To set a live wallpaper on a Samsung Galaxy, choose a saved video in Gallery, preview it, trim it if the option appears, and apply it to the Lock screen or Home screen if your phone offers that destination. Menu names and screen options differ by device, software version, and region.
Set a video wallpaper on the Lock screen
Samsung’s US support guide documents this built-in route. A Lock screen must already be set up.

- Touch and hold the Lock screen. Authenticate if prompted.
- Tap Wallpapers in the upper-left corner.
- Tap Gallery, then select the video saved on your phone.
- Tap Done to preview the wallpaper.
- If Trim appears, adjust the slider to choose the section you want and preview it.
- Tap Done to apply it.

Try a video wallpaper on the Home screen

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper and style, then Change wallpapers.
- Tap Gallery and choose the video.
- Tap Done to preview it; use Trim if the control appears.
- Tap Done to apply the wallpaper if your phone offers the Home screen as a destination.
Do not assume that every Galaxy offers the same destination. Samsung Japan’s documented workflow says its video wallpaper can be applied only to the Lock screen. Follow the choices displayed on your device rather than treating the US menu path as universal. See Samsung US support and Samsung Japan support.
What “live wallpaper” means here
These steps set a video from Gallery as wallpaper. They do not describe a weather-reactive wallpaper or an AI-generated wallpaper feature. Samsung’s UK One UI 5.1.1 feature page describes trimming a video clip to create a lively wallpaper; its wording is specific to that feature page, not a guarantee that every Galaxy has identical controls. If you cannot find the video option
- Check the Lock screen setup. Samsung says the Lock-screen video workflow requires a Lock screen to be set up first.
- Make sure the clip is on the phone. Samsung Canada says photos and videos must be saved on the Galaxy device, not merely stored online, to use them as wallpaper. Open the video in Gallery after it is saved locally.
- Check the destination and launcher. Look for a video option in the wallpaper controls for the screen you want. Samsung Japan cautions that a third-party launcher can make some functions unavailable; the available controls may depend on the model, software, country, and carrier.
- Use trimming only if it is offered. Samsung’s current US instructions document trimming when the control appears, but do not set a universal maximum video length. An older UK support page describes a 15-second limit for a prior workflow; that figure should not be assumed to apply to current Galaxy models.
