Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro Blood Pressure vs. a Cuff: Accuracy and Limits

The Galaxy Watch5 Pro offers cuff-calibrated blood-pressure estimates, not a cuff replacement. Here’s what Samsung’s accuracy figures mean and when to rely on an upper-arm monitor.

Bottom line: The Galaxy Watch5 Pro can estimate blood pressure after calibration with an upper-arm cuff, but it is not a replacement for one. Samsung requires cuff readings to set it up and recalibration every 28 days, and says the feature is not intended to diagnose disease or guide treatment. For home readings that may inform diagnosis or treatment discussions, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a validated automatic upper-arm monitor with a correctly fitting cuff.

What the Galaxy Watch5 Pro measures—and what it needs

Samsung Health Monitor’s blood-pressure feature relies on calibration readings from a separately purchased upper-arm cuff. Samsung’s setup instructions call for three cuff readings within 30 minutes, followed by recalibration every 28 days. The cuff is therefore still part of using the watch’s feature; the watch does not measure blood pressure independently of that calibration process.

Availability depends on market and device compatibility. Samsung announced a phased U.S. rollout beginning March 31, 2026, for Galaxy Watch4 and later models running Wear OS 4 or later with an Android 12 or later phone, subject to qualifications. Check Samsung’s current support information for compatibility in your region and with your exact watch-and-phone pairing. Samsung’s U.S. announcement is at Samsung Newsroom US.

Samsung also specifies careful preparation: avoid smoking, bathing, exercise, alcohol and caffeine for at least 30 minutes; sit quietly for at least five minutes with your back supported, feet flat and legs uncrossed; and support your forearms. Wear the watch snugly on the same wrist used for its readings, remain still and do not talk during cuff calibration. A watch reading is not a casual measurement during activity: it still depends on deliberate preparation and positioning.

How accurate is Galaxy Watch5 Pro blood pressure?

Samsung’s 2024 Safety and Performance instructions report a clinical validation 30 minutes after calibration involving 85 subjects. Two medical professionals took reference cuff measurements. Samsung reports a mean systolic error of −0.11 mmHg, with a standard deviation of 7.46 mmHg, and a mean diastolic error of −0.28 mmHg, with a standard deviation of 5.85 mmHg. The instructions say the study followed a modified ISO 81060-2 protocol.

Those are manufacturer-reported study results, not a promise that an individual watch reading will match a cuff reading. Samsung also reports performance specifications through 28 days of below 5 ± 8 mmHg for auscultatory calibration and below 6 ± 10 mmHg for cuff-monitor calibration. These specifications do not establish that the feature can diagnose high blood pressure or guide treatment. Samsung describes the readings as non-diagnostic and says users should not interpret or act on them clinically without professional consultation and validation by a standard method. See Samsung’s Safety and Performance instructions.

A prospective study indexed for the Galaxy Watch 5 compared it with a validated Omron M4 reference during the recommended calibration interval. Its abstract describes a predominantly young, normotensive population and says no reference measurement was taken during daily routine readings. It is not a Watch5 Pro-specific study, and its population and measurement limits do not establish equivalence to a cuff across people with hypertension or ordinary day-to-day conditions. The study is indexed here.

Why a small average error does not settle the question

A mean error near zero describes the average difference in a study; it does not show how closely every reading matched the reference. The reported standard deviations indicate variation around that average. Nor does a controlled validation after calibration settle how the feature performs across users, daily activity, sleep, medication changes, arm position, skin color or time elapsed since calibration.

  • Rugged Titanium Case: Durable titanium design built for outdoor activities and demanding environments.

In a December 2025 summary of its scientific statement on cuffless devices, the AHA said wearable blood-pressure devices had not yet been proven accurate enough to diagnose high blood pressure or guide treatment decisions. It identified real-world activity, sleep, medication, arm position, skin color and time since calibration as factors needing further study. This is guidance about cuffless devices broadly, not a Watch5 Pro-specific test. Read the AHA summary.

Why a dedicated upper-arm cuff remains the better choice for home monitoring

The AHA recommends an automatic cuff-style upper-arm monitor for home use, provided the model is validated and the cuff fits the user’s arm. It considers wrist and finger devices less reliable and suggests asking a health professional or pharmacist for help choosing a monitor. Home monitoring can help confirm a diagnosis and show whether treatment is working, but it does not replace medical visits. Do not stop medication based on home readings without consulting a healthcare professional. See the AHA’s home blood pressure monitoring guidance.

A cuff is not automatically accurate just because it is a cuff. An unvalidated model, an incorrectly sized cuff or poor technique can distort results. For reliable home readings, the AHA advises avoiding caffeine, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand; resting quietly for at least five minutes; sitting with back supported and feet flat; supporting the arm at heart level; and taking multiple readings.

Watch5 Pro and cuff: which should you rely on?

Question Galaxy Watch5 Pro Dedicated upper-arm cuff
Role Cuff-calibrated convenience estimates; Samsung says they are non-diagnostic. AHA-preferred method for home blood-pressure monitoring when the monitor is validated and the cuff fits.
Setup and upkeep Requires three upper-arm cuff readings within 30 minutes initially and recalibration every 28 days. Requires a validated monitor, a cuff sized for the user and proper measurement technique.
Useful for clinical decisions? Samsung says not to use the feature to diagnose disease or guide treatment. Home readings can help confirm a diagnosis and assess treatment, in consultation with a healthcare professional.
Evidence caveat Samsung reports validation results; broader cuffless-device evidence does not establish diagnostic or treatment-guiding accuracy for this watch. Accuracy still depends on model validation, cuff fit and correct technique.

FDA notices: what they do and do not say about this watch

The FDA’s September 16, 2025 safety communication warns that many over-the-counter products marketed to measure or estimate blood pressure lack FDA marketing authorization and have not been evaluated by the agency for safety and effectiveness. It advises people whose care depends on accurate readings to discuss an appropriate FDA-authorized device with a health professional. This general warning is not a finding about the Galaxy Watch5 Pro’s specific authorization status. The notice is available from the FDA.

The FDA’s January 2026 document on cuffless, non-invasive blood-pressure monitors is draft guidance marked “Not for implementation.” It offers recommendations for clinical performance testing and evaluation; it is not a final binding rule or a device-specific clearance decision. See the FDA guidance document.
