Choose LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant (71426) if you want a shorter character sculpture with poseable parts and a smaller vertical footprint. Neither is automatically the better value: prices, stock and discounts vary by region and date, so compare current local listings before buying.
The sets also create fundamentally different displays. Mario & Yoshi recreates pixel-art characters from Super Mario World and adds two hand-operated mechanisms. Piranha Plant is a compact, three-dimensional interpretation of the enemy, with physical posing but no digital play functions. The right choice depends more on shelf space and the kind of movement you want than on piece count alone.

What each set is actually designed to be
Mario & Yoshi is a pixel-art display scene
Mario & Yoshi is not an interactive-course starter set. LEGO presents 71438 as an adult display model: a pixelated Mario riding Yoshi, built to resemble the sprite animation associated with Super Mario World. Its appeal is the combination of a recognizable game image and a mechanism that makes the image move.

The model is physically substantial. At more than 40 cm tall, it has the visual presence of a centerpiece rather than a small character placed beside books or a monitor. The 26 cm width and 11 cm depth are comparatively modest for its height, so the main planning issue is vertical clearance. A shelf can be deep enough while still failing if an upper shelf, cabinet rail or picture frame occupies the space above it.
Piranha Plant is a character sculpture
Piranha Plant takes a different approach. The 540-piece model rises from a brick-built pipe and turns a single enemy character into a display object. Its head, mouth, stalk and leaves can be repositioned, allowing you to change the expression and silhouette without rebuilding the set.
At more than 23 cm high, it is substantially shorter than Mario & Yoshi. It is 11 cm wide and 17 cm deep in the published specification, although a leaf or the head can extend into a neighboring space when posed. That makes it easier to fit under a cabinet or on a shallower display tier, but the depth should be measured rather than assumed from the front view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSize and shelf planning
Use the official measurements as the starting point, then add clearance for the way you intend to display each model. Dimensions describe the assembled model, not necessarily the most comfortable handling area around it.
| Planning factor | Mario & Yoshi 71438 | Piranha Plant 71426 |
|---|---|---|
| Vertical clearance | Allow more than 40 cm, plus a little room to reach the handle and top surfaces | Allow more than 23 cm; posing the head or leaves may change the visual envelope |
| Front-to-back space | 11 cm official depth | 17 cm official depth, with pose-dependent overhangs possible |
| Side-to-side space | 26 cm official width | 11 cm official width before accounting for the chosen pose |
| Best location | A tall, stable shelf with clear access to the mechanism | A desk, bookcase or display tier where the base can remain undisturbed |
For a narrow but tall alcove, Mario & Yoshi’s 11 cm depth can be helpful, provided the 40-plus-centimeter height fits. For a low shelf, Piranha Plant is the safer dimensional choice. Do not judge the latter only by its 11 cm listed width: its poseable leaves and head can occupy more lateral or front space than the pipe suggests.
How the movement works
Mario & Yoshi has two hand-operated actions
71438 uses a handle to make Yoshi run while Mario rides on his back. A separate dial moves Yoshi’s tongue in and out. These are mechanical display features that you operate directly on the model; they do not require batteries, an app or a motor.

Nintendo’s description of the design goal is unusually specific. Carl Merriam, a senior designer on LEGO Super Mario, said:
“In this model, we wanted to capture the original sprite animation from Super Mario World. This meant re-creating the pixel art in LEGO bricks and then adding a mechanism to make Yoshi run with Caped Mario riding on his back. AND if that wasn’t enough fun, we also added a dial to make Yoshi’s tongue pop in and out – just like in the game!”
The quotation appears in Nintendo’s announcement of the set at San Diego Comic-Con. It explains why the model feels more like an animated snapshot than a conventional static sculpture.
Piranha Plant relies on posing rather than a mechanism
Piranha Plant’s movement is manual articulation. You can adjust the head, open or close the mouth, bend the stalk and position the leaves. Those changes let you create an alert, open-mouthed or more relaxed pose, but the set does not perform a repeatable running or tongue action through a handle or dial.
Nintendo explicitly states that Piranha Plant has no digital play functions. Its movement is therefore best understood as physical posing for display photography or a changing shelf arrangement, not as an extension of the LEGO Super Mario app-based course system.
The Action Tag is an optional digital link
Mario & Yoshi includes an Action Tag. When scanned by a compatible interactive LEGO Mario, Luigi or Peach figure, it can produce a digital interaction. Those electronic figures come from separate sets and are not included with 71438, so the tag should not be treated as a complete digital-play system in the box.

This distinction matters if you are buying for someone who already owns an interactive figure. The tag adds a reason to place the display near an existing LEGO Super Mario collection. If you do not own a compatible figure, the central running and tongue mechanisms still work as purely physical features.
Visual style: pixel nostalgia versus three-dimensional character
Why Mario & Yoshi makes a stronger focal display
The visual language of 71438 is deliberately pixelated. Blocky outlines, a side-on composition and Mario’s position on Yoshi evoke a game screen rather than a realistic statue. From across a room, the silhouette reads as a single scene; up close, the brick texture rewards inspection.
That composition also gives the model a narrative quality. Yoshi is not merely standing beside Mario: the handle lets the pair appear to run, while the tongue dial supplies a second recognizable animation. If your display is meant to communicate a specific memory of Super Mario World, this set does more of that work without additional accessories.

