Before you install a Samsung Galaxy update, do three things: switch to Wi-Fi, make sure the battery is well charged, and back up anything you can’t afford to lose. The one setting worth changing is Auto download, set to Wi-Fi only, so future updates don’t use your mobile data. Menu names vary by model, One UI version, carrier and country, so treat the paths below as the common ones, not guaranteed ones.
The pre-update checklist
- Open the update screen. Go to Settings > Software update. Some devices label it System updates. The button may read Download and install, Check for updates or Check for software updates, depending on carrier and device.
- Set automatic downloads to Wi-Fi only. Samsung UK’s instructions say to open the menu on the Software update screen, tap Auto download and choose Using Wi-Fi only. Samsung U.S. describes this as an Auto download over Wi-Fi switch. Look for whichever version your phone shows.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone. Samsung UK Support (page updated July 2, 2026) says: “We recommend downloading updates over a Wi-Fi connection and to make sure your battery is sufficiently charged before starting the process.” It also warns: “Updates can use a lot of data and take some time to install.”
- Back up important data. Samsung’s Japan guidance recommends this before updating. It’s a precaution, not a sign that a normal update erases anything.
- Leave app updates alone for now, or set them separately. See the section below.
How much battery is enough?
Samsung doesn’t give one global figure. Samsung Malaysia’s general update page says at least 20% charge. A Samsung U.S. troubleshooting page cites at least 50%, but in a troubleshooting context. Neither is a universal Galaxy rule. If you have no cause to cut it close, plug in the phone and follow the prompt on your own device.

Why Wi-Fi only matters
The Auto download setting controls whether the update file downloads automatically, and over what connection. Wi-Fi only keeps a large download from eating into your mobile allowance. It doesn’t stop you from checking manually when you choose.

You don’t need a cable or computer for the normal route. If you use Smart Switch, don’t unplug the cable or use the phone while the update runs. The phone may restart, sometimes more than once.

App updates are a separate setting
The system update setting doesn’t control Google Play or Galaxy Store. Each store has its own auto-update option. Samsung Canada recommends choosing the Wi-Fi-only options there to save mobile data.

What to expect once you install
- No going back. Samsung Malaysia (updated September 3, 2026) says: “Once your device has been updated to the latest software version, you cannot downgrade to a previous firmware version due to enhanced security policies.”
- Rollouts differ. Availability and timing can depend on your carrier, country and model. If an expected update doesn’t appear, check with your carrier or local Samsung support instead of forcing it.
- Back up before a failed-update reset. Samsung U.S. warns that recovery from a failed update may need a factory data reset, which erases the phone. That’s the reason a backup is worth having.
