The U.S. Department of State’s Eritrea travel advisory, issued September 24, 2026, says: “Use of VPNs and satellite phones is not permitted in Eritrea.” That warning conflicts with Proton VPN’s claim that VPN use is legal there. Because the available evidence does not resolve that conflict or independently verify a VPN working on Eritrean networks, it would be misleading to name a “best VPN” for Eritrea. Visitors should read the official advisory and seek qualified guidance about their circumstances before considering VPN use.
Can you use a VPN in Eritrea?
There is a material conflict in the available sources. The U.S. Department of State advisory issued September 24, 2026 states, “Use of VPNs and satellite phones is not permitted in Eritrea.” Proton VPN’s Eritrea page, by contrast, claims VPN use is legal. Proton is a service provider, and its commercial statement does not override official travel guidance or amount to qualified legal advice.

These sources do not establish how the rule applies to every person or situation. Do not treat a provider’s claim as assurance that using a VPN is permitted or safe. If the answer affects your travel or conduct in Eritrea, consult official guidance and a qualified legal adviser.

Will a VPN work on Eritrean internet?
No independent, current field test in the available evidence establishes that a particular VPN works in Eritrea. A VPN also needs an internet connection to function; it cannot create access where there is no usable underlying connection.

Internet access is limited
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office’s Eritrea travel advice describes internet access as highly restricted, mainly to hotels and a small number of internet cafés. It reports no 3G and unreliable national telephone networks outside Asmara and larger towns. The U.S. advisory says hotel Wi-Fi is limited and inconsistent, cellular data is unavailable, and the sole telecommunications provider is state-owned.
These are travel-advisory descriptions, not speed tests or guarantees about every location. A UK government country-of-concern report says access is constrained more by infrastructure and capacity than by censorship, and that internet providers are required to use government-controlled infrastructure. That context matters: a failed connection does not, by itself, show that a VPN was blocked.

VPN features are not proof of Eritrea performance
Proton describes features intended to help with blocks and censorship, including Stealth, Smart Protocol and alternative routing. Those product descriptions do not demonstrate that the features connect reliably on Eritrean networks. They also cannot overcome the lack of a usable internet connection or settle the legal warning.
What is known about Proton VPN for Eritrea?
Proton VPN is the only named service in the available evidence with a dedicated Eritrea page. It advertises Eritrean IP servers and says VPN use is legal in Eritrea; the same page also says many VPN websites are blocked. These are vendor claims, not independent confirmation of local legality, access to its website, or successful connections from inside the country. Its legal claim conflicts with the U.S. State Department advisory.

Proton’s support pages describe the following tools. They explain intended capabilities, not verified results in Eritrea:
- Stealth: Proton says this protocol is designed to hide a VPN connection and help bypass internet blocks.
- Smart Protocol: Proton says the app can automatically select a suitable connection method.
- Alternative routing: Proton describes this as a way to reach its service when direct connections are blocked.
Proton lists Stealth for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS/iPadOS, Android TV and Linux GUI when Proton Protocols beta is enabled. Platform and feature availability can change, so check Proton’s current documentation and app support for your device before relying on it.

How to assess VPN claims about Eritrea
There is not enough evidence for an honest ranked comparison: no independent current Eritrea field tests, comparative speeds, verified reliability results, or substantiated reviews are available here. When evaluating a provider’s claims, keep these distinctions in view:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Legal guidance: give the State Department warning priority over a provider’s commercial legal claim; the conflict is unresolved here.
- Anti-blocking features: treat descriptions of obfuscation or alternative routing as provider-documented capabilities, not proof of local performance.
- Device support: verify that the relevant feature is currently supported in the app and platform you would use.
- Connectivity: first consider whether an internet connection is available and usable; a VPN depends on it.
- Performance: treat claims of working reliably in Eritrea as unverified unless backed by credible, current local testing.
What should travelers do?
- Read the dated U.S. travel advisory and relevant guidance from your own government before travel.
- Do not rely on a VPN provider’s legal statement as a substitute for official guidance or qualified legal advice.
- Plan for limited connectivity: official travel advice describes restricted internet access, inconsistent hotel Wi-Fi and unavailable cellular data.
- Do not assume that a VPN marketed for censorship circumvention has been tested or will connect in Eritrea.
Sources and limits
The central legal warning and connectivity details above come from the U.S. Department of State advisory dated September 24, 2026, and UK FCDO travel advice. The country-of-concern report provides infrastructure context. Proton’s Eritrea page and protocol documentation are provider statements; Reporters Without Borders describes media and internet controls, including identification requirements for journalists in internet cafés, but does not provide a current technical VPN performance test. None of these sources supplies an independent Eritrea VPN test, comparative speed data or a verified service ranking.
