsung Messages and Google Messages are separate apps, and a Galaxy phone may have either or both. Open Settings > Apps and select the app that closes; menu wording can vary by model and software version. Check its name and, where available, its version before following advice meant for a specific app. If more than one messaging app is installed, test them separately.

An app may close because of an app defect, a pending or incompatible app or system update, interference from downloaded software, or a wider device problem. General support guidance cannot establish which cause applies to a particular phone, so do not assume that a specific update or model-wide defect is responsible.
Try low-risk checks first
Update the app and phone
Check the app’s distribution store for an update, then check the phone for available software updates, including Google Play system updates. Update labels and paths vary across Galaxy models and Android versions. Restart and check free storage
Restart the phone, then open the messaging app again. Check available storage in Settings and free space if the device is nearly full. Google Android Help says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of storage is free; this is a general warning, not proof that low storage caused a particular app crash. Google does not state a publication year for that guidance on the cited page.
If just one app keeps closing, clear its cache
If the rest of the phone works normally, open Settings > Apps > [the affected app]. If needed, choose Force stop, then open Storage or Storage & cache and choose Clear cache. The exact labels vary. Reopen the app and see whether it stays open. Clearing cache is different from clearing data; do not select the latter yet. Samsung also recommends checking the app’s permissions and compatibility. Review permissions from the app’s Settings > Apps page, and make sure the app is supported by the phone’s current software. Safe mode starts the phone with original device software and disables downloaded apps. Samsung and Google explain how to enter Safe mode, but the button sequence varies across Galaxy models, so follow the instructions for your specific device: Samsung’s Safe mode instructions and Google Android Help.

Test the messaging app while the phone is in Safe mode. If it stops closing, a downloaded app is a likely contributor. Restart normally, then remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing the messaging app after each removal. If it still closes in Safe mode, the test has not identified a downloaded app as the cause; continue with app-specific support or Samsung support as appropriate.
Clear app data only after protecting information you need
Clearing data is a more consequential step than clearing cache. Samsung warns that it erases information stored by the app and may sign you out. Before using Settings > Apps > [the affected app] > Storage > Clear data, make sure any messages or other information you need are backed up or otherwise protected. Do not assume all app data is synced or recoverable.

If the app is preinstalled, the available option may be Uninstall updates rather than a full uninstall. Check the app’s Settings > Apps page and follow Samsung’s instructions for your device: Samsung Support. Clearing data or uninstalling updates is not a guaranteed fix.

When to contact support—and why reset comes last
If the problem continues after these checks, contact the messaging-app developer when the crash is isolated to that app. If other Galaxy functions are also failing, or the issue appears broader than one app, contact Samsung Support. Google likewise recommends contacting an app’s developer for an app-specific problem: Google Android Help.

A factory data reset erases device data and requires setting up the phone again. Treat it as a last resort, back up first, and do not expect it to permanently solve a bug that requires an app update. Samsung’s guidance covers reset and broader messaging troubleshooting: app troubleshooting and messaging troubleshooting. The messaging guide addresses slow, unsent, or undelivered messages; it does not establish a universal cause for apps closing.
