Samsung Galaxy SmartTag3: Why This Tracker Could Be a Game-Changer

Samsung says SmartTag3 is smaller and supports core finding on Galaxy and iOS, but directional guidance requires compatible Galaxy phones and network updates are not guaranteed in real time.

Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag3 could make it easier to find misplaced belongings, but its biggest gains come with important limits: directional guidance requires a compatible Galaxy phone, and its finding network cannot promise real-time updates. Samsung announced the tracker on September 30, 2026; Tom’s Guide reporter Tony Polanco handled it at a Samsung event, but the claims below are Samsung’s specifications, not results from independent testing.

What changed in the Galaxy SmartTag3?

Samsung says SmartTag3 is about 35% smaller by volume and 33% lighter than the previous generation. A smaller, lighter tag should be easier to attach to keys, bags, or other everyday items without adding as much bulk. Samsung also lists a silicone case with a keyring and a separate Loop Case for attachment options.

The more substantial change is the finding system. Samsung says SmartTag3 supports core finding and sharing on Galaxy and iOS devices through SmartThings Find. That cross-platform support does not mean every feature works on both systems: Compass View, Ring Phone, and Left Behind Alert are unavailable on iOS.

How finding a tag works—and what the range claims mean

Nearby: Bluetooth and directional guidance

When you are close enough to connect directly, you can use the phone to search for the tag. On supported Galaxy phones, Compass View combines Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding with ultra-wideband (UWB) for directional guidance, with UWB intended to provide greater precision as you get closer. Samsung says Channel Sounding can extend guidance to as far as 60 meters—around three times the previous generation—under line-of-sight conditions. Walls, electronics, other obstructions, geography, and device compatibility can reduce that range.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life (4-Pack) - Black/White (Global Edition, No US Warranty)
  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only

Compass View requires a compatible Galaxy device running Android 12 or later with UWB or Channel Sounding support. Samsung currently names the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, S26 Ultra, and S26 Plus as Channel Sounding-compatible models. Check Samsung’s current compatibility information before buying: owning a recent Galaxy phone alone does not establish that it supports this directional feature.

Farther away: the Galaxy Find Network

If the tag is outside your phone’s direct connection range, Samsung says the Galaxy Find Network can use participating Galaxy devices to detect it and report a location. Samsung claims that more than 900 million Galaxy devices worldwide can serve as finding nodes. That is the potential scale of the network, not a promise that a tag will be detected quickly or everywhere. Updates depend on nearby participating devices, network conditions, settings, and region; this is not continuous GPS tracking.

Which features work on iPhone?

Samsung describes SmartTag3’s core finding and sharing as available on Galaxy and iOS through SmartThings Find, while explicitly withholding Compass View, Ring Phone, and Left Behind Alert from iOS. The announcements do not establish integration with Google’s Find Hub or Apple’s Find My network, so do not assume the tag behaves like a tracker built for either network. If you use an iPhone, confirm the current SmartThings Find setup and feature list for your region before purchase.

Battery life, water resistance, and other practical details

Battery estimate

Samsung estimates up to 550 days of standard use or up to 790 days in Power Saving Mode. These figures come from Samsung’s simulated internal testing with a pre-release tag and the included CR2032 battery; actual life varies with use and conditions. Power Saving Mode disables some features, so its longer estimate involves a functionality trade-off.

Water and location features

Samsung describes the tag as IP67-rated: resistance to immersion in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Resistance can diminish over time, and Samsung advises against beach or pool use.

New Place Notification lets users designate an area and receive an alert when the tag moves in or out; Samsung labels this feature a trial. Location History can retain records for up to seven days. Movement Detection Alert relies on nearby Galaxy devices participating in offline finding, so an alert may be delayed or may not arrive.

Lost Mode and privacy

With NFC Lost Mode, a person who finds the tag can tap it with an NFC-capable device connected to the internet to view contact details or a message registered in SmartThings. Samsung says location data is encrypted. Lost Mode depends on the owner registering the information and on the finder having the required device and internet connection.

Is SmartTag3 a good fit for keys, luggage, or pets?

  • Keys and everyday items: The smaller, lighter body and close-range guidance on compatible Galaxy phones are the clearest practical advantages.
  • Luggage: The Galaxy Find Network may help locate a bag when it is away from your phone, but detection depends on participating devices and local conditions. Do not treat it as a guaranteed live location feed.
  • iPhone users: Core finding and sharing are described as supported, but several features are missing on iOS and the tag is not established as part of Apple’s Find My network.
  • Pets: SmartTag3 is an item-finding tracker, not a substitute for a purpose-built live pet-monitoring system. Attach it securely to a collar and inspect the fastening regularly. Samsung warns that a detached coin-cell tracker can be a swallowing hazard for children and pets.

What the hands-on report establishes

Tom’s Guide’s Tony Polanco reported handling SmartTag3 at a Samsung event on September 30, 2026, and framed its smaller design and finding features as potentially significant. That event encounter is not a controlled range, battery, or reliability test. Samsung’s announcement provides the available specifications and estimates; no independent comparative field results are established here.
