The Galaxy S23 is the better fit if you want a compact phone, a dedicated 3× optical telephoto camera or Samsung DeX. The newer Galaxy A57 makes more sense if you prefer a larger screen, a bigger rated battery and a longer published software-support commitment. Neither is simply “better” for every buyer: the key differences are size, camera hardware, support and the price you can actually find in your market.

Which phone is better for your needs?
Choose the Galaxy S23 for a compact flagship-style experience
At 6.1 inches and 168g, the S23 is substantially shorter and narrower than the 6.7-inch, 179g A57. It is the more natural option if you prioritize a smaller phone that is easier to handle. Its 10MP telephoto camera adds 3× optical zoom, a distinct advantage if you regularly photograph distant subjects. The S23 also supports Samsung DeX, which can provide a desktop-style Samsung interface.
Choose the Galaxy A57 for a larger display and longer support runway
The A57’s 6.7-inch screen gives you more viewing area for video, reading and multitasking. It is thinner than the S23 at 6.9mm, despite its larger overall footprint. Samsung’s published commitment is up to six generations of OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates, compared with the S23’s four OS upgrade generations and five years of security updates. Those commitments begin from each model’s release, so the time remaining depends on launch timing and updates already delivered.
#1 Best Overall
- Galaxy S23 sports a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flat display with adaptive 48–120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a peak brightness high enough for strong outdoor visibility — giving you vibrant, crisp visuals and smooth motion while staying compact.
Display and size: small phone or big screen?
Both have FHD+ OLED-class displays with refresh rates up to 120Hz. The S23 uses a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel; the A57 uses Super AMOLED Plus. On paper, the most practical distinction is size: the A57’s 6.7-inch display is suited to readers who want more screen, while the S23’s 6.1-inch panel keeps the phone notably more compact.
The A57 is 15.2mm taller and 5.9mm wider, but 0.7mm thinner. Its extra 11g is modest compared with the size increase, though handling preference is personal.

Camera comparison: optical zoom versus macro
The S23 has three rear cameras: a 50MP main camera, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide. The A57 pairs a 50MP main camera and 12MP ultra-wide with a 5MP macro camera instead. Choose based on the kind of shots you take: optical telephoto reach is useful for subjects farther away, while a macro module is intended for close-up subjects. Megapixel counts alone do not establish which phone takes better photos, and the available specifications do not provide a controlled head-to-head camera test.

Battery capacity and charging
Samsung lists a typical 3,900mAh battery for the S23 and 5,000mAh for the A57. The larger A57 capacity is an advantage on paper, but capacity by itself does not prove longer real-world battery life; screen size, components, settings and use all affect endurance. Samsung’s UAE S23 page lists up to 22 hours of wireless video playback, while Samsung says the A57 can reach up to 60% charge in around 30 minutes with Super Fast Charging 2.0. These are different manufacturer claims, not comparable battery test results.

Durability and software support
Both carry an IP68 rating
Samsung’s S23 launch materials describe IP68 resistance, and Samsung lists IP68 for the A57. A rating is not a promise that either phone is damage-proof; handling, wear and exposure conditions still matter.
The A57 has the longer original update commitment
Samsung’s 2023 environmental report states four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates for the S23. For the A57, Samsung states up to six generations of OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates. “Up to” describes the published commitment, not a guarantee that the A57 has six years remaining from today: its support period is tied to its launch and delivered updates.

Price difference: launch prices are not today’s prices
Samsung’s U.S. MSRP list effective April 2023 priced the unlocked Galaxy S23 128GB at $799.99. Samsung’s 2026 U.S. announcement set the Galaxy A57 starting price at $549.99, with U.S. availability beginning April 9, 2026. Subtracting those cited launch figures gives a $250 lower starting figure for the A57. That is a comparison across three years, not a current like-for-like retail-price gap.

Quick Recap
How to decide
- Pick the S23 if compact size, a 3× optical telephoto camera or DeX matters more than a larger display and longer original support commitment.
- Pick the A57 if you want the larger 6.7-inch screen, higher stated battery capacity and longer published update commitment.
- Before buying either, compare the actual price for the same storage tier and condition in your country; the cited launch prices do not establish today’s best value.
