The Galaxy Watch9 is substantially faster in benchmarks than the Watch8, but that does not make it a wholesale upgrade. In Notebookcheck’s September 20, 2026 review, the new processor delivered benchmark gains of up to 65%; everyday use felt smooth, with occasional minor delays. The trade-off is familiar: battery life remains short enough to require regular charging, and several health features are restricted to Samsung phones.
Is the Galaxy Watch9 worth it?
It is a compelling choice if you want a bright-screen Wear OS watch, strong performance, and broad health and workout features—and you use a compatible Samsung phone for the health tools that require one. It is a less convincing upgrade if your Watch8 works well, you expect multi-day battery life, or you need ECG, blood-pressure, and sleep-apnea features to work with a non-Samsung phone.

Notebookcheck reviewer Marcus Herbrich described the ninth-generation watch as a strong overall package but a relatively modest upgrade over its predecessor. That captures the distinction: the processor is a notable step forward, while the overall ownership experience has not been transformed.
How much faster is the Galaxy Watch9?
The defining change is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite SW6100, replacing the Watch8’s processor. Notebookcheck measured benchmark gains of up to 65% over the Watch8. One example in its results was Octane V2: 21,546 points for the Watch9 versus 13,026 for the Watch8. The review notes different browser versions for the two results, so this single benchmark is not a universal measure of speed.

In normal use, reviewers found the watch smooth overall, though occasional small delays remained. Treat the 65% figure as a best-case benchmark result, not a promise that every app or task will feel 65% faster.
What is new compared with the Galaxy Watch8?
Beyond the processor, the Watch9 retains the familiar round, brushed-aluminum design and feature set rather than introducing a broad redesign. The display remains a 1.5-inch, 480 × 480 Super AMOLED panel with sapphire crystal on the tested 44 mm model. It runs Wear OS 7 with One UI 9.0 and includes Bluetooth 6.0, GPS, 2 GB of memory, and 32 GB of storage, according to Notebookcheck’s test configuration.
The 44 mm battery is 445 mAh, 10 mAh larger than the Watch8’s, but the review did not find improved endurance. The review says the 40 mm variant receives the advertised 20% battery-capacity increase; it does not establish that the smaller model lasts longer in equivalent real-world use.

How long does the Galaxy Watch9 battery last?
Battery life is the main caveat. In Notebookcheck’s 44 mm test, the watch used about 40% to 50% charge between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. With sleep tracking enabled, consumption was about 60% to 70% over 24 hours. In that software configuration, the reviewer found no endurance improvement over the Watch8 and saw slightly worse results.
Those figures came from testing with Always-On Display and health features enabled, no eSIM, and no manually started workouts during the daytime interval. Your results will vary with settings, cellular use, workouts, and how you use the watch. A full recharge from empty took almost 1.5 hours in the review, so frequent charging is part of the experience.
How bright is the Galaxy Watch9 display?
Notebookcheck measured a peak of 3,162 cd/m² on the 44 mm display with the ambient-light sensor enabled, and 591 cd/m² without it. These are review measurements under different sensor conditions, not guaranteed brightness in every setting or situation. The reviewer notes that results vary with screen settings.

Do Galaxy Watch9 health features work with a non-Samsung phone?
Many everyday tracking functions are available through Samsung Health, including heart rate, sleep duration and stages, blood oxygen, skin temperature, respiratory rate during sleep, and workout tracking. However, according to Notebookcheck’s review, ECG and blood-pressure measurement require a Samsung smartphone and Samsung Health Monitor. Sleep-apnea monitoring is also described as a Samsung-phone feature. Without the required Samsung phone and app, those measurements are unavailable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBlood-pressure estimates also need calibration with a cuff-based monitor at least once every four weeks, according to the review. Phone, country, carrier, and software version can affect feature availability, so confirm current support for your specific setup before buying.
What the review’s health-measurement checks show
Notebookcheck compared selected readings with reference devices in its own test setup: a Braun ExacFit 5 Connect for blood pressure, a Braun Pulse Oximeter 1 for blood oxygen, and a Polar H10 for heart rate. The watch’s average deviation was 1.1% for systolic and 0.4% for diastolic blood pressure; oxygen readings averaged 0.7% deviation across three measurements. During a bike ride, exercise heart rate averaged 4.3 beats per minute, or 1.5%, deviation, while resting readings were identical.

These are results from one editorial review’s limited comparisons, not clinical validation or a guarantee of accuracy for an individual. A smartwatch reading should not substitute for medical advice or appropriate medical equipment.
How capable is it for workouts and navigation?
The review describes support for more than 100 tracked workouts, automatic recognition of core activities, dual-band GPS, and a Fitness Index based on heart rate, VO₂max, and daily steps. In the reviewer’s bike ride, route recording was generally accurate compared with a Garmin Venu 2. That is one ride in one review, rather than a broad navigation test across conditions.

Choose based on fit and display preference first, then weigh the battery-capacity difference against what is established about real-world endurance. The detailed Notebookcheck test covers the 44 mm version; it does not provide a directly comparable battery-life result for the 40 mm model.

Design, durability, and everyday use
The Watch9 has a round brushed-aluminum case, touch-sensitive display edge rather than a physical rotating bezel, two side buttons, speaker, and microphone. Its straps are removable and use Samsung’s fastening system; the review does not establish third-party band compatibility. Notebookcheck describes the watch as light and well made.
The review lists 5 ATM, IP68, and MIL-STD-810H ratings and considers showering and swimming suitable, while generally advising against scuba diving and jumping from a 10-meter platform. Ratings have specific limits; do not treat them as a guarantee against damage in every water or impact scenario.
Phone setup, LTE, and voice assistants
Notebookcheck set up the watch with a Galaxy S25 Ultra using the Galaxy Wearable app. The LTE version can make calls without a paired smartphone after eSIM setup. The watch supports Bixby, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa. Availability and behavior can vary by country, carrier, phone, and software version; check current official support details for your region and model before relying on a particular feature.
What should you compare before buying?
The review includes Huawei Watch GT 7, Apple Watch Series 11, Galaxy Watch8, and Xiaomi Watch S5 in its comparison table, but it does not establish one universal winner or provide a complete current market survey. Compare watches against your own priorities:
- Phone ecosystem: Check whether the health functions you want work with your phone.
- Charging routine: Consider the review’s battery results, charging time, and whether you track sleep overnight.
- Responsiveness: The Watch9’s benchmark advantage is clear in Notebookcheck’s testing, but everyday use was not delay-free.
- Fit and screen: Compare case size, display size, brightness, and weight in person if possible.
- Fitness needs: Check workout tracking, GPS, and navigation against the activities you actually do.
- Local availability: Confirm size, Bluetooth or LTE configuration, carrier support, and current local price.
Verdict: a fast upgrade with a familiar battery compromise
The Galaxy Watch9’s strongest case is its new processor, which produced up to 65% higher benchmark results than the Watch8 in Notebookcheck’s review, alongside a very bright measured display and extensive tracking features. Its weaknesses are just as important: the overall upgrade is modest, battery endurance remains limited in the tested configuration, and several health tools depend on a Samsung phone. It makes the most sense for buyers who value speed and features more than long intervals between charges.
