Samsung’s Galaxy S25 and S26 series carry the clearest current flagship promise: seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, counted from global launch. Older eligible devices have shorter commitments, and Samsung’s “up to seven years” wording for Galaxy mobile security support is a maximum rather than a guarantee for every model.
To find the answer for your own phone, identify its exact model number, country or market, carrier and current software version. Then check the update screen on the phone and the relevant Samsung or carrier release notes. Rollout dates can differ even when two phones have the same promised support duration.

What “Android updates” and “security updates” mean on a Galaxy phone
Samsung delivers Android operating-system upgrades through its One UI software. An OS-upgrade generation is a major software step, such as a new Android version paired with a new One UI release. Security updates are separate maintenance releases that patch vulnerabilities and can arrive monthly, quarterly or on another schedule depending on the device.

A promise of seven years of updates does not mean seven Android-version upgrades. Samsung’s current S25 and S26 launch language specifies seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The security period can therefore outlast, or simply be measured differently from, the number of Android and One UI generations delivered.

Samsung’s current seven-year flagship tier
Galaxy S26 series
Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 launch statement promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. Samsung also cautions that availability and delivery timing can vary. The commitment is for the S26 series as an eligible product family; a carrier or regional variant still needs to be checked individually.
Galaxy S25 series
The Galaxy S25 launch statement gives the same seven-generation OS-upgrade and seven-year security-update commitment, also starting at global launch. Samsung says timing may vary by device, network provider and market. Consequently, two S25 phones sold in different countries can receive an update at different times without having different total support promises.
What the seven-year wording does not establish
- It does not make every Galaxy phone, including older A-series, FE or carrier models, eligible for seven years.
- It does not promise that all seven OS generations will arrive simultaneously worldwide.
- It does not provide a universal end date without the phone’s launch cohort and exact variant.
- It does not guarantee that every security patch will be monthly; Samsung’s security resource says cadence and timing vary by region and model.
Published support tiers for older Galaxy cohorts
Samsung has expanded its promises over time. The following are representative policies Samsung published for named cohorts, not a complete model-by-model ledger.

Why “up to seven years” is not a promise for every Galaxy
Samsung’s 2025 Sustainability Report describes Galaxy mobile security-update support as “up to 7 years.” The phrase sets a maximum across supported products, while the report also says availability and timing vary by product and market. It should not be read as a blanket guarantee for every Galaxy phone ever sold.
Eligibility can depend on the exact model, launch generation, sales region and carrier software. A phone with the same retail name can have a different model number or firmware channel in another market. Samsung’s public material establishes broad cohorts and examples, but not a single current table covering every A-series model, FE variant, carrier SKU and country.
How to check support for your exact Galaxy phone
Use the phone’s software screen first, then confirm the release history for your region and carrier. Samsung’s United States instructions note that menu names and screens differ by model and carrier.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. On some phones the label is Software updates or System updates.
- Choose Download and install or Check for updates.
- Record the displayed model number, current One UI/Android version and security-patch date.
- Check Samsung’s support information and your carrier’s software-update history or release notes for that exact model and market.
The model number matters more than a family name alone. Record the country where the phone is being used, the network provider and whether the device was bought unlocked or through a carrier. Those details identify the firmware channel and can explain why an update shown online has not yet appeared on your phone.

How to read an update delay correctly
A missing over-the-air notification does not by itself prove that a phone has lost eligibility. Samsung separates the length of a support commitment from the timing of each rollout. Carrier testing, regional certification, model differences and chipset-vendor patches can all affect delivery.
- Another region has the patch first: this can be a normal staged rollout rather than evidence that your model is unsupported.
- Your carrier has not posted release notes: carrier approval may still be pending even when Samsung has begun distribution elsewhere.
- The update screen shows no package: verify the model number and software channel before drawing a conclusion.
- The security-patch date is old: it indicates the phone’s current patch level, not a definitive end-of-support notice.
If an update remains unavailable, restart the phone, use a reliable Wi-Fi connection, keep sufficient storage free and check again later. For a persistent discrepancy, compare Samsung’s regional support page with the carrier’s release history and provide both the model number and current build when contacting support.
How to compare two Galaxy phones for longer support
When choosing between models, compare the support inputs below rather than relying on a generic “years of updates” label.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How many OS-upgrade generations are promised for this exact model? | This determines the stated major Android/One UI upgrade scope. |
| How many security years are promised, and what starts the clock? | S25 and S26 commitments start at global launch; other cohorts can use different policy language. |
| Which model number, region and carrier version is it? | Eligibility and rollout timing can vary across variants and markets. |
| What is the update cadence? | Monthly, quarterly or other schedules affect how quickly patches arrive, independently of total years. |
| How much support remains at the purchase date? | A phone bought years after launch has fewer remaining years than a new unit of the same family. |
For a simple estimate, start with the model’s global-launch date when Samsung specifies that as the beginning of the promise. Then subtract the time already elapsed. Do not present the result as an exact end date when the model’s regional start point or eligibility is unclear; confirm it with current Samsung and carrier information.

Buying an older Galaxy: questions to answer before paying
Identify the launch cohort
Find the original model and launch year, then determine which Samsung policy applied to that cohort. A 2022 select-device example cannot automatically inherit the seven-year promise introduced for later flagships.
Check the exact remaining support
Ask the seller for the model number and current security-patch date. Compare those details with Samsung’s regional information. A listing that says “seven years of updates” without naming the model, launch point and region is incomplete.
Consider carrier and market restrictions
An unlocked phone moved to another country may follow a different firmware schedule from the one described in the seller’s original market. Confirm that the intended carrier supports the model and that Samsung provides update information for the country where it will be used.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes to avoid
- Applying S25/S26 support retroactively: the seven-and-seven commitment is tied to those series and their global launch, not every previous Galaxy.
- Equating OS generations with security years: they are separate measures and should be reported separately.
- Dropping qualifiers such as “select,” “up to” and “from global launch”: those words define the scope of Samsung’s policies.
- Treating a delayed OTA as proof of ineligibility: rollout timing varies by model, region and provider.
- Using a stale buying guide as the current policy: an older Samsung UK S-series guide contains outdated or inconsistent three-year Android/four-year security wording. Check it against newer launch statements instead: Samsung’s UK S-series buying guide.
What Samsung’s public information can and cannot tell you
Samsung’s announcements establish clear policy milestones: up to three Android OS generations for selected devices in 2020, up to four One UI/Android generations and five security years for select devices in 2022, and seven OS generations plus seven security years for the S25 and S26 flagship series. They do not establish a definitive, cross-market duration for every Galaxy phone.

Therefore, the reliable answer for an individual device has two parts: first, identify the applicable model-family promise; second, verify the current rollout and remaining support for the exact regional or carrier variant. If either detail is missing, state the uncertainty rather than converting a family-level maximum into a personal guarantee.
Bottom line for Galaxy owners
Galaxy S25 and S26 buyers have Samsung’s strongest stated support: seven OS-upgrade generations and seven years of security updates from global launch. Select older phones received shorter commitments, such as up to four One UI/Android generations and five security years under the 2022 policy. Samsung’s “up to seven years” security language is a ceiling for supported Galaxy mobile products, not a universal rule.
Check Settings → Software update, note the exact model and patch level, and verify Samsung and carrier information for your market. That is the only dependable way to answer how long a particular Galaxy phone will continue receiving Android and security updates.
