A browser-based whiteboard IDE is not just a drawing canvas: it also needs an interaction model, a React editing surface, and separate decisions about identity, saving, assets, and collaboration. For a freeform canvas, a canvas SDK such as tldraw can provide editing primitives; for a structured workflow or graph editor, React Flow is shaped more closely to the task. Node.js can support the application’s server-side needs, but neither choice makes persistence or multiplayer architecture automatic.
Choose the editor model before choosing a library
Start by deciding what users will create. A freeform whiteboard gives them an open canvas for placing and arranging shapes, text, arrows, drawings, and media. A node-based editor instead organizes work around connected nodes and edges, which suits workflows and interactive diagrams. React Flow, distributed as @xyflow/react, is built for node-based UIs and interactive diagrams. Its customizable nodes and graph-oriented interaction model make it a more natural starting point when users primarily connect defined components rather than arrange arbitrary material on an open canvas. The tldraw repository lists Node.js ^20.0.0 for local repository development. That is repository-development guidance, not a universal Node.js requirement for every app consuming the package; check the current package requirements for your own setup.
Treat the canvas and the application backend as separate layers
A React canvas library supplies an editing surface and its interaction behavior. A complete product still needs application decisions around who can access a document, how changes are saved, where uploaded assets live, and how concurrent edits and presence are transmitted. Node.js may be part of that application backend, but the cited editor capabilities do not by themselves specify your complete persistence, identity, or asset architecture.

tldraw’s multiplayer documentation describes live presence and synchronization, role APIs, and a self-hosted starter kit built with Cloudflare Durable Objects. The vendor states that up to 50 people can edit the same canvas simultaneously. Treat that number as a product specification, not an independently measured capacity guarantee; confirm the current limit and whether the starter-kit architecture fits your expected usage before relying on it. A self-hosted starter kit means operating the documented infrastructure is part of the deployment decision; choosing a React editing library alone does not settle that responsibility. Confirm how authentication, authorization, storage, operations, and scaling fit the application’s requirements before selecting a multiplayer approach.

Verify the license before committing to production
The tldraw repository says its starter kits are MIT-licensed, while the SDK has a separate tldraw license and production use requires a license key. Do not infer the SDK’s production rights from the starter kit’s license. Review the current license terms for your intended commercial or noncommercial use and deployment before building around it. The repository is the cited source for this distinction.

- Write down the main canvas action. If it is free placement and manipulation on an open surface, begin with a whiteboard SDK. If it is creating connected, typed nodes, begin with a node-editor library.
- List the product-specific behavior. Identify the shapes, tools, controls, and rules that distinguish your software design tool, then check whether the candidate exposes suitable extension points.
- Design non-canvas responsibilities. Specify identity, document persistence, media handling, access control, and recovery independently of the React editor.
- Choose collaboration infrastructure deliberately. Establish expected concurrent usage, hosting ownership, and authorization needs; validate vendor limits against those needs.
- Confirm technical and legal requirements. Check current package compatibility, runtime requirements, and license terms before production work.
