Before sending crypto through a payment app, check the total cost, who controls the funds and how you can recover access, whether the asset and network match the recipient, and whether the app and payment request are genuine. Confirm the provider’s status in your country. Treat a transfer as potentially irreversible: pause if anyone is creating urgency, demanding secrecy, or directing you to an unfamiliar app or address.
What to check before using a crypto payment app
Evaluate the app against five practical questions. A low advertised fee or familiar-looking interface is not enough: the transfer cost, custody arrangement, destination compatibility, account security, and applicable local rules all affect what can happen to your money.

| Check | What to compare or confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Transfer fee, exchange-rate spread, conversion cost, network charge, withdrawal charge, and any promotional period | The displayed fee may not include costs embedded in the exchange rate or later conversion and withdrawal steps. ( CFPB ) |
| Custody and access | Who controls the keys, whether you can withdraw, how account recovery works, and what happens if the account is restricted or the service is unavailable | App-held funds and a wallet controlled by the user have different access and recovery implications. ( CFPB; South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs ) |
| Transfer compatibility | Exact asset, blockchain network, destination address or format, and recipient | A wrong or incompatible destination can be difficult or impossible to recover. ( CFTC ) |
| Fraud and account security | Official app source, independently verified contact details, authentication, and recovery practices | Impersonation, phishing, pressure, and remote-access demands can result in an irreversible loss. ( South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs; CFTC ) |
| Provider and jurisdiction | Legal entity, local permissions or registration relevant to the service, and geographic restrictions | Rules vary by country and activity; one registration is not universal approval. ( FCA; European Commission ) |
How much will the transfer really cost?
Look beyond the app’s headline fee. Compare the amount you pay with the amount the recipient is expected to receive, accounting for the exchange rate, any spread between the quoted and market rate, conversion, network, and withdrawal charges. Check whether the price or fee depends on a temporary offer, a particular payment method, or a minimum amount.
A transfer advertised as free can still cost more through an unfavorable exchange rate or a conversion or withdrawal step. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says promotional price limits should be clear and prominent. Read the CFPB circular on promotional pricing and check the app’s current terms for your region before confirming.

Who controls the crypto, and what happens if access is lost?
Find out whether the provider holds the private keys or whether you control them in your own wallet. If the provider holds the assets, ask how and when you can withdraw, what steps apply if your account is frozen, and what happens during an outage. If you control the wallet, understand the provider’s role and what recovery options exist if you lose your credentials.
Do not assume that a balance displayed in a payment app has the same protections as a bank deposit. The CFPB describes payment apps that hold received funds in a platform or associated stored-value account until a user asks to move them out. Its report on funds stored through payment apps explains why the way funds are held matters. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs also cautions consumers about cryptocurrency scams and transfers in its consumer guidance.

How to verify the recipient and transfer details
- Confirm the asset. Make sure the coin or token selected is exactly what the recipient expects.
- Confirm the network. Check that the sending and receiving sides support the same blockchain network. A matching token name alone does not guarantee compatibility.
- Verify the destination. Check the recipient’s address and any required format or memo. For a new or unfamiliar address, confirm it through a separate, trusted channel rather than relying only on the message that supplied it.
- Review the final screen. Before authorizing, check the recipient, asset, network, amount, and any fee shown. Do not proceed if a detail is missing or inconsistent.
Consumer guidance warns that crypto transfers generally cannot be reversed. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s consumer advisory explains the risk of sending funds to the wrong or fraudulent destination. Treat confirmation as a point of no return unless the provider’s own current terms establish otherwise.

Stop if someone pressures you to act immediately, insists that you keep the transaction secret, tells you to stay on the phone, asks you to install unfamiliar software, or requests remote access to your device. The CFTC warns: “No government agency, legitimate financial institution, or reputable company will instruct you to move money using crypto ATMs, gift cards, or couriers.” The agency’s advisory is titled Pause Before You Pay: Unusual Money Transfer Instructions May Signal Fraud. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs puts the transfer risk plainly: “It’s like sending someone cash and payments typically are not reversible.”

If someone is coaching you through a payment, asking you to move crypto to “protect” an account, demanding secrecy, or telling you to install software, stop. End the conversation and contact the real organization through a website or phone number you found independently. If you are uncertain, discuss the request with someone you trust before acting.
If you have already sent funds and suspect fraud, report it promptly to the platform and the relevant local authorities. In the United States, the CFTC lists CFTC.gov/complaint and the FBI’s IC3 as reporting routes in its consumer advisory. Avoid anyone who promises to recover crypto for an upfront payment; verify any recovery offer independently.
