How to Block Notification Banners in Windows 11

Turn off pop-up banners for individual apps in Windows 11 while keeping alerts in Notification Center, or use Do not disturb and Windows Security controls.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop an app’s pop-up banners without losing its alerts, go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications, select the app under Notifications from apps and other senders, and turn off Show notification banners. Leave Show notifications in notification center on to review them later. Windows Security alerts have separate controls, and some urgent notices still appear.

Choose whether to hide banners or stop notifications entirely

Windows separates notification delivery from banner presentation. Turning off an app’s banners prevents pop-ups while the app’s notices can remain in Notification Center. Turning off that app’s notifications stops delivery more broadly. Microsoft describes the banner control as: “Show notification banners: enable or disable pop-up banners for notifications.” Microsoft Support: Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows.

Turn off banners for a particular app

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.

  2. Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select the app whose banners you want to stop.

  3. Turn off Show notification banners. Keep Show notifications in notification center on if you want to find the app’s alerts later.

To block all notifications from that app instead, turn off its notifications on the same settings page.

Stop or limit notifications across apps

Turn off all Windows notifications

On Settings > System > Notifications, switch off the main Notifications control. This is broader than hiding banners: it suppresses notification delivery rather than leaving notices available in Notification Center.

Use Do not disturb for a quiet period

Turn on Do not disturb from Notification Center to quiet many apps, or set its automatic schedule and activation conditions under Settings > System > Notifications. Notifications that are silenced are sent to Notification Center. Alarms, reminders, and apps allowed by your priority settings may still show banners, so review those settings if interruptions continue. Microsoft explains these controls in its Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows guide.

Adjust Windows Security notifications

Windows Security alerts are managed in the Windows Security app, rather than through an ordinary app’s banner settings:

Microsoft says Windows Security notifications that require immediate action will always be received. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may restrict some notification controls; Windows Security displays a notice when that restriction applies. If a setting is locked, contact your organization’s IT administrator. See Microsoft’s Windows Security App Settings for the category controls and restrictions.

Privacy settings are separate from notification banners

Windows privacy options—such as advertising ID, app launch tracking, and suggested content—do not control whether notification banners appear. Use Settings > System > Notifications for banner presentation, and consult Microsoft’s general privacy settings guide for the separate privacy controls.