Why Piranha Plant works as an independent sculpture
Piranha Plant is easier to read as a standalone object. The pipe provides a visual base, and the open mouth and leaves create a recognizable profile even when the model is displayed away from other Mario characters. Its three-dimensional construction gives you more freedom to turn the character toward a room or camera.
The trade-off is scale. Beside a large 71438 display, Piranha Plant will look like a smaller companion rather than an equal centerpiece. In a mixed collection that difference can be useful: the plant can fill a side shelf or sit in front of taller models without obscuring them.
Stability and handling
Piranha Plant’s balance needs attention
Brick Fanatics’ independent review described Piranha Plant as top-heavy and advised careful posing because the model can tip. That is a reviewer’s practical assessment, not a universal defect designation or a manufacturer warning. The risk is most relevant when you move the head or leaves far from the pipe’s centerline.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
To reduce surprises, pose the plant on a level surface, keep the base fully supported and make small adjustments while holding the pipe or lower stalk. Avoid placing it where a casual brush could swing the head into another model. If you regularly change poses, take a quick photo of a stable arrangement so you can return to it.
Mario & Yoshi needs operating clearance
The available specifications do not identify a comparable balance warning for Mario & Yoshi. Its practical requirement is access: the running handle and tongue dial need to be reachable, and the model’s tall profile should not be pressed against a wall or trapped beneath a shelf. Treat it as a display mechanism you occasionally operate, not as a toy designed for rough play.
Pieces, scale and what the counts do not tell you
Mario & Yoshi contains 1,215 pieces, more than twice Piranha Plant’s 540. The difference reflects both the larger dimensions and the pixel-art construction, which uses many small elements to build a detailed, stepped image and its internal mechanisms.
Piranha Plant’s lower count does not make it a simple flat model. The set concentrates its parts in the pipe, articulated stalk, head and leaves. A smaller number of pieces can still produce a substantial sculpture, especially when joints and poseable sections are involved.
Piece count is therefore a poor standalone value metric. It does not measure the amount of shelf space you have, the kind of motion you prefer, the time you want to spend posing a model or whether you already own a compatible interactive figure.
Price and value: use current regional listings
Prices should be treated as regional and time-sensitive. Brick Fanatics reported Piranha Plant’s launch pricing in November 2023 as $59.99 in the United States, £57.99 in the United Kingdom and €64.99 in the European Union. Those are historical launch figures, not current prices. The Brick Fanatics review provides that launch context, while Brickset’s review also records the set’s published release-era details.

No reliable current price comparison establishes that either set is better value in every market. Retail discounts, taxes, shipping, stock and retirement status can change the result. Check the price in your currency on the day you buy, and compare like-for-like conditions such as new sealed stock versus a marketplace listing.
A sensible value question is not “Which set has the lower price?” but “Which display experience will I actually use?” Paying more for Mario & Yoshi makes sense if its animation and size are the reason you are shopping. Piranha Plant can be the better purchase when the smaller sculpture fits your room and you do not need the Action Tag or running mechanism.
Which set fits your display?
| Your priority | Better match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A large retro-game centerpiece | Mario & Yoshi | Its pixel-art scene is over 40 cm tall and includes two hand-operated animations. |
| A compact character for a desk or low shelf | Piranha Plant | At over 23 cm high, it needs less vertical clearance. |
| Changing expressions and poses | Piranha Plant | Head, mouth, stalk and leaves can be repositioned. |
| Repeated physical animation | Mario & Yoshi | The handle and tongue dial create defined actions rather than free posing. |
| Connecting to an existing interactive LEGO Mario collection | Mario & Yoshi | The included Action Tag can interact with a compatible figure sold separately. |
| A self-contained display with no digital component | Piranha Plant | Nintendo lists no digital play functions, and its appeal is entirely physical. |
| A display that will be moved often | Piranha Plant, with care | Its smaller size is easier to relocate, but the reviewer-noted top-heavy balance calls for careful posing. |
Buying checklist before you order
- Measure the shelf. Record usable height, width and depth rather than the nominal dimensions of the furniture. For Mario & Yoshi, confirm more than 40 cm of clear height; for Piranha Plant, confirm 17 cm of depth and room for the pose you want.
- Decide whether motion or posing matters more. Choose Mario & Yoshi for the handle-driven running action and tongue dial. Choose Piranha Plant if you want to set an expression and leave it there or change it occasionally.
- Check your existing LEGO Super Mario figures. The Action Tag’s digital interaction requires a compatible Mario, Luigi or Peach figure from another set. Do not count on one being included.
- Plan the display surface. Give Piranha Plant a level, supported base and avoid locations where a bump could make its head-heavy pose tip. Give Mario & Yoshi access to its operating controls.
- Verify the live price and seller. Historical launch prices cannot predict today’s regional price. Compare current listings, delivery costs, taxes, condition and return terms.
- Match the visual language to the room. Mario & Yoshi reads as a wide, side-on pixel scene; Piranha Plant reads as a freestanding three-dimensional character. Consider which silhouette will remain visible from the main viewing angle.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Mario & Yoshi is an interactive course set.” It is a display model with manual mechanisms and an Action Tag, not a complete course system.
- “The Action Tag makes the set digitally interactive by itself.” A compatible interactive Mario, Luigi or Peach figure is required and is sold separately.
- “Piranha Plant’s poseability means it has app functions.” The head, mouth, stalk and leaves move physically; Nintendo says the set has no digital play functions.
- “The listed Piranha Plant width covers every pose.” The 11 cm figure is the published measurement; changing the head or leaves can alter the effective space needed.
- “A launch price is a current price.” The $59.99, £57.99 and €64.99 figures reported for November 2023 are historical reference points only.
Verdict
Mario & Yoshi (71438) is the stronger choice for a prominent, nostalgic display: it is much larger, recreates a recognizable Super Mario World pixel scene and adds two clearly defined manual animations. Its Action Tag is a bonus for owners of compatible interactive figures, but the model remains complete as a physical display without them.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It occupies less vertical space and has a clean standalone identity, though Brick Fanatics’ top-heavy observation means you should handle pose changes carefully.
There is no evidence-based universal winner on value. Let your available space, preferred type of movement and current local price decide between them.
