Samsung treats the two as separate sound categories. Its US support guide puts it plainly: “Message alerts are different from a regular ringtone, and you’ll need to set your message tones separately.” Samsung’s ringtone guide explains that distinction.

How to change the default ringtone or notification sound
- Open Settings. Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Choose the event category. Tap Ringtone to change the incoming-call tone, or Notification sound to change the device’s default notification alert.
- Preview and select a tone. Tap a tone to hear it, then select the one you want.
This is a common Samsung route, not a guarantee that every Galaxy will show identical menus. Available steps and options can vary with the model, software version, and region, and preset ringtone choices may also differ by carrier. See Samsung Canada’s device guidance for its variation caveat.

Changing a tone selects what plays; changing its volume controls how loud that sound category is. Samsung lists separate controls for ringtone, notifications, media, and system sounds. Adjusting notification volume will not select a different notification tone, and changing the ringtone will not change notification loudness. Samsung’s sound and notification guide covers the separate categories.

Use a custom audio file
A song or other downloaded audio file can be used as a ringtone, according to Samsung’s US instructions. Custom notification audio may also be possible, but the file-handling steps depend on the phone’s software and region. Samsung’s UK guide describes placing an audio file in the Ringtones or Notifications folder before selecting it; that guide was updated October 28, 2020, so its folder workflow may not match every current Galaxy. Set a notification sound for one app
Some Galaxy phones and apps let you assign a sound to a particular app notification category instead of relying only on the device-wide default. Samsung’s UK guide gives this route: Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications > [notification category] > Sound. The available categories and labels can differ, and not all apps support custom notification sounds. If you do not see a sound option in Settings, check the app’s own settings. Which one should you change?
- If you want a different sound when someone calls, change Ringtone.
- If you want a different alert for messages or other notices, change Notification sound.
- If only one app needs a different alert, look for a per-app or per-notification-category sound setting.
Samsung’s support material does not define ringtones and notification sounds by melody, length, or loudness; the distinction is the event that triggers the sound. Samsung Japan likewise describes notification customization as app-dependent in its notification-sound guide, updated June 9, 2026.
